Chapter 108: No Calm After The Storm
Chapter 108: No Calm After The Storm
Eryx closed the car door after Lunara got in, the soft thud of the door cutting through the stillness of the cemetery. He turned and locked eyes with Callum, who stood near the vehicle with a solemn expression. The weight of Mila’s death lingered in the air, heavy and unspoken.
"Check where Amara was a few days before Mila’s death. Look into any connections she might have had with the woman who kidnapped Mila," Eryx ordered, his voice unwavering but tinged with the sharp edge of frustration.
Callum furrowed his brows, a flicker of doubt crossing his face. "Sir, do you think she was the person behind this?"
Eryx shook his head, his jaw tightening as he stared off into the distance. "I don’t think so. But check anyway, just in case I misjudged. We can’t afford any mistakes."
Callum hesitated for a moment, processing the weight of Eryx’s words, then nodded. "Understood, sir. I’ll get on it."
Eryx watched as Callum walked away, his thoughts already drifting back to the unsettling silence of the graveyard.
Knocking on the driver’s side window, Eryx spoke to the driver. "Uncle, I’ll drive today. Can you go back with Callum?"
The driver nodded instantly, understanding the situation, before leaving to rush over to Callum’s car.
Opening the back door, Eryx found Lunara fast asleep, her head resting gently against the seat, her breathing steady. The past few days had worn her thin—too many tears, too little sleep.
Without a word, he leaned in and carefully scooped her into his arms.
She stirred slightly, her eyelids fluttering open for just a moment, confused but too tired to speak. Instinctively, her arms looped around his neck as her head dropped against his shoulder. It wasn’t conscious, just her body reacting to the warmth and steadiness she didn’t know she needed.
Eryx paused for a heartbeat and his jaw tightening.
Then he moved quietly, placing her in the passenger seat with care before getting behind the wheel.
The car hummed quietly as Eryx drove through the winding streets, one hand on the wheel, the other resting near the gearshift. The day’s weight pressed heavily on him, but every few seconds, his eyes drifted to Lunara, fast asleep in the passenger seat. She hadn’t stirred since he carried her into the car, completely worn down from grief and exhaustion.
Her small handbag sat between them on the armrest where he’d placed it earlier, the soft leather pressed slightly out of shape from the way it leaned.
A sharp vibration buzzed against the armrest. Her phone, buried somewhere inside the bag, lit up through the slightly open zipper.
Eryx frowned and reached over, unzipping it just enough to slide the phone out.
Unknown Number.
He stared at it for a beat before his instincts prickled.
"Hello." He answered the call.
A woman’s voice replied, calm but urgent. "Yes, hello, this is Nurse Ellis from St. Alden’s General Hospital. Are you a relative of Miss Lunara Hayes?"
"Hospital?" He glanced at Lunara and softened his voice. "I’m her husband. Why?"
"Oh, Mr. Hayes?"
"No. Grantham. Eryx Grantham," he corrected calmly.
There was a brief silence before the nurse gently continued, "Mr. Grantham, we’ve been trying to reach Miss Lunara for a few days now. Her mother’s condition has been unstable, and today things worsened. We weren’t able to get through until now."
Eryx’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. "She hasn’t been in the right frame of mind," he said quietly. "She didn’t have her phone on her."
"I understand," the nurse replied with compassion. "But the doctor is requesting she come in as soon as possible. Her mother’s oxygen levels are dropping. We can’t promise how much time she has left."
Eryx glanced at Lunara. Her head rested against the window, strands of dark hair spilling over her cheek, completely unaware of the call or the world unraveling around her.
"I understand," he said firmly. "I’ll come as soon as possible."
The moment the call ended, he slipped her phone back into the bag and zipped it closed.
He changed lanes.
They wouldn’t go to the hospital.
Not together.
He drove them home in silence, stealing glances at her every few minutes, making sure she stayed asleep. When he finally pulled into the mansion compound, she stirred slightly.
"Mm... are we back?" she murmured.
"Yes," he replied softly. "We’re home."
She didn’t open her eyes. Eryx got out, walked around, and gently scooped her into his arms again. Her fingers twitched, brushing his shirt, but she didn’t wake. He carried her inside and laid her on the bed, pulling the blanket over her with a care no one would expect from him.
She shifted once, but settled quickly.
Eryx stood at the edge of the bed for a long moment. Then he turned and left the room.
Silently driving himself to St. Alden’s General Hospital, he chose a quiet, more secluded parking lot at the back. The lot was less frequented, offering the privacy he wanted. The last thing he needed was to attract attention when his only concern was his mother-in-law, Lilith Hayes.
He parked and stepped out of the car, glancing around to ensure no one had spotted him. His eyes narrowed as he pulled his coat collar up slightly against the chill evening air. He was doing everything in his power to stay under the radar.
Just as he was about to head toward the entrance, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Eryx?"
He turned, his body instinctively tensing as he saw Valerie standing a few feet away. She was dressed impeccably, even for the late afternoon, her coat sharp and her hair perfectly styled. She seemed to have an uncanny ability to show up when it suited her.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice colder than usual.
She smiled smoothly, taking a few steps forward. "One of the board members I work with, Mr. Cleary, was admitted yesterday. Minor stroke. I was just upstairs visiting."
Eryx gave a short nod, clearly uninterested. "Hope he recovers well."
Valerie took a step closer, her heels tapping lightly on the concrete. "I didn’t expect to see you here, though. Hospital’s a bit off your usual track, aren’t they?"
He didn’t answer. He had no reason to explain himself to her.
Then, suddenly, she reached out, brushing a bit of lint from his lapel. Her fingers lingered a second longer than necessary.
He flinched, instinctively stepping back. "What are you doing?"
Valerie gave a soft laugh. "Relax. There was something on your coat. I brushed it away."
As she smiled, her eyes subtly flicked toward a car parked a few spots away.
Then, almost too quickly, her expression shifted. "Oh, I heard about your daughter. I’m sorry to hear—"
"I’m late," Eryx cut her off, his voice cold.
Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away, leaving her behind in the parking lot.
