Chapter 32: Seriphina

Bang!

The villager fell to his knees, instantly falling unconscious.

Eri covered her mouth hastily, watching as more and more of the other soldiers began to gang up on Rashin.

"Shouldn’t we go up there to help him?" she asked Daki.

"My orders were to protect you. I do not wish to disobey my master," Daki responded.

"It’s not him I’m worried about, it’s the villagers. I don’t want him to end up killing them," Eri looked back at Rashin.

Even while he was getting cornered by the villagers, Rashin was still holding his ground against them, slamming his fist on their heads to render them unconscious.

’Oh... he’s not killing them,’ Eri calmed, taking a moment to catch her breath.

"Damn you!"

A villager yelled, stretching his hand toward Rashin.

A fireball began to form, growing bigger and bigger as the boy added more mana to it.

"Wait! Don’t do that...!" Rashin yelled.

"Fireball!" The villager yelled, sending the fire toward Rashin’s position.

[Body Barrier.]

Rashin was quick to put up a barrier around himself, the flames bouncing off him.

But in order to protect himself, the buildings nearest to him had to pay the price. The fire rained on the building tops, engulfing them in flames.

Everyone panicked, trying to get as far away from the flames as possible.

The ones who were unconscious didn’t have that choice, as they could not move.

Landing on the ground, a man dressed in brown clothing with long black hair grabbed the hand of the villager who had used the fire magic.

"What the hell were you thinking?! You could have destroyed the village!" the man yelled.

The fire user could only stare at his handiwork with a traumatized expression. The flames had already swallowed the forms of the other unconscious villagers.

"Shit! He killed them."

"What are we going to tell the Grand Mistress?"

"This is bad."

Each of the villagers began to whisper among themselves, their anxiety already spreading through the air.

They could not say the word, all they could do was stare at the burning fire.

Daki sighed, "My master is truly generous. Despite how they attacked him, he is still trying to save them."

For a second, Eri thought Rashin had also been engulfed by the flames. Since she didn’t see him after the fire spread, she thought he was struggling to free himself.

"You can tell he’s okay?" asked Eri, her hand already gripping her staff.

She was more than ready to put out all the flames.

"Yes. Such a weak attack is not enough to graze my master."

Eri carried a deadpan look. "You really do think highly of Rashin, don’t you?"

"Of course. Master is perfect in every way. You should too," Daki replied, not once turning her gaze away from the flames.

Just then, the murmurs coming from the villagers grew louder.

Both Daki and Eri were forced to look at the scene before them.

More and more villagers had gathered, each one having the same look of surprise on their faces.

But that wasn’t what caught their attention—it was the black-haired woman standing at the very front of the masses.

She wore a brown sleeveless top and a long skirt that almost reached her feet, complemented by a hat on her head that covered her face with a veil. Both her arms had white bandages wrapped around them.

"Lady Seraphina. He did it! He was the one that burned down the buildings and killed the rest of the villagers," one of the villagers yelled while pointing at the fire user.

"I didn’t mean to, my lady! I swear on my life! I only wanted to exterminate the intruder!"

The woman was silent for a while, then she raised her head toward the burning flames.

"How long do you plan on hiding in there, traveler?" she announced.

Eri immediately turned her attention to the flames, her eyes trying to determine if the strange woman was referring to Rashin.

From within the flames, a powerful wind blew, extinguishing the fire that had been consuming the buildings.

Black burns now marred the rooftops, the entire area reeking of burnt hay and ashes.

Yet, no one paid attention to any of that.

Their gazes were all fixed on Rashin.

He was seated atop one of the buildings, a barrier shielding both himself and the villagers closest to him from the flames.

"I thought I’d wait until you people gave up and left. I’m guessing that’s no longer an option," Rashin said as he stared directly at Seraphina.

The entire place was in shock. Not only was the intruder alive, but he had also saved the villagers from being burned to death.

’What the hell are you doing, Rashin? Hurry up and get down from there so we can make a break for it!’ Eri desperately thought to herself, continuously playing with her fingers to calm down.

Now pointing at Seraphina, Rashin asked, "Are you... the one in charge around here?"

"Yes, I am," she replied.

"Good, then."

Rashin leaped down from the building, standing a few inches away from Seraphina.

The villagers behind her had already drawn their weapons, ready to attack Rashin if he tried anything.

"Can you call your men off? Believe it or not, my goal is not to hurt anyone here. Since you’re the one in charge, they should listen to you, right?" Rashin asked.

"Depends. I can see several of my people unconscious. Are you not the one responsible for that?" Seraphina countered.

Rashin was a bit speechless.

"Well, uhn, they did try to attack me first. All I did was knock them down, they are not dead."

"That was only because you snuck into our village!" another villager yelled from the crowd.

Rashin sighed. Nothing he said seemed to be getting through to them.

"Considering you saved my people from burning, it would be rude of me not to show you my gratitude," Seraphina uttered.

"Lady Seraphina?!" one of the villagers yelled, worry etched on his face.

But Seraphina raised her hand to silence him.

"Would you like to spend the morning in my village? I’d like to reward you for your deed, dear traveler," Seraphina said to Rashin.

Rashin took a second to look at Eri, who in turn gave the go-ahead with a thumbs-up.

He looked back at Seraphina.

"If you insist. Sure."
