My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 19: Over My Dead Body

Chapter 19: Over My Dead Body

The meeting room, heavy with tension, broke into an unexpected sound of Eryx’s low, amused laughter.

"I wonder..." His sharp gaze locked onto Lunara, who stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock. It was clear she hadn’t expected to see him here.

"I always wondered why it was so hard to find her..." Eryx’s lips curled into a faint, knowing smile. "Guess I know why now."

He stood up slowly, the room’s atmosphere growing more charged with every step he took. Then his eyes flicked to Regina, his tone turning cool and accusing.

"Did you send her to me that night?"

Regina crossed her arms as she leaned on her seat, there was a slight hint of confusion on her face, "Which night?"

Eryx’s eyes darkened, his patience thinning. "Don’t play games with me."

Regina raised a perfectly shaped brow, her arms still crossed. "I’m not. You’ll have to be more specific, dear. I’m afraid I don’t keep track of all your... nights."

The implication hung heavy in the air, but Eryx didn’t rise to the bait. Instead, his gaze shifted back to Lunara. She hadn’t moved an inch, her fingers curled tightly around the strap of her bag as if it was the only thing anchoring her.

"You," he said softly, though there was a dangerous edge beneath the calm, "When did you plot this?" His sharp eyes bore into hers, unrelenting and cold.

Lunara’s lips parted, but no words came out. The intensity of his accusation stole whatever answer she might have given, leaving her stunned and silent.

Regina stood up, her expression calm. "Can you all leave us for now?" Her voice was light, almost amused, as if the tension crackling in the room didn’t exist.

The staff exchanged wary glances but knew better than to question her. Chairs scraped against the polished floor as they filed out quickly.

"And remember," Regina added just before the last person exited, her tone sweet but commanding, "Proceed with the contract for her."

The door clicked shut behind them, sealing the room in a heavy, charged silence.

Eryx’s jaw tightened. "So it’s true." His eyes never left Lunara. "You’re in on this. Just how far are you willing to go?"

Lunara finally found her voice, though it was shaky. "I—I don’t even know what you’re talking about!"

Regina’s smile widened as she settled comfortably into her chair. "Oh, this is getting interesting. Do you know each other?"

Eryx’s jaw tightened. His eyes never left Lunara. "Not as well as she’d like me to believe," he said coldly.

Lunara’s face paled. "That’s not true! I—"

Regina raised a hand, cutting her off. "Now, now. No need to get so defensive, dear. I just asked a simple question." Her eyes sparkled with amusement. "So... Do you?"

Eryx crossed his arms, his voice low and dangerous. "We’ve met. Once."

Regina’s brows lifted. "Oh? And was it... memorable?"

Lunara’s heart pounded. "This isn’t...this has nothing to do with any plan!" she blurted out, her voice shaking. "I didn’t even know what was really happening here!"

Regina tapped a finger against her chin, clearly enjoying the tension. "Fascinating. Then I suppose it’s just fate, isn’t it?"

Eryx’s eyes narrowed. "Fate has nothing to do with it. What exactly are you playing at, Mom?"

Regina only smiled. "Why, I’m just giving my company the perfect face for our campaign. Is that so hard to believe?"

The room went silent again.

Eryx sneered, "I’ve been your son for damn thirty years... I know when you’re up to something."

Regina clicked her tongue, amused. "You should count the ten months I carried you, darling. That’s part of the deal."

Eryx rolled his eyes. "Oh, right. I’m sure you started plotting even then."

Lunara stood frozen, watching their exchange like she’d stumbled into something she shouldn’t have been part of. "Madam, I’ll leave now. About the job you mentioned... I’m sorry, but I don’t think I want to take it."

She paused for a moment, then shifted her gaze to Eryx. "And Mr. Eryx Grantham, I’m sorry for being so clueless. I didn’t even notice the same family name before. And just to clear up any misunderstanding... no, nothing was planned. Cliché, I know, but I never intended to meet you, and whatever you’re thinking about me... it’s not true."

She turned toward the door, her hand already reaching for the handle when Regina’s voice stopped her.

"Lunara, dear," Regina said sweetly, "are you sure you want to refuse this opportunity? I wouldn’t want you to regret it later."

Lunara hesitated, her back still turned. "With all due respect, Madam... I think I’ll take my chances."

Eryx watched her closely, his eyes narrowing as she finally walked out without looking back.

The door clicked shut behind her, and the room stayed silent until Eryx spoke again. "So that’s your perfect face for the campaign?" His voice was cold. "You always surprise me, mom. When did you meet her?"

Regina shrugged her shoulders, "By pure luck?"

Eryx’s eyes narrowed. "I don’t believe in your kind of luck."

Regina just smiled, completely unbothered. "Well, you’ll have to, because that’s exactly what happened."

He crossed his arms, his frustration simmering just below the surface. "And what exactly are you trying to achieve here?"

Regina tilted her head, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Hmm..." She went back to her seat. "Want to know something?"

"No," Eryx answered right away, not in the mood to play his mother’s games.

She laughed, a slightly high-pitched sound that took him by surprise. His mother was always so serious, sometimes so self-absorbed that he wondered if she was a narcissist. She rarely laughed. But now, hearing that sincere laughter felt almost unsettling.

Regina wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, still chuckling. "Oh, my dear boy. You really think you can avoid it?"

Eryx’s jaw tightened. "Avoid what, exactly?"

She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Fate."

He stared at her, his patience wearing thin. "It’s funny hearing you talk about fate when you’re the one who always controls everything."

"Well... the moment I laid eyes on her, I knew right then. She’s going to be my daughter-in-law." Her smile widened.

Eryx’s eyes darkened, his voice low and sharp. "Over my dead body."
