My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 140: A Turn Of Luck
Chapter 140: A Turn Of Luck
"Sir," Callum’s voice was low and steady as he approached the table, leaning slightly toward Eryx. "Old Madam asked to see you. She said she didn’t understand your words earlier... and insists it’s urgent."
Eryx’s brows furrowed. He glanced at Naomi, who looked fine, laughing softly as Lunara teased her about her sudden cravings. He hesitated for a beat.
"She’s at the house?"
Callum nodded once. "Yes, sir. She asked for privacy."
With a soft sigh, Eryx stood. "Stay with them," he told Lunara quietly. "I’ll be back soon. Remember, don’t ever stray from them."
Lunara frowned instantly. "Ah... please. I’m not a kid anymore."
"I know," he murmured, pinching her cheek lightly. "I’m just worried."
Before she could react, he leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. Lunara’s eyes widened.
"People are watching," she whispered, flustered.
"What’s wrong with kissing my own wife?" Eryx said with a shrug, grinning.
"It’s wrong because I’m still here. Rude..." Naomi pouted, her tone playful.
But the air around the table shifted, just slightly. The moment stretched.
Naomi chuckled, breaking the silence. "I’m joking. No need to look so tense." She smiled like nothing happened, "Just go if your work is urgent."
Eryx nodded and left the table, Valerie watched from her seat, eyes narrowing with curiosity.
She immediately called her man, "Is it your work? Eryx already left."
"No Ma’am, I didn’t do anything yet." The man replied honestly.
Valerie blinked. "What?" she muttered under her breath. Her gaze flicked to the door just as Eryx stepped out of the restaurant. For a moment, confusion washed over her.
Then came the smile.
"Looks like luck really is on my side today," she murmured, crossing one leg over the other and signaling the waiter. "Let the show begin."
Valerie waited for the right moment.
When she saw Eryx’s car finally disappear beyond the curve of the street, she stood and adjusted her sunglasses, slipping her phone into her purse. Her heels clicked softly as she approached their table with calculated ease.
"Naomi? Madam?" Her voice rang out, sweet and surprised. "What a coincidence!"
Naomi blinked up. "Valerie?" she said, confused.
Valerie offered a charming smile. "I thought that was you. It’s been ages, mind if I say hello properly?" She glanced at Lunara, her gaze unreadable. "Oh, it’s been a while too Lunara. How are you?" She offered her hand for a handshake
Lunara stood slowly, her posture guarded. "I’m...fine. Thanks." She returned the handshake.
Valerie’s smile never wavered as she lowered her hand. "Actually... I was just heading to the garden terrace upstairs. There’s a lovely rooftop view, you know? I figured I’d grab a coffee there. Quiet, breezy... perfect for a little escape."
Naomi tilted her head, curious. "Rooftop? There’s a rooftop here?"
Valerie nodded eagerly. "It’s a bit tucked away... staff rarely mention it. Want to see? It’s just for a moment."
Regina remained silent, her eyes on the tablet but she did gaze up slightly, hearing the word rooftop but then she focused back to the tablet, too busy to join the conversation.
Naomi suddenly stood up, brushing crumbs off her dress. "Sounded great!. Let’s go look before the food arrives. I’m already walking slower lately, I need to keep moving before I stiffen up."
But Lunara looked hesitant, she didn’t know why, but she didn’t have a good feeling every time Valerie was around.
Lunara looked at Naomi, then back at Valerie. Something about her smile felt too polished, too timed. Still, Naomi was already moving, she was heading to stairs that were slightly hidden behind a wall.
Valerie turned, waving them along. "Come on, it’ll just be a few minutes."
Regina gazed up, looking at Lunara who was still hesitant, "You can go," she smiled, "I have some work to finish."
Lunara gave Regina a brief nod, still unsure. But Naomi was already reaching for the railing, her pace unhurried but there was excitement in them, one hand instinctively over her baby bump.
Valerie glanced over her shoulder, a hint of urgency hidden behind her bright expression. "It’s just a short climb. The view is beautiful, come, you will love it."
Lunara exhaled slowly and followed.
The stairwell was narrow and dim, lit only by a small window above that cast slanted light on the worn steps. It smelled faintly of old cleaning chemicals and dust. Naomi was already halfway up, her light footsteps echoing gently.
"Watch the second-to-last step," Valerie warned casually, walking just a bit behind Naomi now. "It’s a bit uneven."
They reached the top at last, and Valerie pushed open the door with a slight creak. A soft breeze greeted them as they stepped out onto the rooftop.
Naomi blinked at the sudden sunlight. "Oh..." she breathed out.
It was beautiful.
The rooftop was open and spacious, framed with dark wooden railing and a line of potted plants that swayed gently in the wind. The river shimmered in the distance, catching the light like scattered diamonds. A few white metal chairs and a small round table sat to one side, and beyond that, the view stretched out across the city, rooftops and trees layered under a wide, pale sky.
"Wow," Naomi whispered, placing a hand on her belly. "You weren’t lying."
Valerie smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Told you. It’s my little secret spot when I need to breathe." Of course she was lying, she just learned about it when she googled about the restaurant and found everything was on her side today.
Lunara walked out more slowly, her gaze sweeping across the space, breathing in the breeze.
"Let’s take a picture," Valerie said, pulling out her phone. "Just one or two? The lighting’s perfect."
Naomi grinned and moved toward the railing, holding her hair back from the wind. Valerie raised her phone, angling it just so.
Click. Click.
"Beautiful," she said. But her eyes weren’t really on the screen.
They were already on Lunara.
Calculating. Waiting.
She needed to act it well, to make sure, the blame was on Lunara.
