Chapter 43: Kill the baby

Arrrrrgh!

The beast wolf launched itself forward, claws out as it was ready to slash Rashin’s face.

Rashin acted fast, taking a step back to dodge the first attack, his eyes following the beast’s movements.

Just when he thought he had seen an opening, another beast appeared behind him.

"Die, you bastard!!!" the monster yelled with rage.

Once again, Rashin was one step ahead.

[Teleport]

He reappeared behind the beast, only to run into another beastman that tried to grab his neck.

Before the monster could touch his skin, his auto-barrier skill activated, crafting a barrier to block the attack.

The beast’s hand repelled after making contact with the barrier, bones crushed together under the impact.

The beast wolf fell to the ground, painful screams leaving his mouth as he held his broken hand.

Rashin did not care.

Slash!

His sword sliced off the head of the monster, its headless body falling to the ground.

"Now then... That leaves four of you." Rashin turned his attention to the rest.

Somehow, Rashin had managed to kill two of their own in a matter of minutes.

Beast wolves were known to be a warrior race; losing battles was never on the agenda for them.

And yet... this human...

"Dammit, what the hell are you anyway?!" a beast wolf yelled as he charged forward, rage mixed with anger.

Rashin stretched his hand forward, resting it on the head of the beast as he was running toward him.

"Uhn?"

The wolf beast was surprised—no, more like he finally realized he was never a match for Rashin.

Like the sun itself cried, the wolf beast got consumed by flames, his screams buried under the sound of scorching fire as he too fell to the ground.

The remaining three lost any hope of winning the battle. Their fear was evident; there was no way they could hide it.

One human had just wiped out their entire clan.

"Shit! Run! Scatter!" one of them yelled.

Not a single one of them questioned that order.

Running for their lives, they began to speed forward, running on all fours for a faster pace.

"Satella," Rashin called out.

(I’m on it.)

From within Rashin’s grasp, Satella charged forward in her flame form, soaring through the air like a dragon as she chased down the wolf beast.

The beast tried to run, trying to create a large distance between himself and the raging fire chasing him and his comrades.

In the end, it was pointless.

Every time he looked back, the devil was right there, gaining on him.

He couldn’t help but tear up.

As the flames caught up to one of his comrades, he could hear the screams—the same screams the rest left behind before they were consumed by the flames.

It was never over. Even when he looked to the side, yet another one of his comrades fell to the flames, his body burning to a crisp as he fell to the ground.

There was no escaping it.

"I’m gonna die!"

The last survivor of the beast wolves tripped on his feet and fell to the ground.

He didn’t waste any time; he immediately turned around. Just like he had guessed, the devil was still chasing him.

"Wait. Wait! Don’t kill me! I... I don’t want to die yet! I beg of you, don...t... don’t let me..."

Was the devil ever beautiful?

The flames that should have consumed him suddenly appeared as a beautiful lady with long red hair.

Her hand tightened around his neck before she raised him from the ground.

There was no way in hell anyone would see her flaming eyes and not be afraid.

"I beg of you. Spare me... please..."

Satella pulled the wolf beast closer and whispered—

"Blame your own bad luck that you managed to enrage the wrong person. My master is not so merciful when angered."

The wolf beast tried to force a smile under his fear. "H-he doesn’t have to... know you spared my li—"

His words were cut short, replaced by screams as the fire that once consumed his comrades ate away at his skin.

The devil was indeed beautiful.

With a slight tug, Satella tossed the corpse to the side.

She needed to return to her master.

Rashin was walking back to where the dead villagers were.

He remembered the wolf beasts had left some of them in an agonizing state but never killed them.

Rashin knew better than to let them continue to suffer, even though there was no way they could live through it.

[Dagger.]

His weapon appeared in his hand.

Daki stood at the side, covering the eyes of the boy so he wouldn’t have to witness the death of his loved ones again.

Getting ready to stab the first person he picked, Rashin’s eyes widened in surprise when he realized what was hiding behind the dead corpse.

It was a baby.

’A baby beast person?’ he questioned.

He was sure he hadn’t killed any female wolf beasts—they were all male.

’Don’t tell me they forcefully took this child from another clan!’

Rashin bit his lower lip; the entire thought disgusted him.

Still, it was a wolf beast regardless.

Once it came of age, it would awaken its instinct to kill and hunt humans.

"I’m sorry."

Rashin raised his dagger, ready to stab the child.

"Master, wait!" Satella yelled. She had arrived a while back.

Rashin paused.

"Master, I don’t think you should kill this baby! We... we can just give it to the villagers; they might be willing to raise it as one of their own," Satella voiced out.

"It’s still a child. It hasn’t done anything to warrant death."

Daki sighed. "You can’t raise a monster to be human, Satella. They were made to kill."

"Yeah, I know that! But still..."

"Don’t confuse the young master with your babyish thinking."

Satella stepped forward. "It’s a baby! Do you think the master wants to do it?!"

"Of course not. But that is why he is our master. I am sure he thought it through before coming to a choice."

As they argued behind him, Rashin couldn’t help but stare at the baby.

The noise from the girls had probably woken him up.

He had innocent eyes, his small limbs curling up as he tried to grab Rashin from afar.

Those were not the eyes of a killer.

Rashin remained there, lost in thought.

Something about the current situation reminded him of his life before the Hakia attacked the world.

When it was just him and his elder sister.

Something like this had happened before.

A stray... A lost and hungry stray... But what stray? Rashin had desperately wanted to take care of it, despite his sister warning him of the danger.

His butt collapsed to the ground.

"Honestly... I really hate making difficult decisions." Rashin sighed.

The fact that he finally spoke after keeping quiet for so long caused the girls to quit their bickering.

"Let’s take it back to the village."

Hearing this, Daki sighed, while Satella had a huge smile on her face.

"I don’t know if they’ll be able to accept it. If they can’t, we’ll take the baby along with us to Fiona Kingdom. I’m sure there should be an orphanage there or something," Rashin uttered.

"As you wish, young master." Daki bowed.

Satella, on the other hand, could not wait to carry the child.

After a few minutes of walking back to the village, Rashin finally met up with some of the villagers.

"What? H-how could this have happened? Daniel was one of our strongest here... He wouldn’t..."

The old man paused, seeing the pitiful look on the little one’s face.

It was only natural, considering he had just lost his parents.

The old man sighed, murmurs from the rest of the village reaching him.

"We’ll inform the lady about this. Although I doubt she’d be happy—we did attack monsters without her permission." The old man sighed. "We’ll handle it ourselves. So thank you, Traveler."

Throughout, Rashin did not say a word.

Suddenly, he reached out for the baby wrapped in a comfy fabric and held the baby in his arms.

"We found this there too. I was hoping you could take care of him." Rashin managed to give a sad smile. "I know it’s asking a lot, considering he is the same race as the people that killed your friends and colleagues. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame you if you would rather throw this baby away. But I just thought—"

"Oh my, it’s a little wolf baby. It’s so cute."

"Uhn?"

Rashin was speechless, watching as the old woman began to carefully poke the baby’s cheeks.

"Aww, poor thing, probably scared. And he is dirty too." The old woman looked at Rashin. "Mind handing him over? I should clean him up; it’s not good for a baby to be so dirty."

Rashin could not sense any form of ill thoughts from the woman—she was genuinely caring for the child.

And from the looks of the rest of the villagers, it didn’t seem like they objected to it either.

A smile formed on Rashin’s face.

"Please do," he said, handing the baby over to the woman.
