Chapter 234 - Chapter 234 234 I call the shots

Chapter 234: 234 I call the shots Chapter 234: 234 I call the shots “Don’t move,” Chen Xu said, his heart pounding wildly.

At that moment, the suction outside of the hatch had diminished, indicating that the pressure between the inside and outside of the spaceship was nearly equalized. He tapped another button on his waist and the steel cable began to slowly retract, pulling his body upwards.

Soon enough, the steel cable was fully retracted, and the sucking force outside the door had vanished. He unfastened the cable’s buckle and pushed off with his feet, floating toward Yang Jinxia.

He drifted beside Yang Jinxia, braced his hand against the wall to dissipate his momentum, and came to a stable stop. Her face was somewhat pale, her eyes fixed on him, showing a strange calmness.

From her gaze, he felt an ominous premonition tighten his throat as he said, “Don’t worry, you’ll be okay.”

He quickly noticed a small puncture on her shoulder, where air was steadily leaking out.

In the vacuum of space there was no sound, but he felt as though he could hear a hissing noise, like a death knell, causing his heart to ache with each pulse.

“Don’t move,” he panted, reaching with a reversed hand into the tool bag on his back for a roll of silver duct tape. He tore off a piece, but his thick gloves severely hindered his dexterity. This simple action took several precious seconds.

Yang Jinxia watched him, through the round transparent helmet, she could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead. His breath fogged the helmet with a layer of white mist that quickly disappeared, then reappeared and vanished again.

“Don’t panic,” she whispered in consolation.

Chen Xu, at last managing to tear off a strip of tape, applied it to the leaking spot on her shoulder. His face was now covered in sweat as he swallowed hard and asked, “Is it still leaking?”

Yang Jinxia shook her head and said, “It stopped.”

“How much oxygen is left?” Chen Xu asked again.

“All our stuff flew out,” Yang Jinxia didn’t answer his question but instead brought up something else.

Everything had happened so suddenly that all of their items, including the toolbox and the curtains wrapped around their collected food and water, as well as the spare power supply and oxygen for their space suits, had been swept out into space.

Without food and water, they could last a few days, and they could always go back to the spaceship to look for them. But without oxygen, they were in a life-threatening situation. Normally, a bottle of oxygen would last for two hours.

Along the way, they had replaced their oxygen several times. Unfortunately, both of them had changed their oxygen bottles an hour ago, which meant that Chen Xu had less than an hour’s worth left.

As for how much Yang Jinxia had lost, it was incalculable. But clearly, neither of them had enough time to return to their original position. Having lost the toolbox, they were also unable to open the hatch doors en route.

“How much exactly?” Chen Xu’s breathing became even more labored, his voice hoarse.

He was not in good shape. After eight hours of study, the side effects lingered, and waking up to such a serious situation left no time for rest. He had been rushing the whole way, and both his physical strength and mental energy were nearly spent.

Yang Jinxia looked down and said in a low voice, “Five point eight percent.”

That meant they had less than five minutes left.

Chen Xu’s mind raced, strangely clear at this moment, calculating rapidly.

Five minutes!

The number sent a sharp pain through his heart. He said, “Stay here and don’t move. I’ll go outside and find an oxygen bottle.” Then, with a strong push with his arm, he floated toward the exit of the transport chamber.

Yang Jinxia turned back and said to 2003, “Take me over there.”

2003’s eyes had a light shining within. At her command, it pulled her toward the exit. It had a somewhat clumsy shape and moved slowly, appearing not very agile, but its powerful computing capabilities allowed it to stop precisely at the exit.

Stepping out, they could see the starry sky outside, and the entire main cabin, including the storage area, was gone. This included the spaceship she had piloted.

Around the edges, the metal was curled outward, showing irregular tear marks as if it had been violently ripped open.

On this side, the walls of the transport channel were somewhat concave.

Seeing the scene here, one could guess that a violent explosion had occurred, disintegrating the entire main cabin. Everything had vanished into the vastness of space.

Yang Jinxia watched the screen, where the oxygen level had already dropped below five percent and was continuously issuing warnings. She turned her head to look for Chen Xu’s figure and saw him searching for a spacesuit at the location of the original corridor.

When the oxygen level fell below three percent, she felt that breathing seemed a bit difficult.

“2003, let me go.”

At that moment, Chen Xu, who had run a hundred meters away, flew towards her with great speed, excitedly saying, “Look, I found it.”

She looked carefully and saw that he was holding only one oxygen bottle in his hand, saying, “Just one bottle?”

Chen Xu had already flown to her side, and due to the excessive momentum, he slid some distance before managing to slow down and floated over with the help of the wall, saying, “I’ll fill you up first.”

“What about you?” Yang Jinxia was also a bit out of breath.

“I’ll go look for more later,” Chen Xu said, as he was about to install the oxygen bottle into the replacement slot on the back of her suit.

“No.”

Yang Jinxia turned around, drifting backward a distance, her eyes locking on him, “The damage here is so severe, this might be the last bottle. If I take it, both of us will die.”

“What are you thinking?”

Chen Xu’s expression changed, and with a push of both hands, he flew towards her.

“I want you to live,” she said, and with a forceful push, she flew out into outer space.

With that push, she used all her strength, and her speed was very fast. She faced him the whole time, her eyes filled with longing and reluctance, as she murmured, “Promise me, you must survive.”

“No–”

Chen Xu watched her fly away with wide-open eyes, his mind buzzing.

“What I want is for you to love me. I want to be unforgettable to you for your entire life, to leave an indelible mark in your heart.”

The confession from their last encounter echoed in his ears.

Everything in front of him seemed to have vanished, leaving only the sight of her receding figure.

Suddenly, he let out a loud shout, “Yang Jinxia, don’t even think about it.” Then, he forcefully kicked off the wall, hurtling into outer space at an even greater speed.

“You–”

As Yang Jinxia continued to drift backward, she saw this scene and her eyes widened in shock, her gaze frozen.

Chen Xu was much faster, and within a minute, the distance between them grew rapidly shorter until they passed each other just ten meters apart.

This time, his kick for momentum wasn’t as precise. In the vast universe, a slight difference could lead to miles of deviation. Once they missed each other, their distance would only grow larger.

Just then, Chen Xu hit the button on his waist, and the tether shot out again, latching accurately onto the tether hook on her waist. Immediately after, the tether snapped taut, their figures jerked, and they changed direction, floating towards each other.

As they came within the shortest distance, Chen Xu reached out to grab her and missed by a little, passing by her again until the tether snapped straight once more, jerking them, and then they changed direction again.

It was then that Chen Xu remembered to press the button, retracting the tether. As the tether grew shorter and shorter, the two of them, spinning and tumbling, Chen Xu finally caught her.

He could see that her mouth was open and she was having difficulty breathing. First thing, he inserted the oxygen bottle in his hand into the replacement port on her back, and after a while, the used old bottle automatically fell out from inside.

Yang Jinxia took a deep breath, panting while she spoke hastily, “Why are you so foolish?”

“You self-righteous woman.”

At this moment, Chen Xu could no longer suppress the anger in his heart, his eyes seemed to be spitting fire, “You think by creating a fait accompli, you can force me to accept the path you’ve arranged? Once like this, twice like this, three times still like this. I’m telling you, no way.”

“From today on, I call the shots. If we’re to live, we live together, if we’re to die, we die together.”

Yang Jinxia looked at him, tears welling up and floating inside her helmet, wetting her face and her hair.
