My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 200: The Reason That Break Them Apart

Chapter 200: The Reason That Break Them Apart

Eryx’s eyes caught a flash of a kid rushing out of the restaurant. His body tensed, already halfway out of his seat, ready to dash after him.

But Lunara grabbed his arm.

"No," she said firmly.

Her hand was steady despite the faint tremble in her fingers. She reached up, fixing his sunglasses back onto his face and tugging his cap lower to shield him from attention. Then she laced her fingers through his and gave his hand a gentle squeeze.

"Let’s go back home."

Eryx looked down at her and at the dark stain on her shoulder, the faint scent of sulfur still clinging to her clothes, and the way she held herself together like she wasn’t one breath away from breaking.

His jaw clenched.

He didn’t say anything. Just nodded once.

They walked out of the restaurant, all eyes tracking them, but not a single word was exchanged. Whatever needed to be said would happen later, somewhere safe.

But the moment they stepped outside, they stopped cold.

A man leaned casually against a black car, one hand in his pocket, the other gripping a boy by the collar. The kid looked terrified, his shoes scuffed like he’d been running.

The man smiled.

"Lunara," he greeted sweetly, as if they hadn’t just walked out of a restaurant under a storm of humiliation. "Did you get home safe the other day?"

Eryx instantly pulled Lunara behind him, his body moving before his mind caught up. His hand rested lightly against her hip in a protective gesture, firm and unshakable.

His eyes locked onto the man, gaze cold and cutting. "What do you want?"

The man raised his hands as if in surrender, his smile never fading. "Easy. Just being polite."

Lunara peeked from behind Eryx, her eyes narrowing as she recognized the man. "Adam."

Adam chuckled. "You still remember me. I’m touched."

Adam walked toward them, dragging the boy along by the collar. The boy looked like he was around twelve or thirteen years old, his limbs thin and his frame small, like he hadn’t eaten properly in days. His cheeks were hollow, and his eyes darted between the adults with a mixture of fear and defiance.

"I found him sprinting through the alley behind the restaurant," Adam said casually, like he was commenting on the weather. "Carrying a carton of rotten eggs like he was on a mission."

Lunara’s eyes flickered to the boy, taking in the bruises on his wrist where Adam gripped him too tightly. Her expression softened, just slightly.

"Let him go," she said, her voice low.

Adam ignored her and kept his gaze on Eryx, a smirk pulling at his lips. "What are the odds? I catch this little rat mid-throw, and it turns out the target is someone I actually know."

Eryx’s eyes were still locked on Adam’s hand. "Let him go, you are hurting him."

Adam scoffed. "Oh, that’s rich, coming from you. You hurt me worse, and you didn’t seem to care at all."

With a dramatic sigh, Adam finally released the boy’s collar. The kid stumbled forward, barely catching himself before he fell.

"There," Adam said, holding up both hands in mock surrender. "Happy now?" He brushed his hands together like he was dusting off dirt that wasn’t there. "You should ask him who told him to do it... before he runs off again."

The boy immediately backed away from all of them, his eyes locked warily on Adam, like he expected another blow.

Lunara crouched slightly, her voice soft. "What’s your name?"

The boy didn’t answer. He looked like he wanted to run but didn’t have the strength to make it far.

Eryx stepped in front of Lunara protectively, his glare returning to Adam. "Are you following us now?"

Adam let out a sharp laugh. "Don’t flatter yourself. I was just in the area. Saw something interesting and thought... why not say hello?"

"You’re not welcome," Eryx said coldly.

Adam clicked his tongue, shaking his head. "Tsk. A good deed clearly goes unappreciated these days. I drag some street rat out of trouble, and all I get is suspicion and glares. Lovely."

His gaze flicked to Lunara again, lingering longer than Eryx liked.

"Still as lovely as ever," Adam added smoothly, as if it were a compliment.

"What do you want?" Eryx’s sharp stare was practically a blade, his tone colder than the night air.

Adam held up his hands, that same mocking grin tugging at the corner of his lips. "What? Don’t pin this on me. I didn’t know the kid at all."

He glanced down at the boy, who was now clinging silently to Lunara’s side.

"You really should be more careful with the people around you," Adam continued, tilting his head mockingly. "Though I’ll admit, you’re still pretty good at keeping your distance from everyone. Cold. Controlled. Always acting like you’ve got everything figured out."

His voice hardened just slightly as he stepped forward again, eyes narrowing.

"But some things never change, huh? Still as dumb as before. That’s why we lost the company."

Eryx’s fists clenched at his sides, but he didn’t move. His jaw was tight, the muscle ticking as he stared at Adam without blinking.

"You know something?" Eryx asked quietly.

Adam gave a dry laugh. "Oh, I know a lot of things. Like how the company we built from scratch didn’t just collapse because of bad timing or poor luck."

He took a step closer, dragging out his words. "It collapsed because someone made sure it would."

Eryx’s gaze sharpened. "You’re talking about my grandmother?"

Adam raised an eyebrow. "Ah, so you finally figured that out. I was wondering how long it would take."

Eryx’s voice dropped. "Why didn’t you tell me back then?"

"Because I thought you were in on it," Adam snapped, the smile fading from his face for the first time. "You disappeared. One day we’re bleeding out trying to keep things afloat, and the next, you’re suddenly back in your family’s good graces. Sitting in their boardroom like nothing happened."

Eryx flinched, just slightly. "That wasn’t what it looked like."

Adam let out a sharp laugh. "Isn’t that always the excuse?"

"Is this supposed to be a business reunion?" Lunara cut in, her voice dry. "Because I don’t think me or this boy want to stand here listening to you two argue like kids on a sidewalk."

Her words dropped like a stone between them, silencing both men instantly.
