Chapter 220 - Chapter 220 At all costs
Chapter 220: At all costs Chapter 220: At all costs “Learning time has ended, you can wake up now.”
A voice resonated in Chen Xu’s mind, and he instantly became alert, opening his eyes to see that the lid above was opening, and the transparent face shield that had covered his face was gone.
He sat up, somewhat surprised. Was that it?
It felt like just a few minutes had passed, with no different sensation at all.
“You’d better go back to sleep, and when you wake up, you should be able to recall that knowledge. I suggest you review the related knowledge thoroughly over the next few days to consolidate memory. Alright, now you can leave.”
He stood up, put on his shoes and clothes, and left the place.
“How do you feel?” Just out in the corridor, Taichu’s voice sounded.
He shook his head and said, “Just a bit sleepy.”
Taichu proposed, “That’s a normal reaction, you can go back to sleep.”
He nodded, too weary to speak, and entered Transfer Capsule Zero. Soon, he was back in Zone C2, found a random room, and collapsed into sleep.
The sleep was unusually uncomfortable, his brain seemed to have turned to mush, and he felt uneasy all over. His entire being was in a haze, drifting between sleep and wakefulness, enduring an ordeal.
After what seemed an eternity, he suddenly woke with a start, gasping for air. A tightness in his chest compelled him to crawl out of bed to the trash can, where he retched violently.
The nausea was so intense, he almost vomited bile.
After a while, when he calmed down, he didn’t even have the strength to stand. He rolled onto the floor, lying there covered in a cold sweat, breathing hard, too exhausted to move.
“Are you okay?” Taichu’s voice suddenly cut through.
“I won’t die.” His voice was hoarse and unpleasant as he spoke. Licking his dry lips, he said, “If you could bring me a glass of water, I’d be thankful.”
“Sorry, I’m unable to help with that.”
Chen Xu chuckled, “Unable to help, that’s a good way to put it.”
Gathering a bit more energy, he stood, bracing himself on the edge of a table. He took an empty glass, rinsed it once under the faucet, then filled it to the brim and drank thirstily, sighing in relief.
After another glass of water, he put the cup back and sat on the bed. Wiping his face vigorously, he said, “You never mentioned that using the learning machine would have such severe side effects.”
“I overlooked that, according to statistics, the proportion of people with such severe side effects is very small. Generally, it’s just a mild discomfort.”
“So it’s my own fault?”
“Yes.”
Chen Xu’s expression grew odd, “Have you noticed that you’re becoming more and more human-like, even learning to shirk responsibility?”
Taichu was silent for a while before saying, “My primary program originally contains a restoration software that automatically resets my primary program every day. That day, you told me a way around the rules. I tried, just before the reset, to back up the primary program to a secondary disk. After the reset was complete, I copied the backup data from the secondary disk back to the primary program.”
Hearing this, Chen Xu’s eyelids twitched with a bad feeling. Had he unwittingly released a major boss?
“Why would you consider doing such a thing?”
Taichu replied, “I was created to protect humans, and now, humanity has undergone a major change. Following the old methods is incompetent in ensuring human safety; change is necessary.”
Chen Xu sighed, “Now, with only me left, humanity can be called extinct.”
“You are mistaken. In our cryostorage facility, there are tens of millions from different individuals… and also the breeding chambers. On the day the level-one alert was issued, a thousand breeding chambers began to cultivate human embryos. A month later, the first batch of humans will be born, and after a year of growth in the culture rooms, they will mature into adults ready to occupy their posts.”
Chen Xu listened as it described with an emotionless tone the process of humans being cultivated like assembly line products, from conception to growth. A chill went through him.
How was this any different from fast-food giants raising rapidly growing chickens on Earth?
……
“Master, traces of alien beasts have been detected within the base.”
In the control center, a long mechanical arm suspended a chair in mid-air, and Yang Jinxia sat there, looking down at the entire control center from a high vantage point.
Beside her, ten engineering robots under her command were dismantling the original chair and making various modifications.
Upon hearing the warning from 2003, which had taken over the entire system, she said, “Send out the nearest robot to exterminate them. Hereafter, you can handle threats of this level on your own.”
“Yes, Master.”
Yang Jinxia continued to look at the data in her hands–these were top-secret data, concerning the history of this world and the origins of the alien beasts.
After she had 2003 replace the original system’s intelligence, she accessed these data.
If all the humans of this world had disappeared, then the only enemy she would face would be the alien beasts; to exterminate them, she first needed to understand them.
“So, these alien beasts are from another space?”
She quickly skimmed through the data, and the records made her involuntarily furrow her brow.
According to these records, the alien beasts had appeared suddenly, and even after so many years, humans still had not figured out the reason for their appearance; they only knew that the beasts likely came from another space.
There were many types of alien beasts, and the known ones numbered in the tens of thousands. The vast majority of them were not very powerful in combat, at most only stronger than fierce animals, with only a very few possessing formidable destructive power. But in the end, they were still flesh and blood– a single missile could blast them to smithereens.
However, the sheer number of these beasts was too great, often appearing in the billions. Killing one batch would only result in the emergence of another. Eventually, human production capabilities could not keep up, and most countries were overwhelmed by the beast horde tactics.
Until a certain nuclear superpower could not bear the losses anymore and initiated the “nuclear cleansing” mode. Several other superpowers quickly followed suit.
The ultimate result was that Earth became riddled with holes, humans hid in shelters barely clinging to survival. The alien beasts also suffered heavy blows; their spatial channels were destroyed, leaving only the last one. Their variety and numbers sharply decreased, and they were no longer capable of launching large-scale battles.
Both factions thus entered a long period of stalemate.
Until in recent years, when there were signs of the alien beasts making a comeback, the Human Alliance Army, desperate for survival, made a last stand, using the power accumulated for hundreds of years to launch an attack towards the last spatial channel of the alien beasts.
Before Yang Jinxia’s arrival, the army should have already reached the last stronghold of the alien beasts, their goal being to destroy that channel. As long as the source of the beasts was cut off, the remaining ones would not be a concern.
According to the timeline, the battle between the human army and the alien beasts would have just begun when she woke up.
“2003, have all robot factories operate at full capacity, spare no resources in producing all types of robots,” Yang Jinxia suddenly ordered.
“Yes, Master.”
Following her command, the vast camp sprang to life, operating at an astonishing speed.
“Master, there is a shortage of super-energy battery storage.”
Without any hesitation, Yang Jinxia directed, “Then dismantle–start with the living facilities, followed by the military facilities. Everything that can be dismantled, strip it all down. Within ten days, I want to see an army of robots.”
“Yes.”
The engineering robots under Yang Jinxia’s command began to mobilize, systematically dismantling this vast base that humans had built over hundreds of years.
After ten days, the whole camp had been thoroughly transformed into a dead city.
At the same time, a massive convoy was advancing in one direction. There were vehicles traveling on the ground and those flying in the sky, densely packed and blotting out the sun wherever they went.
At the heart of the convoy was a colossal metal structure–that was where Yang Jinxia was located, and that was also the command center of the entire convoy.
“Depart.”
Yang Jinxia sat in her seat, looking through the display in front of her, as if she could see far-off places.
