My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 59: A New Beginning

Chapter 59: A New Beginning

Lunara didn’t respond right away. The room felt heavier, filled with words left unsaid. She traced the edge of the blanket with her fingers, buying time, before finally exhaling.

"I don’t know," she admitted, her voice softer than before. "Maybe I just don’t trust you to mean it."

Eryx ran a hand down his face, exhaling slowly. He had expected this. Maybe even deserved it. But hearing her say it out loud still stung in a way he wasn’t prepared for.

"I don’t blame you," he admitted, leaning back slightly. "I wouldn’t trust me either."

The words left his mouth before he could stop them, and for a moment, he wasn’t sure why he even said them. He wasn’t here to chase after her, wasn’t here to beg for trust he had already shattered. So why was he still sitting here, losing sleep over her silence?

Lunara’s fingers stilled against the blanket, but she didn’t lift her gaze. He could tell she was weighing his words, searching for meaning in them.

"Can you..." He paused, hesitating the words that he was trying to say, "can you give me one last chance? I need to figure out one thing and our relationship, I am sure, I broke your trust already but the two years that I had messed up, I found like I need to fix it."

Lunara’s heart wavered. She wanted to hold on to her anger, to remind herself of every reason she shouldn’t trust him. But as she sat there, looking at him, his tired eyes, the way his brows pinched slightly like he was bracing for rejection, something inside her softened.

She hated that he still had this effect on her. That despite everything, a part of her wanted to believe him.

Her fingers curled into the blanket, gripping it like it could hold her. "And if I say no?" she asked, testing him, testing herself.

He bobbed his head, trying to embrace himself with whatever answer he received, "I guess I will wait?"

Lunara arched her eyebrow, "Wait? Hmm..." She paused, "Can I ask you something?"

Eryx exhaled slowly, his fingers tapping against his thigh. "Go ahead."

Lunara studied him for a moment, debating whether she wanted to know the answer. Then, with a quiet breath, she asked, "Why now?"

He frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

She tilted her head, her voice quieter this time. "Why are you trying now? After everything?"

Eryx’s lips pressed into a thin line. He took a few seconds to process the question, but before he could answer, Lunara let out a soft chuckle.

"Can I ask one more question?" She gave him a light smile when he nodded. "If I were the Lunara from two years ago, short hair, baggy jeans, big glasses, and sometimes covered in thick makeup... Would you still be interested in me?"

Eryx’s brows furrowed slightly, his gaze steady on her. He didn’t answer right away, as if carefully choosing his words.

"That’s not fair," he finally said, his tone quieter than before.

Lunara’s smile didn’t waver, but something in her eyes dimmed. "Why not?"

"Because you’re acting like I only see what’s on the surface." He exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "But if you really want an answer...yes."

She blinked, caught off guard. "Yes?"

"Yes," he repeated, leaning forward slightly. "You think I didn’t notice you back then? Maybe I didn’t act like it, maybe I was too much of an idiot to admit it, but don’t assume I only started caring now."

Lunara’s grip on the blanket loosened, but her eyes remained narrowed, filled with doubt. She wanted to believe him, but after everything, could it really be that simple?

"Lying is easy, isn’t it?" she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "How about we test it first?"

Eryx’s frown deepened. "What do you mean by ’test it’?"

"I mean," she said, tilting her head slightly, "can you live with a Lunara who has short hair, a boyish fashion style, and thick, dark makeup?"

Eryx ran a hand down on his face, taking a deep full breath. "Are you saying you are going to cut your hair? Just to prove that I did it because of your current appearance?"

Lunara shrugged, her expression unreadable. "Would that be a problem?"

Eryx let out a slow breath, his fingers pressing against his temple. "That’s not the point," he muttered. "Do you seriously believe that I’m only here because of how you look now?"

She tilted her head, studying him. "Aren’t you?"

His jaw tightened. "If that’s what you really believe, then..." He paused, closing his eyes for a few seconds before exhaling sharply. "Go ahead and cut your hair. If that’s what it takes to prove I’m not here just because of—" he gestured toward her face, "your beautiful face, then fine. Anyway, I don’t think I have anything to lose, right?"

Lunara’s lips parted slightly, caught off guard by his answer. She had expected hesitation, maybe even frustration, but not this level of resolve. He wasn’t trying to convince her with empty words, he was challenging her.

She let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head. "You say that now, but let’s see if you’ll still feel the same once I actually do it."

Eryx held her gaze, unwavering. "Try me." Then he walked closer to the bed, "Or perhaps you are the one who feels hesitant?" A very faint smirk appeared on his lips.

Lunara scoffed, tilting her chin up. "Hesitant? Hardly."

Eryx’s smirk deepened as he took another step closer, his presence looming over her. "Acting tough when you look this adorable." His voice was softer now, and when their eyes met, his expression held something unreadable. "I don’t care how you look, as long as I can stay by your side every day now. And I promise... I’ll protect you the way a husband should."

Lunara’s breath hitched, warmth rushing to her cheeks. She blinked, caught off guard by his sudden sincerity. "What was that? A love letter out of nowhere?"
