Chapter 51: Tribes Assembled

Before Sosora could take it the wrong way and throw a fuss about the impossibility of the task, Monkey smiled.

"A couple of seconds later, and I wouldn’t have accepted it," He said simply, tapping Sosora’s forehead to make her frown go away.

"You...You’re saying I did it?" She asked in disbelief. She wasn’t sure if she could trust Monkey’s words.

Monkey nodded.

"And just in time. We have a meeting to attend." He stood up and jumped out of the cave, plummeting to the ground. Sosora hurried to look out over the edge.

Surely he wasn’t just dropping straight to the ground. He held onto the wall and climbed down, right? Otherwise, he would be insane.

Sosora’s eyes widened, and her jaw almost raced to catch up to Monkey.

The Gezercher leader landed on the ground below the cliff with a soft thud. He glanced up at Sosora and grinned.

Sosora picked her jaw back up and crawled off the cliff, diving down.

The difference between her and Monkey, however, was the fact that she had wings. She could fly. They were also the only parts of her body that weren’t tired. So, she flew next to Monkey to the meeting that was held in one of the few neutral zones in the forest.

She was satisfied at having succeeded at Monkey’s challenge, but as they traveled to the meeting, she couldn’t help but be a little frustrated.

It was not because Monkey could decide her and Nick’s fate on a whim. That much was natural for someone like him. Rather than be frustrated at that, she should be frustrated at herself for not having the strength to do something about it.

That was actually close to the reason why she was frustrated right now.

She knew where they were headed, so she didn’t have to follow Monkey like she’d needed to follow the guide a week ago. She had been planning to put her well-rested wings on full display and fly there in a jiffy to show Monkey that she wasn’t weak.

It didn’t go as planned.

Monkey leaped and swung from branch to branch with the same ease as if he were taking a leisurely walk. Sosora couldn’t even understand how he was moving as quickly as he was with those slow and gentle movements.

She could barely keep up with his speed, much less outrun him. It was frustrating.

But they arrived at the meeting spot before the frustration could sink in.

At the speed they traveled, it didn’t take long before they arrived at the large wooden hut. It was an ancient building that had been used as the meeting hall for any inter-tribal issues or forest-related matters for ages.

It was mostly a roof on a couple of separated walls. It would offer decent protection against the rain, but only wind from very specific directions. The entrances were wide enough for people from all tribes to enter. It was also big enough inside for multiple representatives from each tribe to be present without it becoming cramped.

When they arrived, members of several other tribes were there. Malak stood behind two elders from the Bawin tribe, Elder Kobo and Elder Atarak.

Basla sat in his chair with his arms and legs crossed and had a couple of elders behind him. Beside him were members of the tribes that supported him.

The Jakka tribe had one, strong-looking person represent them. Large, round, dark, furry ears on the top of his head, and lighter fur with spots covered his skin. He had a slightly elongated nose and mouth.

The Uaya tribe was represented by two women with long ears pointing right up from on top of their heads. One of them had a button nose and whiskers. Both of them had wide eyes and seemed ot look at everything with an uncanny intensity.

The Lowat tribe’s third ally, the Vedel tribe, also had only one person representing them. A tall, skinny man with scales on his cheeks and horizontal pupils in his green eyes.

Other than them, the Seg tribe had sent a representative. A four-legged tree stood separate from both the Lowat group and the Bawin tribe.

The Orovir group had sent a slightly older woman who sat on the opposite side of the tree from the Seg tribe. Not far from her, a big, burly woman with small eyes and a bored expression sat with her feet on the stone table that connected them all. She was from the same Husr tribe as Vafrid.

Taire, a warrior from the Aer tribe, was also there to represent the Aer tribe. Sosora wasn’t sure if that was a good thing, though. Taire was old enough to remember the time when the Aer tribe wanted to oversee the other tribes’ activities. And if she recalled correctly, he wasn’t a fan of it.

That meant he wouldn’t necessarily take her side, especially after her escape from house arrest.

And with Monkey representing the Gezercher tribe, a full ten tribes were present. Most of them had only sent one person, but it was still an impressive turnout for a matter as small as the dispute between individuals of two tribes.

There was also the matter of the Outsider.

Sosora didn’t know what had brought so many tribes to the meeting today. It could be the things Basla’s group were trying to push, using her actions as an example, or it could be a potentially dangerous Outsider.

Sosora was tempted to stand behind Monkey when she saw the harsh glare Tair shot her when he saw her enter, but she had to follow tradition and stand on the spot for their tribe. Monkey gave her a reassuring nod before she left, though.

Since it looked like all the tribes that were going to be present were present, they didn’t see any reason to wait, especially Basla. He was already bored out of his mind. He had gotten up early to be on time and set a good start to the meeting, only to end up first to arrive.

However, before they could get started, a representative arrived from an unexpected tribe.
