Chapter 125: The Past That Was Complicated

Chapter 125: The Past That Was Complicated

Lunara and Eryx were sitting at the dining table, quietly finishing their dinner. The clinking of cutlery echoed in the large hall, but neither seemed to mind the silence.

The sound of approaching footsteps drew their attention.

Regina walked in, gently guiding Naomi by the arm. Naomi looked better than she had days ago, her cheeks less pale, but the usual spark in her eyes was missing. She walked slowly, like her mind was somewhere else.

"She’s barely eaten all day," Regina said softly, half guiding, half nudging Naomi toward a chair. "Thought maybe some company would help."

"I’m not a child," Naomi muttered, but her voice was too weak to carry any real bite.

Eryx gave a small chuckle and pushed a plate toward her. "Then stop acting like one and sit down."

Naomi rolled her eyes faintly but dropped into the chair next to Lunara without protest.

Lunara offered a small smile and scooped food onto Naomi’s plate. "How are you today?"

Naomi gave her a thin, straight smile. "Hmm, getting better."

"Really?" Lunara’s face brightened or at least, she tried to make it look that way. "Then maybe we can go shopping tomorrow? I miss going out with you."

Naomi twirled her fork for a second, as if thinking. Then she gave a soft shrug. "Maybe."

It wasn’t an exciting yes, but it wasn’t a no either and Lunara decided to take it as a small victory.

"Lunara..." she started, her voice careful, "I know today has been heavy enough. But when you feel ready... there’s something I need to give you. Something your mother left."

The room fell into a soft, weighted silence.

Lunara’s fingers tightened around her fork. She didn’t look up right away, staring at the edge of her plate before finally lifting her eyes.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice low but steady.

Regina hesitated, pulling a worn envelope from her bag and placing it on the table.

"She wanted you to have this," Regina said. "It’s from before everything... before she lost everything."

Lunara reached out slowly. Inside the envelope was a simple handwritten letter, her mother’s familiar, elegant script and a set of documents.

Lunara’s breath caught when she unfolded the papers.

It wasn’t a check.

It was a deed.

"To a small villa," Regina explained softly. "It’s outside the city. It used to belong to her family before they lost everything. She managed to buy it back, in secret, before she got sick."

Lunara’s fingers trembled against the old parchment.

The villa wasn’t grand, not compared to the wealth of Eryx’s world but it was something precious: a piece of Lilith’s lost dignity. A home that was truly hers.

"She didn’t want to leave you with debts or regrets," Regina added softly. "Just a place where you could live free... on your own terms."

Lunara’s fingers tightened around the edge of the envelope. Her brows furrowed as she slowly lifted her gaze.

"What do you mean by ’before they lost everything’?"

Regina’s expression shifted, a flicker of hesitation crossing her face.

"Hm... that’s a long story," she said carefully, glancing briefly at Naomi and Eryx. "And I don’t think this is the right place for me to tell it."

Lunara’s brows drew tighter. "Why?" she asked, her voice calm but firm.

Regina let out a slow breath, her fingers curling slightly around the glass in front of her.

"Because it’s not a simple story, Lunara," she said after a pause. "Your mother... and I... our past is more complicated than you might think. And if I tell it, I want you to hear it properly. Not like this, not at a dinner table."

The room went quiet again. Naomi shifted a little in her seat, glancing between them, sensing the tension but not daring to interrupt.

Eryx just sat quietly, his gaze steady on Lunara.

Lunara studied Regina’s face for a long moment, her heart strangely heavy.

"So... your relationship was more complicated than just being best friends?" Lunara asked, her voice low. She could sense something in Regina’s eyes, but her curiosity was too strong to wait.

Regina hesitated, her lips pressing together in a thin line.

"In some ways... yes," she admitted quietly. "But not in the way you might be thinking."

She glanced down at her hands for a moment before meeting Lunara’s eyes again.

"Your mother was like a sister to me. I loved her. I still do. But when life pushed us into different corners, when... choices had to be made," she said, voice tightening, "I ended up hurting her, even when I didn’t want to."

Lunara opened her mouth, but no words came out.

She didn’t know what to ask first, about the past, about her mother, about the choices that separated them.

Regina gave a soft, almost bitter smile. "Someday soon, I promise I’ll tell you everything. You deserve to know."

Beside her, Naomi poked at her food awkwardly, clearly wishing she was anywhere else.

Eryx reached out under the table and brushed his fingers against Lunara’s hand, grounding her again.

"Let’s take it slow," Eryx said gently, looking only at her. "One thing at a time."

Lunara inhaled deeply, steadying herself.

"Okay," she said quietly, her fingers curling around him. "One thing at a time."

Regina hesitated, then pushed a second envelope toward Lunara.

"And this..." she said, her voice softer, almost careful, "this is from your mother. In a way."

Lunara frowned, reaching for the envelope. She opened it slowly and froze. Inside was a check made out to her name, the amount blinking up at her: three million dollars.

Her breath caught. "What is this...?"

Regina leaned forward slightly, her hands clasped together.

"After your grandfather’s bankruptcy, a lot of what was supposed to be your mother’s inheritance... it was tangled up, hidden, or simply taken," she explained. "Most people gave up trying to reclaim anything. But I didn’t. I couldn’t."

She smiled faintly, something pained and proud at once.

"It took years, but I fought for it. For her. And now, it’s yours. As it always should have been."

Lunara’s hands trembled slightly as she stared at the check.

It wasn’t just money. It was proof that someone had cared enough to fight for her mother’s dignity, even after everything was lost.
