My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 88: Flightless Bird
Chapter 88: Flightless Bird
Nick’s expression was grim after Mijko filled him in on everything he had missed, including Tair’s disappearance. It had just been a few days, but so much had happened.
"Is Sosora doing alright?" Mijko had only mentioned that Sosora had injured her eyes in a fight and had lost her vision. Naturally, she wasn’t doing alright. But Nick was confident that if anyone could push through, it would be her.
Mijko just slowly shook her head.
Nick wasn’t exactly wrong. Sosora was strong-willed like an iron fortress. But there was one thing he hadn’t considered.
She was a member of the Aer tribe.
If she had been from any of the other tribes, she would have been handling it a lot better. She still wouldn’t be able to see, but she could rely on other senses like smell, touch, and hearing.
But what made Sosora a member of the Aer tribe was the ability to fly. It was half her identity.
And in the air, there was nothing to touch. There was nothing to smell. Sound was distorted by the wind if it was too far away.
All members of the Aer tribe relied on their sight almost exclusively when flying. When they were up in the sky, it was the only thing that would give them any useful information. It was the only sense that would let them fly as free as birds.
It was like taking the front legs from a frog. It could still jump, but without the two legs up front to control the jump, it would just slide across the ground and crash head-first into the first solid object around.
Flying blind was impossible.
Sosora was bound to the ground. Unless she wanted repeated concussions, she would never fly again. For someone who learned to fly before they learned to crawl, it was a sentence worse than death.
Seeing the grim expressions on Mjiko and Vafrid, Nick gradually realized that being blind was a big deal.
"At least the bastard who did it is dead," Nick said eventually before looking at Squawks and Lily.
Malak had promised them great fortune in exchange for helping the tribes find Tair and confirm that the Lowat tribe was in cahoots with humans and working with them to commit crimes against Tiabe.
Since they were asking humans for help, they were also braving dangerous waters, but it was a necessary evil. Besides, the Outsider, also a human, was part of it. It was fine.
There was just one problem.
’I don’t think they take credit.’ Nick wasn’t sure how he was supposed to grant their wish of great fortune. He wasn’t exactly wealthy. Even if he were, most of his money was in a bank on Earth.
"...What kind of great fortune is it that the two of you seek?" He asked. Maybe if they wanted something specific, Malak could help him find a solution.
"The greater the better," Squawks answered with a relaxed shrug.
Lily nodded. That sounded about right.
"So, nothing specific? As long as you leave richer than you arrived, you’re happy? Or do you seek fortune as in luck?"
Squawks and Lily tilted their heads in unison.
"Fortune and luck are different things, aren’t they?" Lily asked.
’Language differences, maybe?’ Nick quickly thought. He moved on.
"Alright. Fortune. I don’t exactly have a stack of gold bars lying around, but..." He glanced inside. He had things that shouldn’t exist anywhere else in this world if his impression of it was accurate.
Technology was a few centuries behind Earth. That meant nothing electric.
"Are mostly useless but unique artifacts of value?" He asked.
Squawks raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms.
"Depends."
"If it’s junk, then no. Magic artifacts, on the other hand...If you have those, we’ll take as many as you can spare," Lily added.
’That’s a no, then.’ Anything fancy from inside his house that wasn’t something that could be found in this world required electricity. As soon as those things left his house, they would become junk.
"Books that no one can read?" He suggested.
"Because they’re magic?" Lily asked.
"No. They’re just written in a language that I don’t think anyone but me can speak or read."
"Sounds incredibly useless," Squawks said frankly.
Lily agreed, but she at least had the decency not to say it out loud.
Nick scratched the back of his head. He was at a loss.
"I’m guessing you guys aren’t interested in running a restaurant? I can offer you recipes from far away."
"Recipes for magic?" Lily asked.
"Are you obsessed with magic?" Nick asked bluntly. Ever since she first mentioned it, she had brought it up with every question.
"Aren’t you?" She retorted with a hand on her hip.
"No? I don’t even know what it is," Nick admitted thoughtlessly.
Lily’s jaw dropped.
Nick felt like they were getting sidetracked. Squawks also looked at him in disbelief. He turned to look at the house sitting in the middle of the forest. From what he had learned from the tribes, that thing had appeared from out of nowhere.
And the owner of the house didn’t know magic? Doubtful.
"Are you serious?" Lily eventually asked. Just like Squawks, she had trouble believing Nick’s words.
"Yup. Now—"
"How can you not know what magic is?!" Lily asked concernedly, interrupting Nick’s attempt to get back on track.
But maybe this was just as well since he wasn’t sure how to grant their wish. He also belatedly realized that this was his opportunity to learn about magic.
It was a fantasy world.
How hadn’t he thought of that before?
Who the fuck needed a bow and arrow when there was magic to be learned?
"I guess I never learned, but I don’t mind a crash course," He said, inviting Lily to give him that crash course.
Lily stared at him for a moment before sighing. It didn’t seem like he was lying. She decided to accept his invitation.
"Magic is...You see, magic...When something..." However, she was struggling to find the words for it.
"..." Nick stared at her.
’I understand perfectly.’
