Chapter 43: Seraphine Wilson
Chapter 43: Seraphine Wilson
Eryx’s fingers tapped impatiently against his desk as he stared at the call screen. The abrupt way Lunara had ended the call left a bad feeling in his chest. He exhaled sharply before pressing a button on his intercom.
"Callum, check Lunara’s current location."
"Yes, sir," Callum’s voice responded immediately.
Eryx leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing. He had an important meeting with a high-profile client in a few minutes, one that couldn’t be delayed. But the unsettling feeling gnawed at him.
Still, his mind kept drifting back to Lunara. The way she had suddenly ended the call, the quiet strain in her voice, it didn’t sit right with him.
Forcing himself to focus, he pushed through the hour-long discussion, though every passing minute felt like a waste of time. The moment the meeting concluded, he didn’t linger. Without a second thought, he grabbed his coat and strode out of the office.
"Where did you say she is currently?" He asked, striding his long legs to his car.
"The studio, sir." Callum rushed to catch up with Eryx.
Eryx clicked his tongue in impatience, unlocking his car with a sharp motion. "Did you check who she’s with?"
Callum nodded. "Yes, apparently Madam asked the staff to arrange a pre-shoot for the campaign to help her fami—"
"Cut it short! You’re not answering my question!" Eryx snapped.
Callum cleared his throat, quickly correcting himself. "She’s with your mother’s team, sir."
"Drive me there."
At the studio, Lunara sat alone in the waiting area, her hands gripping the edge of her seat. Regina had left for an urgent meeting, and without her presence, Lunara felt small.
The whispers from earlier still echoed in her mind.
Her chest tightened. She knew she lacked experience. Nope, actually, she had zero experience but hearing it put so bluntly made her stomach churn. She stared at the floor, pressing her lips together to stop them from trembling.
Regina had told her she deserved this, that she had potential, but was that really true? Or maybe Eryx and Naomi were right? Was there a hidden agenda behind Regina’s offer?
"Miss Lunara," the makeup artist called her, "I need to do your makeup."
Lunara snapped out of her thoughts and forced a small smile. "Ah, yes... coming."
She sat down in front of the mirror, but the uneasiness in her chest didn’t fade.
The makeup artist carefully applied foundation to Lunara’s face, her hands gentle yet precise. "Your skin is really nice," she commented, trying to make small talk.
Lunara smiled faintly. "Thank you."
As the artist moved on to her eyes, blending soft shades onto her lids, Lunara tried to relax. But the murmurs around the room made it impossible.
Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the entrance.
"Seraphine? Are you serious?" one of the staff members exclaimed, practically bouncing in excitement.
"Yes! I just saw her outside!" another voice chimed in. "I need to get a picture with her!"
A wave of chatter filled the room as more staff members rushed toward the entrance, eager to catch a glimpse of the famous model.
Lunara’s grip tightened on the edge of the makeup chair. Worrying that there might be another series of talking behind her back.
"To be honest," The makeup artist started again, "I kind of agree with the chairman." She smiled, looking at Lunara inside the mirror, "You suit the campaign this time."
Lunara blinked, surprised by the sudden compliment. She met the makeup artist’s eyes in the mirror, trying to gauge if she was just being polite.
"You really think so?" she asked, her voice quieter than she intended.
The makeup artist nodded as she dusted a soft blush onto Lunara’s cheeks. "Yes. Seraphine is amazing, no doubt. But the concept this time... it needs someone fresh. Someone with your kind of look."
Lunara pressed her lips together, unsure how to respond. Just earlier, she had heard whispers doubting her, and now someone was telling her she was the right choice.
Before she could say anything, more excited chatter filled the studio as someone announced, "She’s coming inside!"
"Do you really think so?"
A voice from the back made both Lunara and the makeup artist turn.
Seraphine stood at the entrance, smiling. Stepping closer, she extended her hand. "Nice to meet you. I’m Seraphine Wilson."
Lunara immediately stood up and shook her hand, a genuine smile forming on her lips. "N-nice to meet you too," she said, her voice slightly timid as she stood before Seraphine.
Seraphine was tall compared to Lunara, and with the added height of her heels, Lunara certainly felt like a dwarf beside her.
"Hmm..." Seraphine tilted her head slightly. "I guess you’re right," she said, still smiling as she glanced at the makeup artist. "She does have a fresh look."
The makeup artist beamed. "Right? She has that natural charm that fits this campaign perfectly."
Lunara sat still, unsure how to respond. Seraphine’s presence was overwhelming not because she was unkind, but because she carried an effortless confidence that made Lunara feel even more out of place.
Then, to her surprise, Seraphine reached out and lightly brushed a strand of hair away from Lunara’s face, tucking it behind her ear. "You’ll do fine," she murmured, her gaze lingering as if assessing her. "And don’t worry about anything. I guessed they made the decision after checking through a lot of things and looking at you, I get it now."
Lunara’s lips parted, hesitating slightly. "But Miss Seraphine, I’m sorry if you ever felt..." She trailed off, unsure how to put her feelings into words.
Seraphine raised an eyebrow, waiting. When Lunara didn’t continue, she chuckled softly. "Felt what? Upset? Cheated? Like I was replaced?" She shook her head. "Don’t be. That’s just how this industry works."
As she spoke, she casually raised her right hand, waving it in a lighthearted gesture. But from an outsider’s perspective, especially from Eryx, who had just arrived at the studio, it looked like she was about to slap Lunara from behind.
"What do you think you’re doing?"
