Chapter 52: Meeting Start

The different tribes of Tiabe varied in size. Several of them were small in stature compared to humans, such as the Gezercher tribe or the Orovir tribe. Naturally, several of them were also big compared to humans.

There was the Seg tribe. They towered over most humans with their long legs and necks. The Husr tribe was also bigger than humans with their bulky bodies.

There were also a couple of tribes who had a tendency to be bigger than humans. That included the Asa and Phoriae tribes.

But if there was one tribe famous for the size of its members, regardless of the shape they took, it was the Ursa tribe. They were also a tribe where size equaled strength. The bigger they were, the stronger they were.

Of course, there were exceptions.

This was not one of them.

Musho’s shadow seemed to reach the other end of the room as he entered the meeting hall. He was the second of the ones present to have to duck slightly to get in under the doorframe. The other was Layas, the Seg tribe’s representative.

Muhso wasn’t just big, either. He was muscular with a thick enough layer of fat to make him appear even more massive. It was not enough to hide the outlines of his muscles, though.

It wasn’t Sosora’s first encounter with someone from the Ursa tribe. She was familiar with Lora and Kavam, after all. But Musho was at least a couple of heads taller than those two, who were already several heads taller than Sosora.

But his steps were deceptively light. They were barely audible as he made his way over to an available seat.

He chose the one next to the Aer tribe, making his stance clear. He crossed his arms and leaned back in the chair that seemed too small for him. The meeting could start.

The silence hung for a few moments in the hall. Gradually, people started looking at Basla. He was the one who had called this meeting. Although he wasn’t the only one with things to say, it was his duty to lead it.

Basla was a little awkward since he hadn’t expected the Ursa tribe to send a representative, but he cleared his throat and stood up.

"Greetings, everyone. I have called for these meetings for one reason." He took a pause for dramatic effect before pointing at Sosora just as dramatically.

"Her! Sosora of the Aer tribe crossed several boundaries in an incident more than a week ago. Not only did she enter the Lowat tribe’s territory without prior notice, but she also interfered in the internal matters of the tribe and physically assaulted several of our younger members." Balsa took back his hand and cleared his throat again. Dramatic effect.

"Now, if she had apologized and embraced her wrongs at once, we could have let it go. Us Tribes have to stick together through thick and thin, after all. But far from apologizing, Sosora of the Aer tribe has continuously disrespected us and all the other tribes with her stubbornness.

"If we allow this behavior to go unpunished, to continue, it sets a bad precedent. Must all of us fear the sudden and violent intrusion of others?

"Today, it was the Lowat tribe, tomorrow, it could be any of you. Today, it was a ’light scuffle’ between youngsters and bullies. Tomorrow, it could be a lethal fight between warriors. This is the first step to losing our hard-earned peace—"

"Heh." A chuckle interrupted Basla’s wordy speech. Basla turned with a glare toward the source only to stiffen slightly.

In preparation for this meeting and all others, the Lowat elders had crammed information on Monkey into Basla’s head.

Seeing the disdainful look on Monkey’s face, Basla frowned, but he managed to control his anger.

"Is this entertaining, Monkey? I doubt you’d think the same if it were your children and grandchildren lying in bed with broken bones right now."

Monkey raised an eyebrow and snorted.

"Sure I would. But you’re mistaken about something, brat. The youngsters of my tribe wouldn’t be lying in the sickbed for three reasons.

"First, they wouldn’t give Sosora of the Aer tribe a reason to beat them up. Second, they wouldn’t get that badly beaten. Third, even if they were, they wouldn’t be lying in bed complaining about it." Monkey leaned forward and looked Basla dead in the eyes.

"Do you know what the common difference between the two situations is?" He asked before answering the question himself.

"Upbringing. I lead my tribe. Your father, on the other hand, lets his tribe rot from the inside out." Monkey scoffed and leaned back in his chair again.

"This whole thing is ridiculous. Sosora of the Aer tribe shouldn’t be punished. If anything, the kids bullying the tribe leader’s grandchild should be the ones to receive the punishment," Monkey said, expressing his opinion on the matter.

He got agreement from the Aer tribe, the Seg tribe, and even the Ursa tribe. The Husr, Bawin, and Orovir tribes stayed silent.

Four against four. The Vedel, Jakka, and Uaya tribes looked at the humiliated Basla. This wasn’t going as planned.

If the Gezercher and Ursa tribes hadn’t supported the Aer tribe and Sosora, it would have been a lot easier. But with Monkey speaking for the Gezercher tribe, their vote weighed heavily. The Ursa tribe was also outside their expectations.

They had heard that the Ursa tribe was friends with the Outsider. Why were they getting involved in this dispute?

If it were about kids getting hurt, shouldn’t they be supporting the side with the most kids hurt, all of whom had been hurt by someone several years older than them?

Basla could feel the atmosphere shifting.

The Jakka, Uaya, and Vedel tribes had been willing to support him when they didn’t have anything to lose.

Going against the Ursa tribe wasn’t a problem. But going against Monkey and the Gezercher tribe was.

Basla had to take the loss. He gritted his teeth and bowed his head.

"Alright. We will not seek punishment for Sosora for this matter. But we still need to discuss matters concerning the safety of this forest, matters Sosora of the Aer tribe is related to."
