Chapter 28: The Discovery of the Island (Extra)
Author’s Note:
This is just how the Blue Dragon Claws group ended up discovering the island. It’s not required reading — just extra details no one asks for, but I enjoy including them.
-----------------
In a room at an inn, a shirtless red-haired young man lay beside an elven beauty. The morning sunlight began to peek into the room, waking him up.
As he slowly opened his eyes, a headache hit him the moment he realized he was awake. Seemed like a routine thing, so he didn’t care much and just sat up in bed.
"Ugh, think I drank too much last night..." he murmured, turning slightly toward the bed.
He saw the elf, hired for nighttime services, sleeping peacefully beside him.
Looking a bit lower, he saw her exposed thick thighs... and couldn’t resist.
With a light slap to her thigh, he stood up, making the elf jolt a little but quickly settle down.
She stretched lazily and asked,
"Already leaving, Mark?~"
Grabbing his pants and shirt off the floor, Mark replied,
"Got more quests to take care of. But don’t worry, I’ll be back tonight."
"Hmm~, then I’ll be waiting~"
He got dressed, and the elf waved him off with a small flick of her hand.
He returned the gesture and left the room with sleepy eyes and a puffed-up face.
Like hell I’m coming back... better hire someone else, that wild side of hers really isn’t my thing...
Going downstairs, he dropped a few silver coins on the counter. Since he was a regular, he could pay in the morning before leaving.
With the night paid, he walked toward the guild.
Inside, his party were already waiting.
The first to speak was a half-elf.
"Sleeping Beauty finally woke up. Judging by your face, looks like someone drank a bit too much last night."
Mark looked at her and pulled a tired face.
"Shut it, midget."
"What did you just call me, torch-head?"
"That doesn’t even make sense. Are you a child or something?"
"You called me a child?! You wanna die?"
In the back, the other two party members were drinking and casually watching the argument.
"They’re off to a good start this morning~" said the woman who seemed to be the group’s healer.
Beside her, a large lizardman calmly added,
"Silvia, you enjoy their drama, don’t you?"
"Eh~, of course not, Norkim~," she replied teasingly, still watching. "But seriously, why don’t those two just get married already?"
The two stopped arguing and turned to Silvia. Mark was the first to speak.
"What the hell are you talking about? Me? Marry a flat-chested gremlin like her?"
The half-elf snapped back immediately.
"Excuse me? Me? Marry this jerk? He changes women like he changes clothes — who’d want that?"
Silvia laughed and waved it off.
"Okay~, you win. I’ll drop it."
Norkim, clearly tired of the nonsense, cut in bluntly.
"Good, now that that’s over... Can we finally take a quest?"
Despite Mark being the group leader, their banter didn’t really show it — not that anyone minded.
Agreeing with the idea, they walked to the mission board to look for A- or B-rank quests.
On the board were:
[Hunt a Giant Rabbit – Rank B – 50 silver]
[Investigate an Orc Settlement – Rank B – 30 silver]
[Collect Three Phoenix Feathers – Rank A – 10 gold]
[Explore the Death Canyon Ruins – Rank A – 5 gold]
Mark looked at the papers and commented,
"No way in hell I’m going after phoenix feathers."
Erin, the half-elf, replied without looking at him,
"Finally something we agree on."
"Tsk."
Mark grabbed two papers and turned around. Erin asked,
"What’d you pick?"
"Hunting the rabbit and exploring the canyon."
"What? You trying to kill us? I joined for the money, not to dive headfirst into death."
"Yeah, yeah. Relax. It’ll be fine."
She sighed and followed. They were heading the same way anyway.
This guy... if it weren’t for the money, I’d have quit already...
Meeting up with the rest of the group, who had also grabbed quests, they tossed their picks on the table:
[Explore the Death Canyon Ruins – Rank A – 5 gold]
[Hunt a Giant Rabbit – Rank B – 50 silver]
[Capture Three Trolls – Rank B – 90 silver]
[Escort a Merchant Caravan – Rank C – 20 silver]
Mark eyed one paper and asked,
"Why’d you pick the caravan mission?"
"Hm~, figured it’s a good fallback. They pay well and often have bonuses," Silvia answered.
"But the problem is the destination’s way too far. Not sure it’s worth it."
Mark replied, thinking it over.
Erin pointed to another sheet.
"Why not go with the rabbit and troll hunts?"
"You know how hard it is to even find a troll?" Mark asked.
"Nope... But it’s probably still easier than going to Death Canyon."
Mark sighed and turned to the group.
"Anyone backing her idea? I’d still rather do the canyon."
The group went silent for a few seconds.
"Guess I’ll go with the canyon too~"
"This time I’m with Mark. Canyon it is..."
With three votes to one, the matter was settled.
"Argh, seriously? Fine, let’s get this over with," Erin said, annoyed but resigned.
"So we’re going with the rabbit and the canyon."
Mark took the papers to the reception. After confirming the requests, he returned.
"All set. Let’s head out."
Under the morning sun, they left the guild.
The morning walk was uneventful — just the usual adventuring groups passing by.
But in the afternoon, something strange showed up: a forest littered with scattered corpses.
"Ew, why are there so many werewolf bodies here?" Erin said, poking one with her staff.
"I wouldn’t poke them if I were you. Who knows if one’s still alive?" Mark joked.
Erin shot him a look, sighing like she was dealing with a child.
Mark continued,
"Better take a detour. Don’t wanna run into something nasty..."
He opened his pouch — two healing potions and one stamina potion.
"Yep, new path it is."
As they turned off the road, Erin spoke again,
"This is too weird... Why so many corpses? And none of the adventurers we passed mentioned it?"
Silvia replied,
"Sometimes stuff like this happens~, maybe no one came this way."
"But still—"
"Can you shut up already? You trying to jinx us or something?" Mark snapped.
Annoyed, Erin smacked him on the back of the head with her staff — a hollow thud.
Mark grabbed the spot and turned toward her, furious.
"Try that again, see what happens, hellspawn."
"Hmph, if you had a brain in there, I bet it wouldn’t even hurt."
"What the actual fuck are you saying? You looking to get your ass kicked?!"
Mark started toward her, but Silvia cut in.
"Chill, children~ Any more of this and you’re really gonna end up dating~" she teased.
"Tsk. Lucky you," he muttered, turning away.
Silvia chuckled.
"Reminds me of my youth~"
As they walked through the trees, something strange happened — they were going uphill.
Erin, the least athletic of the group, started to complain.
"Hey, this really is the right path, yeah?" she asked, panting.
"Should be. We went left and then right, so logically this is the way." Mark answered.
Eventually, they reached an open area — a cliff.
...
"...We’re on the wrong side of the ruins, dumbass," Erin broke the silence.
Scratching his messy red hair, Mark shouted,
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
Silvia laughed in the back, and Norkim stared into the cliff below.
Erin just sighed.
"Let’s head back. It’s getting late. Maybe we’ll run into that giant rabbit on the way."
Mark calmed down, kicking a stone off the cliff in frustration.
As everyone turned to leave, Norkim kept staring at the sunset.
"Guys, look at the sun," he said.
"Oh come on, not now..." Mark groaned.
"No, I’m serious. There’s a line across the sun."
Reluctantly, they turned — and saw it. A streak cutting across the horizon.
"Hey, could that be a floating island? But with that size..."
Mark trailed off, and Erin picked it up.
"Yeah. Must be kilometers wide."
"We have to report this immediately. Might even score a fat reward."
Without another word, Mark sprinted ahead, yelling,
"I’ll go first! Take your time!"
Silvia shouted after him,
"I marked some trees on the way!"
From the distance, he yelled back,
"Got it!"
"Ahh, youth~"
And with that, the news reached the city. The guild sent another team on horseback with magic scrolls for fast communication.
That team also confirmed the island — but saw no corpses on the path.
Afterward, a huge party was held at the guild to celebrate the discovery. If the island turned out to be a dungeon, the group would receive a small cut of the profits.
