Chapter 55: Stolen Card
Chapter 55: Stolen Card
Lunara followed Naomi into the boutique, feeling slightly out of place among the racks of expensive clothing. She barely had time to take in her surroundings when a familiar, unpleasant voice reached her ears.
"Well, well. Look who’s here."
Lunara turned and saw Eloise standing near a mirror, holding a dress against herself. Her lips curled into a smirk.
"You’re really moving up in life, huh?" Eloise said, eyeing Lunara from head to toe. "Did you finally realize that dating rich is the way to go?"
Lunara blinked. "What?"
Eloise turned and stepped closer, "Don’t play dumb, I know you tried to trick Eryx Grantham, right?" She then sneered, "Too pity, he is not interested in you, me and dad already met him at his office the other day."
Naomi raised an eyebrow. "Wait, you met Eryx?" She let out a small laugh. "And he entertained you?"
Eloise crossed her arms. "Of course! Unlike some people, I don’t need to chase after rich men... They come to me." She smirked at Lunara. "You should’ve seen the way he looked at me."
Lunara frowned slightly but said nothing.
Naomi, on the other hand, tilted her head. "Huh... That’s weird."
"What is?" Eloise narrowed her eyes.
Naomi pretended to think. "Well, it’s just funny because, you know... I see my brother almost every day, and I don’t remember him mentioning anything about you."
Eloise’s smirk faltered. "B-brother?"
Naomi grinned. "Oops. Did I forget to introduce myself? Naomi Grantham. Eryx’s little sister." She batted her lashes. "Nice to meet you."
Eloise’s expression froze in place.
Lunara bit the inside of her cheek, barely holding back a laugh.
Naomi leaned in slightly. "So, tell me again... how did Eryx look at you?"
Eloise frowned before pulling out her phone from her handbag. After scrolling for a moment, she shoved the screen in front of them. "See this?"
Naomi and Lunara glanced at the screen. It was a picture of Eryx sitting in his office chair, his expression as cold and unreadable as ever.
Naomi raised an eyebrow. "Wait... Are you saying this picture is proof? And this is how he looked at you?" She let out a puff of air, nearly choking on her laughter.
Lunara, who had spent less time around Eryx, also already learnt that was just his usual expression.
Eloise crossed her arms. "He agreed to meet me, didn’t he? That alone says something."
"So..." Naomi crossed her arms, "You are saying this picture that you probably took secretly was when you met him, right?"
Eloise scoffed. "Obviously. What else would it be?"
Naomi tilted her head. "Well, considering he looks exactly like that 24/7, I wouldn’t be so sure." She leaned in slightly. "Tell me, was this before or after he asked you to leave?"
Eloise’s expression faltered for a split second before she flipped her hair. "Believe what you want. The point is, he met me, and he didn’t meet you, Lunara."
Lunara, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. "I never said I wanted to meet him."
Eloise let out a dry laugh. "Oh, please. Everyone knows what you’re after."
Naomi, unimpressed, sighed. "Wow, you really have a wild imagination. Maybe you should write a novel instead."
Eloise rolled her eyes and turned to the cashier. "Just ring up my dress already."
The cashier nodded and swiped Eloise’s card.
Beep.
"I’m sorry, ma’am. This card has been declined."
The air shifted. Naomi’s lips twitched upward as she exchanged a glance with Lunara.
Eloise stiffened. "What? That’s impossible. Try it again."
The cashier did, but the result didn’t change. "It’s still declined. Do you have another card?"
Eloise’s hands trembled slightly as she pulled out another one and practically threw it at the cashier.
Beep.
"I’m sorry, ma’am. This one has declined as well."
Naomi let out a soft gasp, placing a hand over her chest. "No way..." she leaned closer and suddenly narrowed her eyes, "Wait, that card looks familiar. Where did you get it?"
Eloise took the black card back and quickly wanted to put it inside her purse, "Why? None of your business."
Naomi held onto Eloise’s hand, stopping her from hiding the card, "It is my business because that card has my family signature. Did you steal it?" Naomi’s eyes furrowed, already started judging.
Panicked, Eloise clasped the card into her palm, "I–I did not, my father gave it to me. Since you said it is your family’s signature card, probably because your brother gave it to him as a token of appreciation." She let out a quiet exhalation, glad she came out with that idea despite being nervous.
Naomi raised an eyebrow. "A token of appreciation? My brother?" She folded her arms. "Eryx doesn’t give out gifts, especially not that kind of gift."
Eloise forced a laugh. "Well, maybe he made an exception, since he is interested in me, you know."
Naomi scoffed. "Interested in you?" She tilted her head. "That’s funny. Lunara..." She shifted her eyes to Lunara, "Is that the card you said your father stole from you?"
Lunara’s eyes fell on the black card in Eloise’s hand, and her breath hitched. It did look familiar. She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "It looks just like mine..."
Naomi let out a low chuckle. "Well, well, what a coincidence." She turned back to Eloise. "You were so busy bragging, yet you didn’t even realize you were flaunting stolen money."
Eloise’s grip on her purse tightened. "It’s not stolen! My father gave it to me!"
Naomi raised an eyebrow. "Right. And where exactly did he get it?"
Eloise stammered, "He—he got it from Eryx! As a token of appreciation!"
Naomi’s lips curled into an amused smirk. "Oh? That’s interesting. Because I’m his sister, and I know for a fact that my brother doesn’t hand out gifts to a complete stranger, especially not black cards."
"Up to you to believe it or not," Eloise said, her breath growing heavier as anxiety crept in.
Naomi took a step back, crossing her arms. "Then, the only solution is to call my brother here."
