My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 126: The Puzzle of Memories
Chapter 126: The Puzzle of Memories
Eryx gently closed the door, careful not to wake Lunara. As he walked down the hallway, he ran into his mother, Regina.
"Going back to the office?" Regina stopped him with a soft voice. "It would be better if you just worked in your study, like you did last week."
Eryx shook his head lightly. "There’s an issue that needs me there," he said calmly. Then, noticing the tired lines on Regina’s face, he added, "You should get some rest. It’s already late."
Regina smiled faintly and bobbed her head. "Hmm... be careful, and don’t push yourself too hard." She reached out as if to touch his cheek but stopped midway. "Good night," she said softly, then walked past him.
"Mom..."
Eryx called out to her.
Regina paused, turning slightly to face him.
He hesitated for a moment, then said, "Thank you... for what you did for Lunara. I know... it wasn’t easy."
Regina’s expression softened. A mixture of guilt and warmth crossed her features. "It was the least I could do," she said, her voice almost a whisper. "For her... and for Lilith."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Regina gave him a small nod before continuing down the hallway, her steps slow and quiet.
Eryx stood there for a second longer before letting out a weak sigh. "Mom..."
"Hmm?" Regina arched her brows, pausing again.
Eryx’s expression made Regina more curious. "What is it?"
"About the past... don’t you think burying it in your memories would be best for all of us?" His sudden question deepened the crease between Regina’s brows.
"I don’t understand. What do you mean?" Regina’s breath grew heavier.
Eryx let out a slow exhale. "I know about it, Mom. I knew." He tried to smile, but it came out awkward and strained. "The complicated past you talked about... I think I can guess."
"How?" Regina looked shocked. She had thought she hid it well, apparently not well enough if Eryx had figured it out.
"I loved going into Dad’s study, remember?" Eryx said as he slowly walked toward her. "And I found her picture... tucked inside one of his books."
He pursed his lips. "I know this is awkward, and I don’t know everything about the past. But honestly, I don’t think it was your fault."
Regina stared at him, her throat tightening with emotion. For a long moment, she couldn’t speak. Then she managed a strained whisper, "You’re wrong about one thing."
Eryx frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
Regina smiled weakly, her eyes shimmering with old pain. "Even if it wasn’t entirely my fault... I still carry the guilt. Not because someone told me to. But because I know what we lost. What she lost."
Eryx remained quiet, listening.
"I loved him too," Regina admitted softly, a confession that sounded almost like a betrayal even after all these years. "Maybe not at first... but love came later. And by then, it was too late to change anything. Too late to fix what we broke."
Eryx lowered his head, processing her words.
"When she found out I was pregnant with you, she didn’t even blame me," Regina continued, her voice trembling. "She wished me the best..." She paused, struggling to contain the wave of emotions threatening to surface. "But I knew... I knew she broke inside."
Eryx slowly lifted his gaze, seeing a rare vulnerability in his mother’s face and slowly piecing together the whole situation. The tangled past, the broken friendships, the sacrifices none of them ever truly recovered from.
"I guess... it wasn’t fair for either of you," Eryx said quietly. His voice was steady, but his chest tightened with a strange sadness he couldn’t quite explain.
Regina gave a soft, weary smile. "Life rarely is."
For a moment, neither of them said anything. It wasn’t because there was nothing left to say, but because the weight of the past hung too heavy between them.
"Take care of her, Eryx," Regina said, her voice almost a whisper. "In a way... she’s all that’s left of what we lost."
He glanced briefly toward his room’s door, where Lunara slept peacefully inside. "I will..."
"Go, it’s already late." Regina offered him a feeble smile. "And don’t drive yourself. Ask the driver to take you."
Eryx gave a silent nod, then turned and made his way down the hallway without another word.
The quiet echoed around him, but his heart felt heavier than before.
As he stepped outside into the cool night air, Eryx couldn’t help but glance up at the dark sky.
He had so many responsibilities weighing on him, but somehow, taking care of Lunara didn’t feel like a burden.
He slid into the backseat of the waiting car, the driver greeting him with a polite nod before pulling away from the mansion.
Leaning his head against the window, he closed his eyes as his thoughts circled back to the memories of the past.
The quiet hum of the car and the cool glass against his temple lulled Eryx into a memory he hadn’t visited in a long time.
He remembered being a little boy, running through the garden with clumsy steps, his father’s warm laughter chasing after him.
His dad had been a kind man, gentle in a way that sometimes made Eryx forget the complicated ties that bound their family together.
Never once had his father shown anger or resentment toward Regina, even when the air between them felt too heavy with unspoken things.
He treated Eryx with patience and pride, always encouraging him, always steady.
But even back then, young as he was, Eryx could see it in his father’s eyes, there was kindness. There was duty. But there was no love.
Not the way a man would look at the woman he chose.
Still, his father had stayed.
And somehow, that had been enough.
Sighing, he leaned his head back against the seat. He kept his eyes closed, feeling the tiredness creeping into his bones.
But then, a flicker of different memories surfaced. One from six or seven years ago.
He remembered that night clearly.
Regina had rushed into his room, her face pale and panicked, begging him to drive her somewhere immediately.
For years, he hadn’t questioned it, he had buried it deep like so many other things.
But tonight, as the pieces slowly fell into place, something clicked inside him.
His eyes snapped open, sharp and unblinking.
The puzzle he had ignored for so long... he had just solved it.
