My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 170: Within The Family

Chapter 170: Within The Family

The knock was so soft Eryx barely heard it. He opened the door anyway, and there stood the same doctor from months ago, the timid one who’d nearly dropped his stethoscope just by meeting Eryx’s eyes.

"Evening," the doctor greeted, eyes flicking nervously to Eryx’s face, then the open suite behind him. "I came as soon as I got the call."

Eryx stepped aside. "She’s in the kitchen. Wrapped in a blanket. Said she’s hot, fell over twice, and might’ve taken a painkiller before drinking half a bottle of wine." He pointed to the offending bottle on the table. "No, she’s not drugged."

The doctor paused in the middle of setting his bag down. "Right. Thank you."

Lunara was still perched on the stool, now humming to herself like she was waiting for a bedtime story. She gave the doctor a lazy wave. "Oh, it’s you! Hello, doctor."

He blinked. "Uh... good evening, madam."

She tilted her head. "You’re very small today."

The doctor smiled tightly, clearly unsure how to respond.

"She’s usually more coherent than this," Eryx said, leaning against the counter, arms crossed. "Just check if she’s okay."

"Yes, of course." The doctor approached carefully, like Lunara might leap off the stool. "Any dizziness?"

She held up one finger, eyes half-closed. "Only when I blink too fast."

"She fell," Eryx added.

"Softly," Lunara corrected.

The doctor nodded, checking her pulse and asking a few questions as she answered with far too much honesty and very little sense. Finally, he stood and turned to Eryx, voice quiet.

"She’s not in danger. Mixing alcohol with medication likely caused the reaction. Her vitals are a bit off, but nothing alarming. Hydration, food, and sleep will help."

"Great," Eryx muttered. "Can I tell her that, or will she say I’m impersonating her husband again?"

The doctor tried not to smile. "Maybe wait until she sobers up."

"Mm," Lunara mumbled behind them. "I like this one better than my husband. He’s kinder."

Eryx didn’t turn around. "I am your husband."

There was a pause.

"You’re grumpier than I remember," she whispered.

"I’ll take that as a compliment," Eryx said.

The doctor quietly packed up. "Call me if anything changes."

Eryx nodded. "Thanks."

He showed him out, then returned to the kitchen. Lunara had rested her cheek on the counter, eyes fluttering.

"I’m still hungry," she mumbled.

"Let’s finish your food and then go to sleep, okay?" he replied, lifted her up and carried her all the way to the dining table.

Lunara eventually slumped forward, cheek pressed against the table, her soft breaths evening out as sleep finally caught her. Eryx sighed, watching her for a moment before carrying her again, back to the bed.

A few quiet minutes passed before there was a ring on the bell.

Eryx opened it to find Callum standing there, looking like he’d aged five years in the last few hours. He hesitated before stepping in.

"Did Madam find you?" Callum asked in a whisper, peeking into the room nervously.

Eryx arched a brow and stepped aside to let him in. "You told her."

Callum winced as he stepped in. "I tried not to, sir. I really did. But she... she was like a little storm. Said she wouldn’t leave until I gave her answers. I even told her you were in Switzerland."

Eryx closed the door behind them. "And she believed that?"

"Of course not," Callum muttered, scratching his head. "She said if I didn’t talk, she’d follow me everywhere until I did. I thought she was joking. She wasn’t."

Eryx sighed and motioned toward Lunara. "She took a painkiller earlier, apparently forgot about it, and then drank half a bottle of wine."

Callum’s eyes widened. "Again?! Wait, not—drugged again?"

"No," Eryx said with a flat look, then pointed to the bottle on the table. "This time it’s self-inflicted chaos."

Callum craned his neck, checking on Lunara who was sleeping on the bed, "She is fast asleep, right, sir?" His expression started to shift, it’s getting serious.

"Did you get the info?" Eryx asked, walking to the couch and sitting down.

Callum gave one last glance at Lunara, who was now curled up on the bed, clutching the blanket like it was some prized possession. She let out a soft sigh in her sleep, mumbling something incoherent before going still again.

"Yeah, she’s out cold," Callum confirmed in a whisper, then straightened up, his usual assistant mode kicking in. "I did what you asked me to, and about Harlan... he didn’t seem to move."

Eryx crossed his arms. "I thought Matilda was the worst, but it seems like Harlan is ready to sacrifice his daughter just to protect himself."

Callum hesitated, then added, "After we sent Valerie back, she was seen meeting with some of Harlan’s old contacts. It looks like he’s using her as a buffer, keeping his hands clean while she handles the dirty work."

Eryx’s eyes narrowed. "So he’s pulling the strings from the shadows, letting Valerie take the fall if things go south."

"Exactly," Callum nodded. "And sir, about your old company... it’s true. Harlan was behind it. But..." He trailed off, his voice faltering. His lips pressed into a thin line, as if struggling with what to say next.

"What is it?" Eryx looked up sharply, his stare pinning Callum in place. "Continue."

Callum swallowed. "He did sabotage your company, but after digging deeper, we found something else. Old Madam... your grandmother, she might’ve been involved. It appears she was helping him behind the scenes. She was pulling strings to make sure Harlan succeeded. This wasn’t just Harlan acting alone. She backed him."

Eryx’s face remained unreadable for a moment, then slowly, his expression twisted into a sneer. His eyes dropped to the floor. "I knew it," he said under his breath, voice laced with quiet rage. His jaw clenched. "So when she mentioned Harlan the other day... it wasn’t out of guilt. She’d already decided to get rid of him and used me to do it."

He stood there, shoulders tense, as the pieces fell into place. The betrayal wasn’t just Harlan’s. It had started in his own home, within his family.
