Chapter 235 - Chapter 235 235 I dont want you to die
Chapter 235: 235 I don’t want you to die Chapter 235: 235 I don’t want you to die Chen Xu and Yang Jinxia were connected by a steel cable less than a meter long. Their bodies tugged at each other, pulling the cable taut and straight as they spun, flying towards an unknown direction.
In their field of vision, the background kept spinning; in one direction, a swath of starlight could be observed. Using it as a reference, they knew they were spinning rapidly, for the starlight would appear briefly and frequently.
Besides that patch of starlight, other directions also revealed some stars, perhaps too remote and dim. Closer objects were completely invisible, and the Dawn spacecraft’s whereabouts were unknown.
Inside their helmets, lights were on–not very bright, but enough to allow them to see each other’s faces clearly.
So they watched each other, their gloved hands gripping one another’s, without speaking.
It seemed as if they would drift like this forever.
Time passed, indeterminate.
“This is really nice,” Yang Jinxia sighed contentedly and said, “It’s only us here, with nothing to worry about, nothing to think about. If only we could stay like this forever.”
“We will, we will keep drifting like this,” Chen Xu replied lightly, “Perhaps until the end of the universe, or maybe one day, some intelligent life will discover us and imagine a romantic and tragic love story.”
A longing appeared in Yang Jinxia’s eyes as she said, “Then we need to leave our names, so others will know it’s our story.”
Chen Xu continued, “Maybe they will clone us, and then we can be together again.”
Yang Jinxia didn’t respond to his words, her face gradually showing a hint of sadness as she asked, “How much oxygen do you have left?”
Chen Xu’s expression became somewhat unnatural, and after a moment, he said sorrowfully, “I’m sorry, I can’t bear to watch you die in front of me, and yet I must ask you to endure this. Last… last time it was like this, and this… time it’s… the same…” His voice trailed off, pain etching his face, his breathing becoming labored.
Suddenly, he gripped her hand tightly and said urgently, “You… don’t need… to worry… it’s… only… a… game…” But before he could finish, he couldn’t breathe at all, his mouth opening wide, his face turning red, and veins bulging from his skin.
Seeing his agony, Yang Jinxia’s breath started to quicken, struggle appearing in her eyes. When she saw his eyes roll back, about to lose consciousness, all her hesitation shattered, and she called out urgently, “2003, bring the spacecraft over here, now, quick–”
Seconds later, a spaceship stopped nearby, its hatch opened, and two robotic arms reached out, grabbing them and pulling them aboard.
……
Chen Xu gradually regained consciousness, feeling a touch of regret. This was his first time failing in a dream game, and he didn’t know what penalties there might be.
He tried to open his eyes but found the light somewhat blinding and couldn’t help squinting, puzzled. The end of the game wasn’t usually this bright. Could it be because he died in the game?
“You’re awake…”
Yang Jinxia’s voice clearly rang in his ears, and he was startled, “Why is she here too?”
This had never happened before. Shocked, he disregarded the strong light in front of him and opened his eyes, indeed seeing Yang Jinxia, her face full of concern.
“How are you…” He blurted out, but halfway through speaking, he realized something was amiss. His face was covered by something like a breathing apparatus, preventing him from speaking at all.
Furthermore, his body was soaked in some liquid.
This was definitely not the space where dream state settlements occurred.
“I’m not dead?”
Finally coming to his senses, he looked up at Yang Jinxia above him with a mix of shock and bewilderment.
What on earth was happening?
He wanted to get up but found his body was out of control and completely immobilized.
“His consciousness has been restored, and the treatment is ending,” a strange electronic voice announced.
Chen Xu saw the lid above open, and he was able to move again; propping himself up against the wall, he sat up, tore off the breathing mask on his face, and asked her, “What’s going on? Wasn’t I already dead?”
Yang Jinxia came over with a towel and said, “You should take a shower first.”
Only then did Chen Xu realize he was stark naked, which made him somewhat uneasy. He quickly took the towel and wrapped it around his waist. He stood up from the bathtub-like machine beneath him and stepped onto the floor, unable to contain his curiosity, he asked, “Where is this?”
“Spaceship,” Yang Jinxia answered briefly, pointing in a direction, “The bathroom is over there.”
Chen Xu felt sticky all over, even his eyelashes were clumped together, causing him discomfort. Although full of questions, he still headed into the bathroom, intending to wash off the gooey substance before addressing them.
There was a shower in the bathroom. As he stood beneath it, warm water sprayed down, relaxing his tense nerves and muscles. He closed his eyes, rinsing off the viscous fluid and, as though also washing away exhaustion.
A few minutes later, he emerged in a white bathrobe, barefoot, with his hair still dripping wet. The tub-like equipment that had been outside was gone.
He then realized that this place was actually a room. Yang Jinxia was sitting in front of a vanity, facing the mirror, busy combing her hair with a brush.
He sat down by the bed, looked at her profile, and said emotionlessly, “This isn’t a coincidence, is it?”
Yang Jinxia stopped combing her hair, set the brush on the desk, and said, “Yeah, it’s no coincidence. Just as your oxygen was about to run out, you happened to encounter the spaceship.”
Hearing her words, Chen Xu’s breathing grew heavy, “So, this spaceship has been under your control all along.”
Without turning around, Yang Jinxia continued looking at herself in the mirror and said calmly, “Right, after I left the spaceship, robots piloted it. Through Unit 2003, I can control my robots and summon the spaceship at any time.”
Upon her straightforward admission, Chen Xu fell silent for a while before finally speaking, “Why do this? Watching me struggle for survival, did you find it amusing?”
“You have always resisted me in your heart,” Yang Jinxia said, lowering her head slightly, a strand of long hair falling over her shoulder. “Actually, I know, men don’t like women to be too assertive, and especially you. You chose Xiyun because she seemed more feminine, didn’t you?”
“So, this time, I didn’t want to make the same mistake. I just wanted to be the little woman by your side, waiting at home for your return, to cook for you, sit together after dinner, read books, chat, or go for walks outside. Occasionally we’d bicker, sometimes argue, then make up. Just like any other couple…”
Her voice grew softer, “When danger arose, I wanted you to protect me, to see you nervous for me, worried, staying up all night and going to all lengths to save me. It pained me, but, truly, it made me so happy…”
Chen Xu looked thoughtful. After taking a deep breath, he said, “You guessed it, didn’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t risk your life. You’d rather die than call the spaceship.”
“I wasn’t entirely sure; it all felt too real. Plus, a voice in my head kept telling me it was true.”
She brushed her hair back behind her shoulder, revealing the left side of her cheek. Under the bright light, it seemed to glow as she said, “When the spacesuit was leaking, if I had called the spaceship, it would have given the game away. You would have thought it was a trick. That would have been counterproductive. Better to take a gamble.”
Chen Xu said coldly, “And if your guess had been wrong?”
Yang Jinxia turned her head to look at him with a smug smile and said, “Then, you would never forget me. Either way, I would win.”
Chen Xu opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something but couldn’t.
After a moment, the smile on her face faded. She spoke with some annoyance, “Everything was going smoothly, but I didn’t expect you to do that.”
Chen Xu, expressionless, replied, “But that’s exactly what you wanted, isn’t it? Isn’t that why you did all this?”
She said somberly, “But you might have died. I didn’t want you to die.”
Chen Xu was suddenly taken aback.
