My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 69: Ghost Mijko
Chapter 69: Ghost Mijko
Nick looked up from stirring the vegetables in the wok to see that the tentacle had withdrawn at some point and hidden in the basement. He turned around to Mijko, who had snuck into the house after smelling something delicious. Spurred by her hunger, she dared to enter the abode of the Outsider.
Her eyes were wide with wonder at the glimpse into another civilization. She couldn’t understand half of what she was looking at, but it was amazing. And then, she heard Nick talking, which caught her attention. She looked at him curiously. She didn’t see anyone else around.
Nick raised an eyebrow.
He was a little curious about how Mijko would react to the tentacle, but now wasn’t the time for that.
He was a little surprised that more hadn’t seen it since it seemed like he had been watched pretty diligently. Or maybe he was just imagining it, and he hadn’t been watched that diligently before the incident with Sosora.
"The ghosts of people who entered my dwelling in search of something to quell their hunger but found nothing but eternal rest instead," He answered nonchalantly.
Mijko froze. She looked at Nick with a serious expression, doing her best to control her fear.
"That’s...That’s not funny, Nick."
"I wasn’t trying to be funny."
"..." Mijko started panicking. She had never seen a ghost before, and she was very keen on maintaining that fact until the day she died. She was also planning on dying of old age. She was far from old. Today was not the day she died, and it would not be the day she met a ghost.
"But I was joking," Nick eventually said, since he could tell that Miko was about to become pale enough to make the ghosts think she was one of them. He scooped up a bowl of stir-fried veggies and handed it to Mijko.
"Try this," He ordered.
Any thoughts of ghosts vanished as soon as the concentrate of the faint smell she had sensed leaking from Nick’s house hit her nostrils. She inhaled through her nose deeply with closed eyes.
It smelled great. It was different from the sausage, but she couldn’t wait to put one of the slightly bronzed, fried vegetable pieces in her mouth.
Nick saw her face light up as soon as the first vegetable landed on her tongue and turned around to tend to the stove again. It was a success. Now, he just had to carry the wok outside.
Then, he heard a spoon clink against a bowl. Mijko stood next to him with big, bright eyes and an empty bowl in her hands. She had swept it all down in her stomach in an instant. Nick barely had time to look away from her.
But it wasn’t enough. She needed more!
Fortunately, she had learned from the best. She mimicked Kai’s and Utri’s puppy dog eyes and pleading expressions.
Nick sighed and scooped up another portion. It was not because she was cute enough to convince him. But she clearly needed all the sympathy and food she could get if she was desperate enough to act like that. Nick shook his head as another bowl was swiftly vacuumed up by Mijko.
He wondered if she would end up emptying the overflowing wok all by herself. He scratched the back of his head for a second before rummaging through his cabinets until he found a bowl that he wasn’t already using outside and emptied the stir-fried vegetables into it.
He gave Mijko a sharp look.
"This is not all for you. Take this and the bowls outside. Share. Okay?"
Mijko nodded, wiping the drool from the corner of her mouth. Nick sighed.
"I’m making more, don’t worry." With that, Mijko could rest easy. She carried out what Nick asked her to carry out.
It was a good thing that Nick didn’t peek out the window, though. If he did, he would have seen that the amount of stir-fried vegetables in the bowl had already decreased by a noticeable amount.
Mijko may be small, but her appetite wasn’t. As soon as she got access to food after being bullied out of the sausages for so long, she devoured it like her stomach was bottomless.
However, the others weren’t any better. They had eaten a lot of hefty, meaty sausage but were still hungry enough to help Mijko clear the bowl of stir-fried vegetables. After all, four of them were from the Ursa tribe.
Even if their appetites weren’t as proportionally large as Mijko’s their stomachs were still big. They could eat a lot. Yamanas and Utri could eat alot. Issa could eat a lot once she relaxed a little. Monkey could probably eat the most.
Tilo, Sosora, and Malak were the only ones who knew moderation. It was not enough to weigh up the others’ ravenous appetites. They could hardly wait for the second round of stir-fry to accompany the next batch of sausages.
Nick was relieved that he hadn’t tried feeding everyone with what he had at home. It would have run out before everyone could even get one portion. He was also relieved that the stir-fried vegetables turned out well. He had been worried.
Naturally, he ate a portion himself.
It inspired him, and he couldn’t wait to experiment with the vegetables that were left. It wasn’t enough for another batch of stir-fry, but it also wasn’t enough to warrant the others taking it back. He was interested in knowing how the vegetables would mix with what he had left from Earth and other recipes he knew.
He had a feeling that the brown stalk he had tasted would do well in stews.
With a smile on his face, Nick carried out the wok with the second round of stir-fry.
However, he wasn’t the only one to set foot on his lawn.
At first, everyone looked at Nick. To be more exact, they were looking at the steaming wok in his hands.
Then, they heard a rustling loud enough to drown out the crackling from the orange coalbed.
They turned toward it.
