By noon, I received a text from Mom informing me that the cotton was packed and that we would be receiving it by tomorrow. She had also notified Karsten.

A natural urge to confide in Mom about the threat I had received invaded my brain, but I didn’t intend to worry her. After the lunch break, Karsten called me into the office.

"I am leaving to receive the shipment for the cotton, it has arrived. Call an emergency meeting with all the required departments. I will speak to them on my arrival. We need to get started as soon as possible," he said, picking up the coat from the back of his chair. I had noticed he didn’t wear ties apart from some very formal meetings.

"Yes, Sir."

Karsten left the room, closing the door behind him, while I logged into the Discord server of the company and put in the announcement for an emergency meeting within two hours. It was time to arrange coffee and refreshments for them.

When Karsten returned, I sensed this satisfaction and composedness in his gait. In simple words, he seemed utterly content, and it showed on his face, for the expressions weren’t as wooden as he usually loved to keep.

He even flashed me a smile which was as rare as a chance of finding a pearl on the beach.

The head of the Production team began to discuss how much time they needed to prepare, while the Marketing and Sales teams presented how they would move forward once the dresses were ready.

The meeting lasted an hour as I took notes of important points discussed. I would later update them on the server as an announcement, ensuring every employee knew how much time we had to complete the required tasks.

The date for the Winter Gala was set for mid-December, with Karsten required to make an appearance on the ramp. This always riled up the audience and boosted sales whenever Karsten walked the runway. The suit he donned usually ended up as the best seller for that season. The man had the knack to make a style statement and I was sure this season wouldn’t be any different.

Once the meeting had ended and everyone had left for the day. Karsten held me back. Leaning against the table, he crossed his buffed arms against his chest and faced me.

His inky eyes shone with a fervour today, not as gloomy as they usually appeared. The touch of playfulness was hard to miss.

"We should call our mysterious helper and thank her. I want you to do it, right now."

Was he testing me?

"Of course, Sir," I replied without hesitation. He could be suspicious and my reluctance will only push him to investigate this further.

I held out my hand, waiting for his phone but he merely shook his head. The perfect strands of his hair slipped onto his forehead and decorated it.

"Do it from your phone. Introduce yourself and then I will speak. It’s professional this way. Besides, we might need her again. I want you to create a direct line of contact with her, and in the future, we might have a collaboration with her company. I don’t want to lose such an asset."

His words made sense, and internally, I was glad because that was one of my intentions to have his company become a trading partner with ours. But, getting to know him so far, I had understood how smart he was, and this all could be another test to see if I was related to that woman or not. He certainly had his doubts about it.

"Certainly, sir." Taking out my phone, I quickly deleted Mom’s number so that when I dialled, her name wouldn’t appear. My heart thudded loudly inside my chest as my palms got all clammy and sweaty.

"Can I have the number?" Lifting my gaze, I glanced in Karsten’s direction and he was closely watching me. Calm and composed, not a hair out of place, while here I had hit the panic mode.

He narrated my mother’s number with ease. The man with coals for his eyes had memorised it, Karsten never failed to amaze me, or maybe I was too lazy to memorise them.

Opening the dial pad, I dialled the number and lowered the volume of my speaker so that when Mom answered, her voice wouldn’t leak out.

I waited for her to pick up while placing the phone against my ear. His sharp gaze and raised brows remained focused on me as if I was robbing a bank while having him tied up against the table and not merely placing a call.

Mom picked up, and before she could speak, I began.

"Hello! Ma’am, I am Mr Karsten’s secretary speaking. He is here with me and would like to extend his heartfelt thank you for the assistance you have provided."

My mom was smart and understood why I was speaking in that fashion.

"Hello! I hope the shipment has been received and the product has met the required standards," she spoke smoothly, a slight detachment in her tone could be sensed.

My eyes wavered to Karsten, he offered me a nod while extending his hand. I knew he wished to check if the number that appeared on the screen remained unknown or was already saved on my cell phone.

I gladly handed him my phone which he calmly took and placed against his ear.

"Good evening, how may I address you?" He respectfully asked while his onyx eyes remained fixed on me.
