Chapter 164: Fever not going down(2)
Dr. Jeong stood at the foot of Xue Mei’s bed, carefully reviewing the latest set of vital signs. A small smile of satisfaction crossed his face as he looked up at the monitors.
"Her temperature has come down to 37.8 Celsius," he announced to the team. "Still slightly elevated, but a significant improvement from earlier."
The younger nurse nodded, checking the IV lines. "Blood pressure has stabilized at 110/70, and heart rate is down to 85 BPM," she reported.
Dr. Jeong moved to Xue Mei’s side, gently placing a hand on her forehead. It was cool to the touch, a stark contrast to the burning heat from hours before. Xue Mei’s breathing had become more regular, and some color had returned to her cheeks.
"The broad-spectrum antibiotics seem to be working," Dr. Jeong observed. "Her white blood cell count is trending downward."
Just then, Dr. Liu from Obstetrics entered the room, carrying a portable ultrasound machine. "How’s our patient doing?" she asked.
"Much better," Dr. Jeong replied. "We’ve managed to bring her fever under control. Are you ready to check on the embryo?"
Dr. Liu nodded, setting up the ultrasound. As she ran the wand over Xue Mei’s lower abdomen, the room fell silent, all eyes fixed on the small screen.
After a tense moment, a rapid fluttering appeared on the monitor. Dr. Liu smiled, "There we go. Fetal heartbeat is strong and regular. It looks like the little one weathered the storm."
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the room. The older nurse patted Xue Mei’s hand gently. "You hear that, dear? You both made it through."
Dr. Jeong made some notes on Xue Mei’s chart. "We’ll continue to monitor her closely, but I think we can safely say we’ve turned a corner. Great work, everyone."
As they wheeled her bed out of the ICU, Tang Xue Mei blinked at the change in lighting. The hallway seemed brighter compared to the dimmed lights of the intensive care unit.
"How are you feeling, Xue Mei?" Dr. Jeong asked as they moved down the corridor.
"Better," she replied softly, her voice a bit hoarse. "The room isn’t spinning anymore."
"Happy to hear that, you managed to pull through in time and the babies are safe. But next time even if you have just a normal cold or cough endeavor you come to the hospital. You’ll be prune to fevers and cold as your pregnancy grows from what I can see.."
Tang Xue Mei sighed and nodded she would have to be extra careful from now on.
"I’ve called them in, they’ll be here soon.."
The hospital room door opened quietly, and Tang Xue Mei turned her head towards her visitors. Auntie Gu entered first, her face filled with concern, followed by Butler Wang and An Yu.
"Young Madam," Auntie Gu said softly, approaching the bed. "How are you feeling ?"
Tang Xue Mei managed a weak smile. "A little better, Auntie Gu. The fever has subsided somewhat. Thank you for taking care of me."
"It’s nothing, it’s my job and I enjoy doing it.."
Tang Xue Mei smiled and beaconed Auntie Gu to sit on the bed.
Butler Wang smiled, heaving a sigh of relief to see that Tang Xue Mei was slowly recovering her rosy complexion back. "Young Madam, it brings us great relief to see that you’re improving, auntie Gu has been giddy all morning."
An Yu’s eyes continuously scanned the room, his posture alert yet unobtrusive. "Security measures are in place.." he reported in a low voice. "I’ve personally overseen the vetting of all staff on this floor."
Tang Xue Mei smiled and nodded, after spending a day or two in the hospital she would be able to go home the next.
Auntie Gu fussed with Tang Xue Mei’s blankets. "Have you been able to eat, Young Madam? You still look so pale."
"The hospital food is okay, Auntie Gu.." Tang Xue Mei assured her. "And the doctor Jeong says the baby is doing well, so I’m really fine."
As visiting hours came to an end, Auntie Gu gently patted Tang Xue Mei’s hand. "We’ll return tomorrow, Young Madam. Please rest and regain your strength."
Butler Wang quipped. "Do not hesitate to inform us if you require anything, Young Madam. We are at your service."
"Auntie Gu can you stay, there’s another bed over there..."
Auntie Gu smiled and nodded she would feel more at rest, seeing Tang Xue Mei in person.
"Oh but I still have to get some food for later..."
"Don’t worry about it, I can sadly only eat hospital for today.."
Tang Xue Mei lips twitched, the food tasted so bland it made her insides feel sad.
"Well come to see tomorrow, young madam.."
Butler Wang bowed and left with An Yu, leaving auntie Gu and Tang Xue Mei to themselves.
"Ai yah...I forgot about change of clothes!"
Tang Xue Mei chuckle seeing auntie Gu fret over every little thing.
"You don’t have to worry, we can always order some.."
Auntie Gu shook her head "Why la? When we have clothes at home, so wasteful.."
"Haha...is it wasteful auntie Gu? We love getting more new clothes.."
"Ai yah you young people, always wasteful, i remember a lady touched the hem of the young master’s shirt, just the hem...and he tossed it into the trash.."
Tang Xue Mei chuckled it sounded exactly like what Feng Shihan would do.
"He’s very particular about who touches him you know..."
"Very narcissistic as well.." Auntie Gu added shaking her head, the young master was also a handful sometimes.
"The feng men always loved to the praise their looks, his father loved flaunting his looks at the madam, something she found very annoying.."
Tang Xue Mei smiled being here with auntie Gu definitely made things less boring.
"I didn’t get to eat the buffet food after all..."
Tang Xue Mei slumped on the bed, sulking she didn’t go the proposal party and what’s worse she didn’t even get to taste the buffet food.
"Haha I saved them for you or we can just hire the catering team.."
"Err isn’t that being wasteful?"
"Nope not when it’s food being involved.."
