My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 40: Why Can’t He Get Her Out of His Head?

Chapter 40: Why Can’t He Get Her Out of His Head?

Naomi rubbed her eyes as she opened the door. "What is it?" she yawned, trying to act like she had just woken up.

"Where is she?" Eryx asked, craning his head to look inside the room.

Naomi yawned again, exaggerating it this time. "Ahh... she’s already asleep. What do you want?"

"Here, I got her a new phone."

Naomi raised a brow, crossing her arms. "Since when did you start acting so clingy? You never cared about women before."

Eryx remained unfazed, holding out the phone. "I don’t see the issue in getting my wife a new phone."

Naomi squinted at him. "When did you even get this?"

"Callum just sent it earlier," he replied casually, his eyes still fixed on Lunara, who was lying on the bed.

Naomi followed his gaze and sighed. "You’re acting weird."

"What?" He frowned, his cold expression unchanged.

"See, this is the Eryx I know. Cold, arrogant, a total jerk—"

"Are you insulting me?" He narrowed his eyes.

Naomi smirked. "Just stating facts. There must be something, how can you be that interested in her after just meeting again only in a week? You acted like you can’t even part away from her. This is not Eryx Cyrus that I know."

Eryx’s jaw tightened, but he remained silent. His gaze flickered toward Lunara, who was still asleep, her breathing steady.

Naomi crossed her arms. "See? You’re not even denying it."

He let out a low scoff. "Think whatever you want."

Naomi raised a brow. "Oh, I will. And I’m thinking... maybe you’re scared."

Eryx turned to her, his expression unreadable. "Scared?"

"Yeah." She tilted her head. "You’ve never cared about a woman before, so why now? Why her? You didn’t even act like this when you were with Seraphine before."

Eryx didn’t answer, Seraphine’s name didn’t even bother him anymore. Instead, he reached for the door handle and stepped out without another word.

Naomi watched him leave and sighed. "Weirder and weirder." She glanced down at the phone he had left behind before shaking her head. "What are you really up to, Eryx?"

As Naomi tried to close the door, it suddenly stopped. Eryx’s hand halted it from shutting completely. "You said she’s already asleep, right?"

Naomi hesitated before nodding. "Yes..."

"Then I think it won’t be a problem if I carry her and put her to sleep inside my room, right?"

Naomi panicked internally, but before she could think of a way to stop him, Eryx stepped inside, his gaze locked onto Lunara’s sleeping form.

Lunara, who had been faking her sleep, felt a chill run down her spine. ’No way... he’s not actually going to—’

Eryx took another step closer, reaching for the blanket. "Since she’s already asleep, she won’t even notice."

Naomi quickly moved in front of him. "Okay, okay! Enough with the brute act! She’s comfortable here, so let her be."

Lunara struggled to keep her breathing steady, her mind racing. ’If he takes me now, I’m doomed!’

Eryx tilted his head, eyeing Naomi suspiciously. "You’re acting suspicious."

Naomi crossed her arms. "Oh, please! I just don’t want to deal with her wrath when she wakes up and finds herself in your bed. You know how dramatic she is."

Eryx leaned forward while moving his hand under Lunara’s body. "Then I’ll take the risk."

Naomi’s breath hitched as she panicked. "You said you—you..." She was out of excuses, stuttering as her words completely failed her under Eryx’s cold glare.

Scooping Lunara up, Eryx adjusted his grip and stood straight.

She leaned in, tiptoeing to whisper near his ear, "Don’t tell me... after all these years of self-control, you’re finally losing it?"

Eryx shot her a glare. "Shut up."

Naomi raised her hands in surrender, but her smirk didn’t fade. "I mean, what else am I supposed to think? You’re acting like a guy who hasn’t—"

"Finish that sentence, and I’ll throw you out."

Naomi chuckled, stepping back. "Fine, fine. But seriously, Eryx, what’s going on with you?"

Eryx didn’t answer. Instead, he adjusted Lunara in his arms and walked out, leaving Naomi staring after him, more confused than ever.

"Tsk, tsk... I’m sorry, best friend. I hope you survive the cold night." She closed her eyes and pressed her lips together, dramatically praying for Lunara’s survival.

Lunara internally screamed as she felt Eryx pushed the door open with his foot and stepped inside, ’This isn’t happening. This is NOT happening!’

Her body remained limp in Eryx’s arms, but her mind was in full-blown panic mode. She wanted to kick, to push him away, to bolt out of the room, anything but let this man carry her off like some helpless damsel. But if she moved now, he’d know she was awake, and that would be even worse.

Eryx walked with steady, deliberate steps, each one making Lunara’s anxiety spike. The cool air in his room sent a shiver down her spine, but she forced herself to stay still.

He reached the bed and slowly lowered her down, his touch unexpectedly gentle as he adjusted the blanket over her.

Lunara’s heartbeat pounded in her ears. ’Okay... okay... just stay still. Maybe he’ll leave. Maybe he—’

The bed dipped.

Her breath hitched.

’Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me.’

Eryx didn’t move away. Instead, he sat there, silent, unmoving. The weight of his presence alone was suffocating.

Lunara fought the urge to clench her fists. What was he doing? Watching her? Thinking?

Then, after what felt like an eternity, he exhaled a slow, quiet breath, heavy with something she couldn’t quite place.

’Why won’t he just go?’

But deep down, an even scarier question whispered in her mind.

’Why does it feel like he won’t?’

Just as the silence stretched unbearably, Lunara shifted slightly, rustling the sheets as if adjusting in her sleep. She turned her face away from him, hoping it would make him lose interest and leave.

As she shifted, the blanket slipped down, exposing her shoulder. Eryx instinctively reached out, pulling it back up to cover her. His fingers lingered for a second before he let out a quiet sigh.

He stared at her peaceful face, his brows furrowing. Then, almost to himself, he murmured, "Why can’t I get you out of my head? And why do I feel anxious when you’re not by my side?"
