Chapter 215 - Chapter 215 215 What world

Chapter 215: 215 What world Chapter 215: 215 What world The night deepened, and Luo Xiyun slept soundly until suddenly her consciousness awoke, and she heard a mechanical voice, “User XX111111 has sent you a love request. Would you like to accept? If you agree, you will become a couple with the other party.”

She was stunned, actually. Who was User XX111111?

At the same time, Bai Jinxuan was recording a program, which also served as promotion for her new song. She had been working until now, and as soon as she got into the car, she couldn’t stay awake any longer, leaned her head against the seatback, and quickly fell asleep.

“User XX111111 has sent you a love request. Would you like to accept? If you agree, you will become a couple with the other party.”

She was confused. What was this all about?

Elsewhere, Yang Jinxia had already gone to bed. She always maintained a good sleep schedule and had recently been focusing on self-care, rarely staying up late.

“User XX111111 has sent you a love request…”

The same voice echoed in her ears.

Upon hearing this message, her eyes revealed a thoughtful expression, and after a moment, a slight smile crossed her lips.

When Chen Xu opened his eyes, he found himself lying in a cramped room.

He sat up and took in his surroundings. The room was no more than ten square meters, with only a single bed that he was lying on, and a table cluttered with various greasy metal parts.

A red garment hung on the wall with some black stains still on it. Its color had also dimmed considerably.

“It seems this time it’s a role-playing kind.”

He was somewhat excited. This was an entirely new form, as in his previous three dreams, he had entered the game as his real self. Now, at last, he had an identity.

“My current identity is that of a repair worker, I suppose.”

After the initial excitement, he quickly got into character, speculating about his role based on the suspected work clothes on the wall and the metal parts piled on the table and floor.

As he observed the room, he tried to recall any details, finding not a single trace of familiarity.

“It seems I’ve acquired this identity, but not any corresponding memories.”

He frowned, thinking that this could easily lead to mistakes.

The system’s hint led him to deduce that this was a multiplayer, online game-type dream. If it were a solo mission, there wouldn’t be a need to emphasize the need for qualifications.

Moreover, he made another discovery; he could finally call up a personal panel of sorts in the dream, which showed that his level was 2, and his personal score was 400. To progress to the next level, he needed 1,000 points.

He mentally tallied the points he had earned from the previous three dreams. It was exactly 400.

The system had hinted that the map level he was currently on was level two, and so was the difficulty, which seemed to be tailored to his current level.

The civilian status wasn’t hard to understand either because he couldn’t pay to win. This dream device, like the games produced by various companies on Earth, was dead set on making money.

The personal panel didn’t show any personal attributes or values, other than displaying score and level. It also had a line of text showing the location of his significant other.

Out of curiosity, he clicked on it and found that the distance between them was over a dozen light-years, with a note that it was too great a distance for contact. He couldn’t help but be speechless.

What did a dozen light-years mean? Most likely in another map entirely, with a slim chance of meeting before the game ended.

Why would the system keep significant others so far apart if they were supposed to be together? It really was nonsensical.

To be honest, he was very curious about who had accepted his love request and became his in-game counterpart. Was it Luo Xiyun, Yang Jinxia, or Bai Jinxuan?

He could make nothing of the three coded names, unable to guess who was who.

His own code was XX111111, and the messages that were sent surely displayed that code and not his name.

Anyone seeing such a message out of the blue would surely first respond with rejection.

Now, someone had agreed. Who could it be?

Deep down, he had a nagging thought about who it might be, but he dared not be certain.

“Forget it, now is not the time to dwell on these things.”

After a while, he shook his head, cast aside the speculations, and refocused his thoughts on what to do next.

He felt hungry and glanced at a digital clock by the bed, which read 7:15.

It must be morning.

He thought to himself, and then he noticed something odd–the room had no windows. Even the walls did not look like the standard concrete structures.

He stepped forward and touched it; the cold sensation confirmed his guess–it was metallic.

“Could this be a metal box?”

The thought flashed through his mind, suppressing the urge to rush out and taking a careful look at the room again. The most valuable thing, obviously, was the table, where there was a briefcase and a gray card-like object.

He picked up the card, which was the size of a bank card, with a chip on one side and the number XX111111 printed on the other, along with his portrait photo and name.

Clearly, this card was some form of identity document, which he carefully pocketed.

Next, he looked at the briefcase beside it; a button was on each side. He pressed one firmly, and the case opened by itself, revealing neatly arranged tools, a stark contrast to the messy room.

He closed the case again and looked above the table, where there was a handle that was obviously meant to be opened.

He stood up, reached for the handle, gave it a pull, and it opened to reveal a compartment, from which a gust of cold air emerged–it was a refrigerator.

The compartment wasn’t large, with only two shelves, filled with palm-sized packets, resembling those squeezable jelly snacks.

He took out a packet and started reading the instructions on it. After a while, a hint of joy appeared on his face–this was a nutritional meal, capable of providing all the energy and nutrients the human body needs.

In a dream where the situation was unclear, finding so much food was like having a reassuring pill. At least for the short term, there was no need to worry about a shortage of food.

He counted; there were around one hundred packets here. Eating three packets a day, it would last him a month.

He tore open a packet and put it in his mouth. It was cherry-flavored and had the consistency of rice pudding. He was genuinely hungry and gobbled it down in a few bites, tossing the packaging into a trash can in the corner.

After a while, he felt fullness in his belly. He closed the refrigerator and continued searching the room.

At the foot of the bed, there were a few boxes piled up, miscellaneous items like clothes. In another corner, there were also several boxes, filled with various parts, including gears and screws, chips, and circuit boards; it was unclear whether they were functional or not.

Apart from that, there was nothing else in the room.

He glanced at the electronic clock by the bed–it was 7:42.

It was time to have a look outside.

He took the red garment hanging on the wall, donned it, and pocketed three days’ worth of meals. He grasped the door handle and pushed the door open.

The door was heavy; the moment it opened, he felt a draft lift his fringe slightly.

Another door was straight ahead, just two or three meters away. Between the two doors was a hallway.

He stepped outside and looked both ways. The corridor was long and had no visible end.

On both sides of the hallway were rooms just like his, densely packed, too many to count.

“What kind of place is this?”

He was somewhat puzzled; there was an odd sense of familiarity about this style. It reminded him of a subsequent dream sequence, the style of a shelter.

The hallways on both sides were empty, all the room doors were shut, and the surrounding silence was so intense, it gave him an uneasy feeling.

He hesitated for a moment, then walked to the door across from him. There he saw a button that looked like a doorbell and pressed it, saying, “Hello, I’m Chen Xu from across the hall.”

No response.

He pressed it a few more times, waited a bit longer, but still no response.

“Could this not be a doorbell?” He thought and went back to his room to press the button, clearly hearing a ding-dong sound inside.

He sighed, intending to close the door behind him but then thought better of it, not wanting the embarrassment if it wouldn’t open later.

Hesitating again, he headed left, ringing the doorbell of each room he passed, but even after walking quite a distance, the doors remained closed.

When he reached the end of the corridor, he was met with another door.

At first, he thought it was a wall, but as he got closer, he realized there was a small gap–it was a metal door.

The door itself was unremarkable, but next to it, on the wall, was a black square panel that seemed to be a sensor area.

He looked back and could no longer see his own door. Along the way, he had been counting doors–there were one hundred and fifty-seven on one side, so three hundred and fourteen in total.

“Hopefully, it’ll open.”

He took out his card and walked over, swiping it on the black panel.

The wall lit up, displaying his personal information, “Level-two Repair Worker, Chen Xu, you are not authorized to enter Zone C3. Please leave.”

Just as he thought.

He felt somewhat dejected; with his current identity being so low-status, if he was confined to this area, there would be nothing he could do.

Still, he didn’t leave straight away; having come this far, he had to at least make an attempt.

“The thing is, I’ve noticed some unusual circumstances and would like to report them.”

The same voice from before responded, “You may report to your supervisor.”

“That’s the very issue I want to report–I can’t contact my supervisor. Moreover, I can’t seem to contact anyone else either. To be precise, so far, I haven’t encountered a single living person.”
