My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 70: Hanging By A Thread
Chapter 70: Hanging By A Thread
A bloodied Nuir stepped into the clearing. Yamanas shot up.
Nuir collapsed face-first to the ground.
"Look what you did!" Kavam tapped Yamanas’ shoulder.
Lora smacked the back of Kavam’s head.
"Maybe wait until after we’ve taken care of the kid?!" She glared at her husband before hurrying over to Nuir.
She flipped him onto his back and brushed the dirt, blood, and hair off his face. It was bruised and beaten. Nuir was in a bad condition. It wasn’t just his face, either. His body was covered in bruises and injuries.
Everyone’s expressions darkened as they saw what Nuir had gone through. They didn’t need to guess who had done it to him, either. It was clear as day that it was the Lowat tribe’s doing. It was retaliation for the humiliation Basla had been forced to endure at the tribal meeting and for getting the attention of all the tribes.
Basla and the elders had tried to sweep it under the rug, and they had done a decent job. Few outsiders knew just how harshly they had treated Nuir. But any more attention on them, and they wouldn’t have been able to hide it as well.
Naturally, it was Nuir’s fault for getting bullied where Sosora could see him.
Nuir had been powerless to resist, but in a moment of opportunity, a moment where his bullies were distracted, he had managed to flee. He ran for his life.
He knew that running and getting caught would only make things worse. He had to run and run and run until he couldn’t get caught. He couldn’t get caught.
He had to run somewhere where his bullies and even his uncle wouldn’t dare chase him. He had to run somewhere he wouldn’t get caught.
There were two such places in the forest. The Asa tribe’s territory and the center of the forest. The Asa tribe was closer to the Lowat tribe than the center, but what was the point in running if he would just be running to his death?
Nuir couldn’t trust the Asa tribe not to hand him back to the Lowat tribe or dispose of him themselves.
However, he knew he could enter the center of the forest and stay alive. He also knew, despite everything, there was at least two people in the forest who didn’t want him dead. Nick and Kai. If he could just get to the center of the forest, everything would be fine.
But it was far away, he was already tired, and the Lowat tribe pursued him.
By the time he arrived, he was already completely drained, and his injuries were already ripped and wide open.
He had arrived, but at what cost?
His injuries were worse than the ones the Midnight Panther incurred against the Roaring Boar. Nick would have been powerless to help him if he had been alone. Even now, the best he could do was provide warm, clean water, clean cloths, and rubbing alcohol.
The real care was being given by Lora. She tended to Nuir and made sure to clean his injuries without worsening them.
It was also a stroke of luck that they had used a herbal concoction in the sausage-making that was similar to what they used when treating the wounds of their warriors. However, if they used it as it was, they would only worsen Nuir’s injuries. After all, the current mix would turn the coagulated blood into crumbly powder that would fall off. It was worse than if his wounds scabbed over on their own.
But they had Issa. She managed to restore the herbal concoction’s original effects with a mix of nearby leaves. They risked angering the monster kings. But they were in the presence of the Outsider. It should be fine.
Besides, what were a couple of monster kings in the face of a dying child?
Eventually, Nuir’s wounds were cleaned and covered. But he had taken a beating. He had a weak and malnourished body to begin with. He wasn’t in the clear yet.
They wrapped him in a blanket and placed him next to the fire before dribbling some water into his mouth. It was the most they could do for him right now.
They looked at each other in silence.
The Ursa tribe wasn’t the only tribe who cared for their young. All of them did.
The Lowat tribe’s actions were unforgivable.
But they had only just calmed down the hostilities. If they did something reckless right now, they risked inflaming the situation again. By then, it wouldn’t stop with some sharp words from Monkey.
Technically speaking, this was also a matter of the Lowat tribe.
There was no doubt that most of the other tribes would support the fact that it was unforgivable to treat such a young child in the way the Lowat tribe had treated Nuir.
But there were two problems.
They found Nuir in the center of the forest. Where was the proof that it was the Lowat tribe’s doing?
Proof was overrated, but in a case like this, it was important. Otherwise, it would set a bad precedent.
If one tribe wanted to start trouble with another tribe, they could just kidnap and beat up one of their kids and say it was the targeted tribe’s doing. It would make the tribes attack an innocent tribe. And if it were discovered, it would, in turn, make the tribes doubtful of anything and everything that was said about the other tribes.
It was a worst-case scenario, but if they didn’t handle this properly, the community of the Tiabe forest might end up in tatters.
Fortunately, they had influential people to witness.
Muhso was a renowned warrior of the Ursa tribe. Yamanas was a member of the Phoriae tribe, and Monkey was one of the three leaders of the Gezercher tribe.
The only problem was that, other than Yamanas, everyone had been on the same side in the tribal meeting. They had reason to frame Basla and the Lowat tribe.
"For now, we need to ensure Nuir’s safety."
