Chapter 21: A Quiet Morning

In a dimly lit room, someone sighed while staring at the ceiling.

"Haah, I can’t sleep with these memories..."

Sitting on the bed and looking at his reflection, a blond boy with blue eyes, around sixteen years old, stared back at him from the mirror.

Letting out a faint laugh, Darui murmured,

"Haha, I thought I was over this when I stopped thinking about it..."

Remembering the events that led to someone’s death—and nearly everyone’s—Darui rubbed his face.

I... should just stop thinking about it and check the system. There are things I haven’t seen yet...

He muttered, "Status."

A window popped up.

Name: Darui Lantches

Race: Human?

Level: 3

Strength: 17

Agility: 17

Dexterity: 15

Intelligence: 12

Points: 0

Sub-System: Harem

Hm, something new was added... I wonder if I get a Skill, will it show up as magic too?

The system answered even though the question wasn’t meant for it:

[Yes. The more you know about the system and the higher your level, the more information will be revealed.]

Reading that, then looking at the new thing that had appeared,

Hm... I’m not really into harems...

Before he could think any further, the system started to load.

[Because it was the system’s previous choice based only on efficiency, I will give you three options. Choose one...]

The window flickered and displayed the info:

[Harem:] Allows strength sharing between partners. Since you can have multiple partners, the value is reduced accordingly. For every level-up your partners gain, a portion of the EXP used to level up is given to the host.

Note: There’s no limit to the number of women or men in the harem.

[Hatred:] The more hatred people feel around you, the greater your gains. You can receive up to 80% of the stats of those who hate you.

Note: I am not responsible for your problems.

[Duo:] You’ll have only one partner for life, but both of you will be system hosts. If system missions are completed and levels gained, all points will be doubled. If one dies, the other inherits the total stats and gains a 25-minute 3x stat buff for revenge.

Note: Only one partner will be accepted for life.

Choose.]

Eh... wait, what? So this isn’t one of those immutable systems?

[I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean. This was only allowed due to the system’s own previous decision—not the host’s.]

Seeing that answer, Darui took a moment before responding.

Hm... I think Harem would be the best long-term... but what happens if someone in the harem dies?

[Replace.]

...

Wasn’t that a bit cold?

[I don’t deal in feelings, host.]

...Fine, forget it. I think I’ll go with the Duo sub-system instead. Harem sounds great—until you think about compatibility. As for the Hatred one... well, I don’t want more trouble.

With the system understanding his choice, the screen blinked again and showed:

[Host has chosen Duo.]

The screen flickered again, and the status updated:

Name: Darui Lantches

Race: Human?

Level: 3

Strength: 17

Agility: 17

Dexterity: 15

Intelligence: 12

Points: 0

Sub-System: Duo

I guess that’s it...

Closing the status window and thinking,

Since I can’t sleep, I’ll go train my Qi outside...

Darui grabbed the sword beside the bed and walked out.

---

As morning broke, Khan noticed it and simply stopped writing his notes.

Hm... the night went by so fast...

Closing the notebook and returning it to the inventory, I stood up while reflecting on the notes.

I need to move the island. I have to test my body better—it might be a fusion of several versions, which is probably why I didn’t recognize it...

Seeing that I had way more to do, I focused on what I could deal with for now:

First, move the island toward the Azure Kingdom, over the sea.

Opening the island menu:

Island Interface:

Floating island: True

Island direction: Idle

Barrier: True

Emergency state: False

Island gates: 0

Desert containment field: True

Artificial sun: False

[...]

The problem now is figuring out the direction. We’ve only been using the sun to navigate... so that would be west...

Sighing, realizing there’s no point in worrying so much.

If I mess up, I just won’t do it again... move west.

Island direction: west

The island gave no sign of movement, so I just left it, trusting that it was moving.

Now there’s something I had forgotten—main office... that’s where the head maid stays and also my workplace. I need to check it. It’s been four days since I came here and I haven’t gone yet.

Leaving the room and now in the silent hallway, I walked.

With my steady footsteps, I arrived at the main office, located on the top floor of the lower castle.

In short, the castle has eight towers and one floating floor above with heavier security.

Entering through the door, I saw three stacks of papers on the main desk, which stood one step above the entry floor, a large window behind it.

To the side, the head maid, Krone, stood beside the desk, neatly dressed in a detailed maid outfit. She had dark brown hair and a calm face.

Looking around, there were two couches facing each other, wide enough for three people. In the corners, armchairs, and in the center, a glass table with some ornaments. Bookshelves lined the walls.

As I entered, Krone opened her eyes—green—and spoke calmly in a beautiful voice,

"Welcome, Master."

Hearing that gave me a small burst of energy.

At least that cures some of my confusion...

"Yes," I answered dryly, unfortunately.

I walked to the chair, and as soon as I sat down, I felt its softness and relaxed a bit.

Seeing that, Krone said,

"I have a letter from Lady Iris for you, Master."

Taking the letter from the inventory she opened at her side, she handed it over politely, and I took it with slight hesitation.

Hm... from the seal, it seems legit. But why a letter? Wouldn’t telepathy be easier?

Opening the letter, I could only think:

...A long letter...

Reading it all, it talked about the new world:

Qi would be the least lethal thing, due to its steep learning curve—so there were few users.

Magic could be considered almost like our skills, but it used unknown energy.

Traits were the real problem, since they were random and could result in dangerous abilities.

Qi and Magic don’t mix, but Traits can mix with either one.

Hmm... still, it sounds a bit like the system we were developing at the company, though I’ve never heard of the Lantches or Fermes, where Lucy lived...

The rest of the letter I didn’t care much about—it was about what to do with the women. I just contacted Iris telepathically and gave her permission to do as she pleased.

After finishing the letter, I stored it in a desk drawer.

Not really in the mood to put it in the inventory... it’s already a mess, and adding to it would just make it worse...

Krone, noticing the matter was over, asked,

"Would you like me to make some coffee, Master?"

Hm... I wouldn’t taste anything, but I’m curious if the effects would still work on me.

"Yes," I replied simply.

She walked to a counter and started preparing it. Meanwhile, I looked over the items on the desk.

There were three stacks, from smallest to largest, each with a transparent cover labeled: Important, Not Important, and Trivial.

Picking up an important paper, I read the beginning:

Gemstone trade:

2 copper bars for 1 iron.

4 iron bars for 1 gold...

I stopped and looked below—it listed the cities that wanted to trade like this.

Hm... so the market works through raw material trade here, but how long will that last? Everyone has a life now, so they also have ambitions...

Thinking more deeply, I reached a conclusion.

I might actually need to introduce currency. Otherwise, this could turn into chaos. Just reading this, I can already see ways to exploit it...

I sighed, having more work to think about, and the coffee came at just the right time.

Krone placed the cup beside me. I nodded,

"Thanks."

Krone gave a small bow and returned to her place beside the desk.

Taking the coffee... no taste, but I felt a slight energy.

Maybe that’s the small energy buff from coffee...

Then I picked up the papers and spent my morning reviewing documents.

When noon came, Krone spoke,

"Master, perhaps it’s time for a break."

Holding a paper, I looked at her.

"Hm... alright, I’ll be stepping out. File the papers I’ve reviewed, and send the unsigned ones back with my changes."

She gave a half-bow and said,

"As you wish, Master."

She stood straight again.

Placing the paper back on the desk, I got up and walked to the door.

Exiting and walking down the hallway, I reflected.

The papers were interesting—I got a better sense of the cities on the island and how they’re organized...

As I kept walking with various thoughts, I realized something I’d been neglecting.

I guess it’s time to deal with that...

Since the place was in Lilith’s territory—southeast, at the island’s edge—I contacted her.

’Lilith?’

’Yes~?’

Thinking it’d be better to talk in person, I asked,

’Where are you?’

’In my tower~.’

Hearing that, I remembered the fourth tower was hers and replied,

’I’m coming.’

That said, I made my way to her tower. Since it was within the castle, I didn’t need to go outside.

Arriving and climbing up, I knocked and entered.

The room was dark, but that wasn’t a problem for me.

Walking deeper into the room, I heard noises behind me.

Then, something soft hit my back—it didn’t hurt, just felt plush.

A voice whispered in my pointed ear,

"You know, it’s dangerous to enter a succubus’s room like this~"

Recognizing the whisper as Lilith’s, I simply asked,

"Is it really?"

Lilith let go of my neck and snapped her fingers, turning on the lights.

I turned around and saw a beautiful woman standing with arms crossed, her breasts slightly lifted by the pose. She said,

"Ara~, I thought I’d at least startle you a bit~, but as usual, you’re so cold~"

I just thought,

That’s what you think...

Seeing I said nothing, she jumped onto me again, wrapping her arms around my neck and pressing her chest against mine. She asked,

"Do you not feel anything for me anymore~?"

Knowing her personality well, I replied,

"That would be a lie... Want proof?"

Getting a bit more excited, she softly replied,

"I do~"

Hearing that, I started leaning toward her face. As I expected, she blushed.

Now blushing, she pulled away before the kiss could happen.

Turning away, she said,

"That was really mean of you, Khan~"

I knew that would happen. She acts like this, but when it’s time to actually do something, she always backs off...

Watching her back, I replied,

"I’m not the one who started it..."

Her mature image shattered. She turned around with puffed cheeks and said,

"Not fair! You’re always so dry like that—so unfair!"

What does that even mean...?

I just asked myself silently—but honestly, I was enjoying it.

After hearing a bit of her whining, I said,

"I think I should start explaining why I came here."

She returned to a serious tone and said,

"Of course~, but can we sit first?"

Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I replied,

"Sure."

We sat across from each other. Lilith crossed her legs, showing off her thick thighs.

I, on the other hand, just leaned back in the chair, arms resting, staring at her.

With both of us comfortable in our positions, I spoke,

"Let me be direct. I want to visit the desert."
