Chapter 239 - Chapter 239 239 Eye-opening
Chapter 239: 239 Eye-opening Chapter 239: 239 Eye-opening Throughout high school, Zhou Juanjuan always sat behind Chen Xu, and this wasn’t entirely coincidental. During those years, she was similar to Chen Xu–fairly plain, quite shy, with few friends, and somewhat inconspicuous in class.
Perhaps because of this, Chen Xu became the boy she interacted with the most, and over time, this interaction bred a fondness that couldn’t quite be described as hazy. However, she never told anyone about it.
By the second semester of their junior year, when classes were reassigned, they ended up in the same class and naturally, they joined a few other old classmates and thus, she found herself sitting behind Chen Xu once again.
Later, after they started university, they were in the same city but never contacted each other again.
Time had passed, and she could never have imagined that the next time she would see Chen Xu, it would be under such circumstances. He had changed so much, she hardly dared to recognize him.
But when she thought of herself, she realized she was practically a different person from her high school self as well. After all these years, having been to university and entered society, change was the norm.
What surprised her even more was Chen Xu’s charm. The woman who claimed to be his employee was unbelievably beautiful. She bustled around him in a way that didn’t seem like a mere employee.
When his official girlfriend appeared, Juanjuan was stunned. The boy who used to be unremarkable and would blush when speaking to girls had somehow found such a beautiful girlfriend.
Over the past few years working in the hospital, Juanjuan had seen many different people–patients and their families, and plenty of beautiful women. But none were as striking as Chen Xu’s girlfriend. When she first saw her, Juanjuan mistook her for a celebrity, so outstanding was her presence.
She found it hard to believe that such an extraordinary woman could be Chen Xu’s girlfriend. It was only after encountering Secretary Jin that she received confirmation.
Juanjuan was very curious, and although she hadn’t deliberately inquired, she knew vaguely about Chen Xu’s situation from old classmates. He seemed to work for some company and hadn’t heard about him striking it rich. How did he manage to find such a beautiful girlfriend?
Moreover, his girlfriend was incredibly considerate, going as far as washing his feet for him. That image had quite an impact.
Now, following the doctor’s instructions, Juanjuan was taking Chen Xu’s blood pressure. She had just wrapped the cuff around his arm and hadn’t yet started to inflate it when another beautiful woman walked in, her looks and demeanor in no way inferior to Chen Xu’s girlfriend.
“What are you doing here?”
When she heard Chen Xu’s girlfriend utter these words with a tone full of hostility, Juanjuan was so shocked she forgot what she was doing. She stared blankly at the newcomer, then at Chen Xu’s girlfriend. A woman’s intuition told her that the atmosphere between these two was fraught with tension.
Her mind was reeling. What was their relationship?
Yang Jinxia looked at Chen Xu on the hospital bed with a face that seemed to be veiled with frost, her eyes flashing with danger, “Is this how you take care of him?”
Even Zhou Juanjuan felt chilled by her tone.
When she grasped the meaning behind the woman’s words, she was even more baffled. No way?
On hearing Yang Jinxia’s accusation, Luo Xiyun felt stifled, torn between defending herself and not wanting to shirk responsibility. Her face reddened and she was at a loss for words for a moment.
It was Secretary Jin who first reacted, hurriedly stepping in to mediate, “Mr. Yang, Mr. Chen had a sudden illness, with no warning signs beforehand.”
Yang Jinxia’s gaze softened significantly as she looked at Secretary Jin and said, “You did well.”
“Mr. Yang is too kind,” Secretary Jin responded, both flattered and confused by the praise. She couldn’t have praised her for no reason. Was it because she had taken Chen Xu to the hospital?
But how had she known about it?
There were only a few who knew of Chen Xu’s hospitalization, and none would spread the word carelessly. How had she found out, to come directly, even knowing the details of him being brought to the hospital…
The realization was terrifying. For a moment, Secretary Jin felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
“I want to transfer him to a better hospital,” Yang Jinxia declared, turning to Luo Xiyun. Her voice was not loud, but it left no room for negotiation.
Luo Xiyun’s mood had somewhat calmed, and she said coldly, “He is my boyfriend, and I don’t need you to worry about his hospitalization. Please leave.”
A trace of contempt flickered in Yang Jinxia’s eyes as she responded, “To you, your status is more important than his life and death, isn’t it?”
Luo Xiyun’s face turned pale in an instant.
Zhou Juanjuan, standing to the side, had figured it out; it really was a melodrama of two women fighting over one man. She no longer pondered why two outstanding women would take an interest in someone like Chen Xu. Her attention was completely captured by the verbal tussle between the two women.
Yang Jinxia’s words left Zhou Juanjuan in awe–such devastating and heart-piercing statements. If it were her, she probably couldn’t have resisted starting a fight on the spot.
Luo Xiyun’s chest heaved dramatically as she suppressed her anger and said, “I will, of course, take him abroad to see better doctors…”
“In cases like his, if you delay even a day, you might miss the optimal treatment window. Surely, you understand that,” Yang Jinxia said with a scoff, “In the end, it seems you are more concerned about your own feelings, utterly disregarding whether he lives or dies.”
Brilliant!
Zhou Juanjuan saw the newcomer, a woman with an elegant demeanor and a strong aura, corner her opponent in just a few sentences. She felt some sympathy for Chen Xu’s official girlfriend, who was being mercilessly targeted with such direct and painful accusations. Agreeing would be painful, and not agreeing would be even worse.
At such a moment, most women probably wouldn’t have been able to stop themselves from lashing out, wishing they could tear the other’s mouth apart.
Secretary Jin, standing beside them, was trembling, not daring to step forward to mediate this time.
“I…” Luo Xiyun, holding onto the edge of the bed, was as pale as a sheet of paper.
“You don’t need to worry about transferring him,” a deep voice sounded from the entrance of the ward.
Another one? And a man this time–who could it be?
Zhou Juanjuan heard the voice and looked towards the door to see a middle-aged man with a square face radiating authority–a presence that clearly was not that of an ordinary person.
Secretary Jin recognized the arrival and stuttered, “Mr., Mr. Luo…”
It was none other than Luo Zhenghai. He ignored Secretary Jin and walked up to Yang Jinxia, blocking her view of Luo Xiyun, and said, “I’ll make the arrangements for him. You can leave now.”
Yang Jinxia was in no mood for pleasantries and retorted bluntly, “I don’t trust you.”
A flicker of anger passed through Luo Zhenghai’s eyes, and his voice grew colder, “Yang Jinxia, don’t go too far.”
Yang Jinxia met his gaze and stated, “Today, I’m taking him with me. No one can stop me.”
The atmosphere on the scene seemed to freeze over.
Zhou Juanjuan was looking at her, starry-eyed. This attitude in the face of a love rival was simply stunning–a paragon for women.
“Xiao Xu–” At that moment, another pair arrived at the door, a middle-aged couple. As they entered and saw so many people in the room, they both paused in surprise.
The woman quickly noticed Chen Xu on the bed, and overwhelmed with sorrow, she pushed through the crowd, took his hand, and wept, “Xiao Xu, what’s happened to you? Don’t scare Mommy.”
Now, everyone knew that these were Chen Xu’s parents.
Zhou Juanjuan noticed that the previously tense atmosphere had dissipated in an instant and thought to herself, today’s drama had been incredibly gripping. A pity that the main character, Chen Xu, was not conscious to witness it, for that would have made it even more fascinating.
