Chapter 109: Soft And Juicy
Chapter 109: Soft And Juicy
Sosora could smell the delicious scent of cooking long before they arrived at Nick’s place. It stirred her hunger for the first time since she woke up. She finally felt like eating.
At the same time, it roused her frustration again. She could smell the food, and she knew in her head where Nick’s place was. Her body was also fully functional. She wanted to rush forward and see what Nick was cooking.
It smelled differently from anything he had made before.
But because the two marbles in her head had been scratched a little, she had to walk at half the speed of a snail. She had to lift her feet and put them down gently. Straight up and straight down.
She also had to pay attention to what Malak was saying and doing since he was guiding her away from the trees that she was about to walk straight into every fifth laborious step she took.
A trip that wouldn’t have even taken her twenty minutes before she went blind now took her several hours.
The delicious smell only made it that much worse.
The only things that helped distract her were the loud sounds of both her and Malak’s hearts beating like wild horses racing across a vast field and the smell of paper, wood, stone, and sweat from Malak.
She almost couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought or noticed how good he smelled before.
But of course, he smelled good. He was a good man. Too good for her.
Sosora might be blind, but she wasn’t stupid. She noticed how hard this was on Malak. He really didn’t need to suffer with her.
However, the smell of food grew stronger as they got closer, and soon, Sosora’s stomach rumbled so loudly that it was the only thing she cared about. Freeing Malak could come afterward.
Malak guided Sosora to her seat at the table Nick had taken out.
Nick looked at Sosora for a moment.
He could greet her, welcome her back, and mention how it had been a while since they last saw each other. He could ask her how she was doing or give her some comforting words.
But other than the first couple of times, their greetings were so short they were barely noticeable. Why say ’hello’ when they said it with every look and gesture? At this point, it was just an unnecessary formality.
At this point, giving Sosora a formal greeting would just put distance between them. It was the last thing Sosora needed.
It was the same with anything else.
He didn’t need to ask how she was doing. It was obvious. Her skin was pale, she was gaunt, and her expression was tired.
It was clear that she was looking forward to the food and that she had enjoyed the walk with Malak. Lit candles in a storm.
Any verbal comfort would be hollow and as useful as spitting on a forest fire.
Nick skipped that and grabbed Sosora’s hands.
"You eat this with your hands...Is redundant information, I guess. But it’s one big thing that you hold onto and take bites from. It’s soft and juicy, so be ready," He said and guided her hands toward the burger.
He remembered those game shows where contestants had to put their hands into a box they couldn’t see into and figure out what it was they were touching. He had also done similar things himself.
Unexpected textures when one couldn’t see what one was touching were scary. It lets one’s imagination run wild. What it can be is scarier than what it actually is.
From the others, Nick had learned that Tiabe wasn’t a stranger to bread. But the forest was a stranger to bread as soft as the ones he had made.
But all the words in the world wouldn’t make Sosora know what it was she was touching. So, she just had to bear with it.
Besides, she wasn’t a squeamish girl.
As expected, she flinched a little when touching the smooth surface of the bread. Since Nick had said soft and juicy, she thought it would be more like a cooked vegetable or meat. Instead, it was slightly rough like the bark of a young tree while also being smooth. It was odd.
She sniffed.
Bread?
Nick let go of her hands and let Sosora gently fumble around the hamburger with her fingers. She flinched again when she strayed from the upper bun to the salad sticking out beneath, and again when she touched the hot patty.
Of course, it wasn’t hot enough to burn her. Far from it, since it had been waiting for her a little while now. But it was hotter than the slightly cool salad and the bread. It was also a little wet and slimy.
That was where the juicy part in Nick’s description came in.
Sosora pushed down on the bun. It was soft, almost unbelievably so. That explained how she was supposed to eat it.
When she was ready, she grabbed it.
There weren’t many ways to hold a burger without it falling apart. It had already started doing that during the inspection, but it was thanks to the inspection that Sosora could hold it properly and guide it toward her mouth.
That was where the next problem came. She missed slightly.
It was her first time eating something other than the soup that Malak had fed her after she woke up. She wasn’t used to eating without being able to see the food she put in her mouth or without the edge of Malak’s spoon touching her lip.
The others wouldn’t judge or mock her. But Sosora was still so embarrassed and frustrated that she almost threw the damn thing away.
Fortunately, she was too hungry, and it smelled too good. She quickly just pushed the burger along her face until it found her mouth.
She was dirty and covered in meat juice. It was disgraceful. She wanted to cry.
The heat on her cheeks was from embarrassment and the burger, not tears.
