Chapter 77: A Door Opens, A Trap Closes

Eryx rushed out of the mansion, heading straight for his car. The moment he slipped into the driver’s seat, he dialed Callum’s number without hesitation.

"Inform the press," he ordered the second the call connected. "Tell them I’m married."

There was a brief pause on the other end before Callum spoke, his tone laced with disbelief. "Are you sure, sir?"

Eryx’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. "Just do it. As soon as possible."

Callum hesitated for a moment before asking carefully, "Shall I include any details about your wife?"

Eryx’s gaze darkened as he stared ahead. "No. Leave out the details. Just a brief introduction, like... she’s an ordinary netizen. Nothing more."

Callum hesitated before speaking again. "But sir, the press will start digging. Should we at least include her age or something to control the speculation?"

Eryx considered it for a moment, then said, "Twenty-three. That’s all they need to know."

Callum, ever the professional, didn’t question further. "Understood. I’ll make the announcement within the hour."

Eryx ended the call and exhaled sharply, gripping the steering wheel. Starting the car, he sped off, his mind racing with countless thoughts. But for now, his priority was clear, he needed to find Lunara.

Just then, his phone rang. Seeing Naomi’s name on the screen, he picked up immediately.

"I put my friendship on the line just to help you," she said, her voice tense. "But I don’t want this to end badly, Eryx."

He stayed silent, sensing she had more to say.

"She’s at the Halverson Hotel," Naomi finally admitted. "And don’t tell her I told you."

"Thanks." His tone was flat, but he really meant it.

Before Naomi could respond, he ended the call.

Tossing his phone onto the passenger seat, Eryx pressed harder on the gas, his destination now set. Halverson Hotel.

Eryx strode into the Halverson Hotel, his sharp gaze sweeping across the lobby before he approached the receptionist.

A light small formed on his lips as he approached the reception desk. "My wife checked in earlier, but I forgot the room number. I can’t reach her... her phone’s probably dead."

The receptionist gave him a professional smile, but there was a hint of caution in her eyes. "I’m sorry, sir, but for security reasons, we can’t disclose guest room numbers."

Eryx exhaled silently, already expecting resistance. Without a word, he reached into his wallet and pulled out a sleek black name card, sliding it across the counter. His name, Eryx Cyrus Grantham, was embossed in silver lettering.

The receptionist’s eyes flickered with recognition. Her posture shifted slightly, polite but more attentive.

"I understand the policy," Eryx said smoothly. "But my wife checked in here, and I couldn’t reach her. I don’t want to cause a scene, but I’d appreciate your assistance."

The woman hesitated, glancing between the card and him. "I’ll see what I can do, sir. But first, may I have your wife’s name?"

"Lunara. Lunara Hayes."

The receptionist’s brow arched slightly, unconsciously reacting to the name. Eryx caught the small change in her expression and forced a faint, awkward smile. "She said her last name is beautiful, so she insisted on keeping it."

The receptionist nodded, then turned to her phone. "Please give me a moment, Mr. Grantham."

She made a quick call, speaking in hushed tones. A moment later, she hung up and gave a small nod. "I’m sorry, sir. I understand your concern, but we have strict policies in place for guest privacy. Do you have any proof that you’re her husband?"

Eryx forced a smile, though his patience was running thin. "I wouldn’t be here wasting my time if I weren’t."

"I understand, but—"

He tapped his business card on the counter and looked at the receptionist, losing his calm demeanor. "Eryx Cyrus Grantham." His voice carried weight, his name one that opened doors, literally and figuratively. "Isn’t this enough? Do you really think I would lie about who I am?"

The receptionist’s brows furrowed slightly, recognition flashing in her eyes, but she remained professional. "I do recognize your name, sir, but that doesn’t confirm your relationship with Miss Hayes."

He exhaled slowly, trying to suppress his irritation. "She booked the room under her name, didn’t she?"

The receptionist hesitated. "I can’t confirm that either."

Eryx’s fingers tapped the counter, his patience thinning. "Then what do you need?"

She glanced at his business card again before looking back at him. "Do you have any identification that connects you to her? A call, a message, anything?"

Eryx clenched his jaw. Their message conversation? Nothing more than his one-sided messages that she never replied to. But just as he was about to come up with another argument, an idea struck him.

"She’s my wife," he repeated, this time lowering his voice just enough to make the receptionist lean in slightly. "If you won’t let me up, then perhaps you should call her room and tell her I’m here."

As he grew more anxious, his phone continued buzzing, with Callum’s name flashing on the screen.

Eryx clenched his jaw but ignored the calls. He needed to settle this first.

The receptionist paused, then sighed, finally relenting. "I suppose I can make a call for you." She picked up the phone and dialed a number.

Eryx waited, frustration bubbling up inside him as he watched her listen to the ringing. After a few moments, she hung up and looked back at him. "She’s not answering."

"Which proves my point," Eryx said coolly. "I’m not here to waste time. I need to make sure she’s alright."

The receptionist gave him a reluctant nod. "Alright, sir. I’ll have someone escort you."

A few minutes later, Eryx stepped off the elevator and followed the staff member to the 21st floor. They stopped in front of a door, and the staff member gestured toward it. "This is the room, sir."

Eryx gave a curt nod. "Thanks."

Once alone, he pressed the doorbell, his impatience growing.

His phone buzzed again. Another call from Callum. Eryx exhaled sharply but finally decided to pick up the call, irritation heavy in his tone. "What?"

"Sir," Callum began, urgency in his voice. "The press just released a statement from Our group."

Eryx’s brow furrowed. "And?"

"Your grandmother announced your engagement."

Eryx’s blood ran cold.

Just as the words registered, the door in front of him clicked open. Lunara stood there, holding her phone and staring at him in hatred.
