My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 110: Help
Chapter 110: Help
Sosora ate her burger and the next before the others dared to talk to her and joined her at the table with the food they had prepared, whether it be grilled steak or just patties. At first, they had to force themselves to talk about whatever they could think of since they weren’t sure how to act around Sosora.
But it didn’t take long for the conversation to derail and flow naturally. Sosora might be blind and in the midst of a deep emotional upheaval, but she was still Sosora. She was still their friend. That hadn’t changed. They could talk to her as usual.
Unintentionally or not, they steered clear of serious topics like the current state of the forest and what had happened between the tribes following the incident at the Orovir tunnels.
Malak stepped back and double-checked to make sure that Sosora would be fine before grabbing Nick’s attention and pulling him to the side so that they could talk just the two of them.
"I’m not much for beating around the bush, Nick, so I’ll just go ahead and ask...Do you know of a way to help her?" Malak asked as soon as they were far away enough from the others that they wouldn’t hear.
"I assume you mean a way to restore her sight?" Nick asked just to be sure. It could have been that Malak just wanted a guide on how to help newly blind people adjust to a life without vision.
Malak nodded.
Nick was an Outsider with mysterious knowledge and tools and an even more mysterious background. The healers of the tribes who had offered help couldn’t do anything. The most they could do was remove the pain and turn the wound into a scar. But they couldn’t fix her eyes.
"I..." Nick was going to say that he didn’t know, but stopped himself. He might not know. But he knew someone who actually had a mysterious background.
He glanced inside. It wasn’t the situation he had thought, but it was as good a situation as any, really.
"I don’t. Follow me," He said simply, turning around to head inside.
Malak furrowed his brow but followed Nick. It was his first time stepping inside Nick’s house. He was both curious and worried.
To his knowledge, both Sosora and Mijko had been inside, but they refused to share any details out of respect for Nick. Kai and Nuir had also been inside, but Kai couldn’t talk, and Nuir had yet to return from his adventure with the Midnight Panther.
"Whatever you do, don’t be afraid, alright?" Nick asked, opening the front door. The basement door was closed until Malak stepped in and Nick could close the door behind him.
Malak looked around curiously until he noticed the basement door opening on its own out of the corner of his eye.
"This...I’m not sure what to say to prepare you, but I’m not alone. This here is Miss Tentacle. She’s...the reason I can stay here and a bunch of other stuff." Following Nick’s introduction, the tentacle gently peeked out from behind the door, concealing as much of the darkness of her basement as possible.
Malak stiffened. His rational mind was telling him that it was just a tentacle, similar to the ones on the freshwater octopi in the lake. It was clearly bigger, a different color, and different.
But it was a tentacle. There was no need for fear to flood his body with ice.
His instincts, in contrast to his rational mind, were telling him the opposite.
That wasn’t a tentacle.
It was...His instincts couldn’t tell him what it was. And his mind couldn’t interpret his instincts properly.
All he could understand was that it was dangerous. It engraved a deep sense of horror into his bones, and the longer he stared at it, the worse it got.
Nick snapped his fingers in front of Malak’s eyes, snapping him out of it and helping him look away from the tentacle.
As soon as he averted his gaze, Malak’s skin could finally break out in a cold sweat, and the ice in his veins could begin to thaw. The horror engraved on his bones also started to fade like distant memories.
"Wh–what...?" Malak didn’t even know what he wanted to ask. He was just confused.
"It’s not the same, but if it helps you understand, think of her as a monster king or something," Nick said, inspecting Malak’s expression.
"But she’s not dangerous or anything!" He hurriedly added.
"Well, she technically is, but she’s kind and willing to help. Right, Miss Tentacle?" Nick turned to the tentacle, who nodded.
Malak frowned.
For now, he decided to set aside thinking and understanding the current situation.
According to Nick, this could be his hope of finding something that could help Sosora. That was more important than figuring out whatever kind of monster king could etch such fear into his body just from him glimpsing the tip of its tentacle.
"Is there a way to help Sosora?" He asked straightforwardly.
The tentacle nodded.
"That’s a yes," Nick explained.
"What is it?" Malak asked.
The tentacle stared at him.
"The answer to that question is too complex to be communicated through simple gestures."
"Are you saying I need to guess the answer myself?" Malak frowned. That was as good as telling him to figure it out on his own.
Nick looked at Malak before tilting his head.
"Don’t you already have enough of an answer, though? There is a way to help Sosora. There are probably multiple ways to do it, actually. Depending on how you look at it, what you’ve done so far is helping her."
Malak shook her head.
"You don’t understand. Sosora...She can’t stand not being able to see. I don’t understand it myself. But I’ve talked to the others in the Aer tribe. Being blind is worse than it is for us landlocked beings. The only way to navigate reliably through the air is through sight.
"A deaf bird might have a hard time. Birds who can’t smell...that’s a lot of them. Birds who can’t taste lead boring culinary lives. Birds who can’t feel struggle to grab their prey and don’t know if they’ve missed." Malak looked Nick dead in the eyes. His voice was filled with fiery determination.
"There is no such thing as a blind bird.
"I have to help her get her sight back! Even if I have to leave the forest! Even if I have to overturn every last stone in this world, I’ll do it!"
