Chapter 242 - Chapter 242 Winning is only realized at the end of the journey
Chapter 242: Winning is only realized at the end of the journey Chapter 242: Winning is only realized at the end of the journey Zhou Juanjuan had to work overtime that evening. After finishing the tasks at hand, she found herself bored in the duty room. She told a colleague and then stepped out.
“Going to see that old classmate of yours again?” Her older colleague looked up and teased as she announced her departure, “With such dedication from you, he must be an old flame.”
“Can’t you avoid taking jabs at me for once? Just don’t let his girlfriend hear that, or I’ll be the unlucky one.” Zhou Juanjuan cursed playfully and made her way toward Chen Xu’s ward.
It was deep into the night, and the hospitalization department was exceptionally quiet. Most of the corridor lights had been turned off, and all the wards were dark too. With her hands in her pockets, she strolled leisurely, already accustomed to such environments.
As she walked, she pondered over her old classmate’s condition. She had specifically asked his attending physician, who explained that his condition was somewhat special – no physical trauma, not an apparent disease, but with a particularly active cerebral cortex and yet, inexplicably, he remained unconscious. The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him for now. Observation was their only recourse.
If he didn’t regain consciousness by tomorrow, they would conduct a more thorough examination of his entire body.
“Nurse.”
Suddenly, a woman’s voice from behind startled her. Turning around, she saw a bizarre woman, wearing sunglasses and a hat in the middle of the night–although a mask wasn’t strange.
“Could you please tell me how to get to ward 702?”
The woman’s tone was fairly polite, so Zhou Juanjuan decided not to take much offense and replied, “Follow me. Also, it’s the middle of the night, and the patients need rest, so please don’t shout.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” the woman said, lowering her voice.
Zhou Juanjuan then said no more and walked toward ward 702, which, coincidentally, Chen Xu was in.
They walked to the end of the corridor, where the second-to-last room was 702.
Before Zhou Juanjuan could speak, the strange woman had already stepped inside first, her eagerness betraying her concern for someone dear to her inside.
Three patients’ profiles flashed through Zhou Juanjuan’s mind; she dealt with patients daily and knew them well.
Suddenly, a thought popped into her head, “Could it be that guy?”
She entered the ward, where it was dark except for the dim light at Chen Xu’s bedside. The mysterious woman, still in sunglasses and a hat, was standing right there.
“It really is him.”
Zhou Juanjuan felt a twinge of emotion; Chen Xu sure had a way with women, surrounded by three beauties already, and now here was another.
She wondered about the nature of this newcomer’s relationship with him and what she looked like.
After a moment’s thought, she didn’t go in, choosing instead to wait at the door.
…
On the other side, Secretary Jin was baffled when she saw Bai Jinxuan. Despite the sunglasses and mask, she instinctively felt it was her.
It never crossed her mind that Bai Jinxuan would actually show up. Then, Secretary Jin realized the grave mistake she had made. Her former boss’s lover could be frankly described as a kept woman. But if one were to characterize the relationship between Chen Xu and Bai Jinxuan that way, it could only be the other way around.
Sending the hospital information and ward number earlier, she intended just to confirm that Chen Xu was indeed hospitalized and not making it up. Previously, her boss had been caught lying by his lover, which had turned into a whole debacle.
Thus, when Bai Jinxuan inquired whether Chen Xu was hospitalized, Secretary Jin thought she was checking in on him, so she sent the address.
However, she never anticipated that Bai Jinxuan would rush over in the middle of the night.
Wasn’t she worried about being discovered by reporters?
Wasn’t she afraid of bumping into Chen Xu’s girlfriend?
Truly caught off guard, Secretary Jin rose from her chair, unsure how to address her.
Bai Jinxuan approached the bed, crouched down, took Chen Xu’s hand, removed her sunglasses, and stared fixatedly at his face. She extended a hand and gently caressed it.
Witnessing her actions, Secretary Jin grew anxious inside. Luo Xiyun could return at any moment, and what would happen if she saw this scene?
All Secretary Jin could do was step closer, blocking the view from the door, and quietly reminded her, “His girlfriend might be back soon.”
It was as if Bai Jinxuan didn’t hear her, instead asking, “How long has he been unconscious?”
“Since this morning,” replied Secretary Jin.
“He hasn’t woken up at all, then?”
“No,”
“What did the doctor say?”
“They still haven’t found the cause, more tests are needed. Um, I need to step out for a moment,” Secretary Jin said, backing away. As she reached the door, she noticed Zhou Juanjuan standing there, which startled her momentarily.
“I came to do the night rounds.” Zhou Juanjuan offered a brief explanation, glanced into the room, and then left.
Secretary Jin was initially a bit worried but then remembered that Bai Jinxuan was always wearing sunglasses and a mask. She probably wouldn’t recognize her, which eased Secretary Jin’s mind.
Then, she couldn’t help but sigh. She had thought she worked for a perfect boss. Apart from being slightly less capable, he had no other flaws–and fortunately, he was willing to listen to others’ advice and learned quickly. Most importantly, he had an excellent opportunity and already possessed a foundation for success.
But she hadn’t expected his love life to be so complex. Luo Xiyun wasn’t enough; he had somehow become involved with a big star like Bai Jinxuan. And even more worryingly, he had entangled himself with Yang Jinxia.
Now with Chen Xu unconscious, nearly causing a convergence of three women, it fell on her to clean up this mess.
No, she would have to demand a raise.
She thought resentfully to herself.
…
Inside the hospital room, Bai Jinxuan held Chen Xu’s hand and whispered, “Can you hear me talking? It’s me, I’ve come to see you. I was so worried when I heard about your accident. You must not let anything happen to you. It took me so long to find you…”
“We’re both so busy we don’t have time to meet; we can only talk through video calls. Even though you already have a girlfriend, I can accept it, because I know I can’t be with you openly.”
“But I’ve been working hard. I believe that one day, I’ll be able to free myself from all constraints, and then, no one will be able to stop us.”
“I’m not afraid to compete with anyone. I’m not afraid of anything…”
“You have to wake up soon.”
She held his hand to her nose, closed her eyes, and continued to speak in a very soft voice.
After a while, she opened her eyes again and said, “I have to go now, Fangfang is waiting for me. If I don’t go down soon, she’ll start to worry. I’ll stay here these few days; I will definitely come back to visit you.”
After speaking, she placed his hand back, put on her sunglasses, stood up, and took a deep look at Chen Xu before turning and walking out.
Once out of the hospital room, she encountered Secretary Jin. She had recognized her earlier as the woman living next door, mentioned by Chen Xu as his employee. Later, she had glimpsed her several times through the peephole and remembered her face.
She sincerely said, “Thank you for taking care of him.”
“It’s my duty,” Secretary Jin replied politely.
“Then, I’ll be on my way,” said Bai Jinxuan, looking back into the room before heading back the way she came.
Close to the staircase, she heard footsteps around the corner and saw a woman approaching. With just one glance, she instinctively felt this was Chen Xu’s girlfriend.
She had a flawlessly beautiful face, a towering figure, and a dazzling demeanor. She wore a new-season dress from a luxury brand that looked even more stunning on her than on the models.
Even with full confidence in herself, Bai Jinxuan couldn’t help but feel a bit shaken at first sight. No wonder Chen Xu was so preoccupied with her; she was truly beautiful.
These thoughts flickered through her mind as she passed by the woman.
It wasn’t long before she recovered, reminding herself that matters of the heart were complicated, and beauty alone wasn’t enough. Perhaps they had broken up over a trivial matter?
Only making it to the end counted as a victory.
…
When Luo Xiyun called to inform Chen Xu’s parents, she had already booked a room at a nearby hotel. After escorting them there, she quickly returned to the hospital.
Right after exiting the elevator, she brushed past a peculiar woman at the corner. She instinctively looked back, seeing the other person enter the elevator, and felt a strange sensation.
However, this feeling was fleeting, and she didn’t dwell on it, rushing to the hospital room to relieve Secretary Jin. She took on the night shift herself.
Once Secretary Jin left, only Luo Xiyun remained. After a whole day of busyness, she felt tired. While sitting, she dozed off at the side of the bed,
In the middle of the night, she woke up, her arm numb from the pressure and discomfort. She decided to slip off her shoes and lie down on the bed.
The bed was small, but fortunately, Chen Xu wasn’t heavy. She lay on her side, fitting just right. To prevent falling off, she held his arm tightly, pressed close to him, and whispered, “Goodnight,” before closing her eyes and quickly falling asleep.
