Chapter 243 - Chapter 243 243 Awake
Chapter 243: 243 Awake Chapter 243: 243 Awake Chen Xu felt as if he had had a very long dream, and when he awoke, his head was still a bit groggy, much like having a bad cold.
He hadn’t opened his eyes yet when he smelled the distinctive disinfectant odor of a hospital.
Am I in a hospital?
He struggled to open his eyes, his vision engulfed in darkness, barely able to discern the shape of a ceiling. Perhaps he had been sleeping too long; his eyes felt dry. He blinked forcefully a few times, wanting to stretch out his hand to rub them, but when he tried to move, his left hand wouldn’t budge, as if something was pressing down on it.
Looking down, he realized someone was lying next to him, with long hair scattered about. Due to the dim light, he couldn’t see the person’s face clearly.
However, he still recognized her as Luo Xiyun, catching a faint scent from her that drifted to his nose.
“She was the one who brought me to the hospital, and stayed here overnight with me…”
Chen Xu roughly guessed what had happened and felt as if his heart was wrapped in a warm current.
Suddenly, he remembered something and lifted his movable right hand to reach over to the edge of the bed on Luo Xiyun’s side, only to grasp at thin air.
Just as he thought.
The hospital bed seemed even smaller than a single bed. Lying in the middle, he occupied most of the space. Although she lay on her side, a small part of her body was outside the edge of the bed, hugging his arm to prevent herself from falling off.
He carefully turned his body to the side, moving gently and slowly, so as not to wake her. After getting comfortable, his right arm wrapped around her body, reaching down until he finally touched the edge of the bed frame below, holding it tightly. He adjusted slightly and then stayed still in that position.
Chen Xu, smelling her scent, let his mind wander as he wondered what exactly had happened.
He remembered the events following the end of the dream, calculating his score as usual, filled with the anticipation of perhaps receiving a card.
Then, just as he truly woke up, he became unconscious and had been until now.
“Why did I suddenly pass out?”
Recalling the entire incident, his brain throbbed faintly. At that moment, it felt as if his brain had exploded, and the pain had knocked him unconscious.
“Could it be that there was some problem with the dream device?”
At that thought, his face paled. The significance of the dream device to him was self-evident. If it were damaged, it would be a tremendous blow to him.
Yet when he calmed down and thought about it, it seemed unlikely.
“At that time, I was already awake. Logically, the dream device should have stopped working. If it had malfunctioned, it wouldn’t occur after waking up. I probably wouldn’t have woken up at all…”
“Could it be…”
Suddenly, he had a thought, a guess. The difference between this dream and the first three was two key points. First, he told Yang Jinxia that the dream was just a game, which caused the dream device to penalize him.
Yet, he felt that was unlikely. If he had truly violated any rules, there would surely be a notification at the time of settlement.
The other difference was that he had used the learning machine three times in the dream, storing a large amount of knowledge in his mind, which he also brought out with him.
Because his mind was suddenly filled with a massive amount of knowledge, exceeding the brain’s limit, he triggered the protective mechanism and passed out.
The more he thought about it, the more it seemed correct.
“Good thing I only used the learning machine three times. If I’d used it just one more, I might have ended up an idiot,” he thought with some relief.
In total, he had used the learning machine three times, and even though it only added up to a few dozen hours, the content he memorized was equivalent to two large encyclopedias. Just the word count was over ten million, not to mention numerous diagrams and video information.
It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that with such a vast amount of knowledge, it might take him twenty years to memorize it all.
Other than feeling scared after the fact, he was also excited. Knowledge was something you could never have too much of. Having grasped a significant amount of specialized knowledge, it would be much easier for him to breakthrough in that field in the future.
After a while, he felt a wave of fatigue wash over him. Closing his eyes, he soon fell into a half-sleep state.
Because he was worried about Luo Xiyun falling off the bed, he kept his hand in that position and slept lightly.
He didn’t know how long it had been when he felt the person in his arms move slightly and he woke up. Opening his eyes, he saw it was already daylight. Luo Xiyun was just lifting her head, her eyes still somewhat muzzy with sleep.
Their gazes met and Chen Xu smiled, saying, “Good morning.”
Luo Xiyun’s expression passed through a moment of daze, followed by a surge of joy, and then quickly, her eyes reddened.
In the brief interval of a second or two, the tremendous emotional shift was clear in his eyes. Thinking about how worried she must have been during the time he was unconscious, he felt a wave of compassion and said, “Sorry, I made you worry.”
With red eyes, Luo Xiyun withdrew her hands and hugged his neck tightly. She held so firmly that Chen Xu found it hard to breathe and couldn’t support himself; his head fell back onto the pillow and Luo Xiyun’s upper body pressed down upon him.
She didn’t let go, her shoulders quivering slightly.
Chen Xu heard her gentle sobs and felt a pang of distress. Not knowing what to say to comfort her, he could only hug her tightly in return.
After a while, Luo Xiyun suddenly let go and propped herself up to sit on the bed. She wiped the tears from her face and said, “I forgot to notify the doctor.” With that said, she hurriedly jumped off the bed and ran out.
Chen Xu watched her retreating figure, a smile appearing on his face. Sitting up, he stretched his limbs, feeling stiff all over perhaps due to sleeping for too long. He decided to get out of bed to move around a bit.
The curtains around the neighboring bed were drawn closed, which he found bothersome. He pulled them open, only to discover that next to him was a man in his fifties being cared for by a woman of about the same age.
He noticed that the woman gave him a friendly look, so he nodded in greeting.
“Young man, you finally woke up. Yesterday, your girlfriend was so worried,” the auntie said enthusiastically.
Just as Chen Xu was about to respond, Luo Xiyun returned with a doctor. Upon seeing him out of bed, she urged anxiously, “Why are you up? Quickly, lie back down.”
As she spoke, she helped him back into bed.
Chen Xu obediently did as she said and once settled, a forty-something male doctor came over, shone a small flashlight at him, and asked a few questions.
Afterward, the doctor gave Luo Xiyun a few instructions, mentioning that he would need a few more days of observation in the hospital, before leaving.
Chen Xu felt he was ready to be discharged but glanced at Luo Xiyun and knew she wouldn’t agree, so he didn’t bring it up.
Luo Xiyun retrieved a basin from under the bed and brought out some water from the balcony restroom.
“I can do it myself,” Chen Xu, conscious of the other patients’ gazes, said a bit uncomfortably.
“Just sit tight,” Luo Xiyun instructed, handing over a cup and a toothbrush prepared with toothpaste. She took another empty basin to catch the water.
He had no choice but to take them, brushed his teeth, and washed his face. Then he took the initiative to carry the water to the balcony to dispose of it.
It was Luo Xiyun’s turn to wash up while he stood by the bed, stretching and moving around.
“Xiao Xu.”
Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice and turned in surprise to see both his mother and father walking in, followed by Secretary Guo. He asked, “How come you’re here?”
“Thank heavens,” Zeng Wenli, seeing that her son was truly awake, was nearly brought to tears. She took his hand and looked him over, asking, “How are you feeling now? Do you have any discomfort? What did the doctor say…”
“Mom,” Chen Xu, taking both her hands, said, “I’m fine now. The doctor said I could be discharged at any time. It’s just recommended to stay a few more days.”
“Listen to the doctor, son. Nothing is more important than your health. Get all the tests that can be done and don’t worry about the cost…”
As Chen Xu listened to his mother’s rambling concerns, he felt a touch of helplessness but also a great warmth inside. It was only in times of illness that one could truly tell who cared about them.
Chen Xinwen, who had been quiet up until then, pulled his wife back, saying, “Enough, Xiao Xu just woke up. Don’t say too much.”
Chen Xu said somewhat guiltily, “Dad, I’m sorry for worrying you.”
“You don’t need to push yourself too hard. The family’s debts have already been paid off. Your mother and I have lived in the old house for many years and we’re used to it. There’s no need to buy a new one,” Chen Xinwen said.
“I understand.”
At that moment, aside from nodding and agreeing, Chen Xu found there was nothing else he could say.
