Miho the Killer -
Chapter 83: Leap Of Faith
Chapter 83: Leap Of Faith
After hearing the thud-thud-thud Miho swore and ushered me to find cover behind some piled-up wooden boxes that were the closest to us.
I looked up and also saw the police helicopters approach, four of them, with search lights searching for us like an angry landlord hunting down the cockroaches that infested his house.
It took them no time to arrive at the scene and I saw each of them throw down a rope. The Police Special Ops started to rappel down.
"Hiding here won’t do us any good. We gotta run."
With that, Miho grabbed my hand and started running toward the opposite end of the rooftop from where Ilseong’s mob was. They were now getting ready to fight the incoming police forces - probably a futile effort considering they can’t swing and bat away bullets mid-air. Even my tigress couldn’t do that.
Luckily, because the mob was getting corned to the other end of the rooftop, we could reach the opposite side with relative ease.
Wasn’t this just another dead end though?
My heart felt heavy at the growing sense of inevitability.
We are going to get arrested here.
We would both get jailed for decades at least. Maybe 10-15 years for me if I was lucky. I didn’t kill anyone after all, but punishment for drug trafficking was harsh enough in Korea. I thought ’I’m really not made for prison life’ then shook my head at my own silliness. What the heck am I even thinking? As if there are women who are made for prison life.
On a more - a LOT more - serious note, Miho was probably facing a life sentence, if not, become the first case of an actual execution from capital punishment in decades considering how many people she’d killed, including multiple police officers tonight alone.
I shuddered at the thought and tried my best to repel the growing petrification that was starting to spread from my feet planted on the concrete ground.
"We gotta jump."
Wait.
"What?"
"It’s tight. Jumping over to that building’s rooftop might be a bit of a reach, but we could make it to those emergency stairs you see over there."
"I can’t!"
"I’d say about 4 meters at tops. We are jumping from higher ground to lower so that should make it easier."
"I... I never managed to make 4 meters in the long jump back in school..."
"Seriously?"
Miho looked at me like it was the most normal thing to jump well beyond 4 meters in a long jump for a girl.
"You know, the average long jump distance for a 16 year old girl is 4 to 4.8 meters. I could do beyond 5.5m by then." Miho continued lecturing me with a factoid.
OK, she might have a point there. But what I couldn’t do was what I couldn’t do.
"Please, stop. I can’t do this."
"You can, Sohee. Trust me. Just run and jump as if your life depended on it."
If I jumped off from the rooftop like this, my life would indeed depend on making that jump. Obviously.
"My legs are already starting to give away just at the thought of it."
"Hey! Over there!"
Just as I was shaking at the thought of even trying to make that jump, one of the Special Ops seemed to have finally spotted us and yelled out to his team.
"We got no time! I will jump first. Do your best, Sohee. At least try to make it to the edge and I will grab you. OK?"
"Miho, No-"
Without hesitation, Miho backed off, did a run up, and jumped with a great leap, as gracefully as the best feline specimen.
I leaned over and saw that Miho hit the emergency stairway’s metal landing perfectly.
As if I could do that...
"Come on! Do it now!"
Miho yelled over.
My legs were still shaking and I was leaning more toward just giving up and heading to jail than doing this jump.
"Stay where you are!"
The voice of the policeman who spotted us was getting louder.
"Over here!"
Now he was even calling his team over.
"Trust me! I will catch you! Please, have some faith in me, Sohee!"
Miho was urging me desperately.
I... I can’t do this...
"For fuck’s sake! Fine! I’ll come back and get you outta there!"
Miho finally gave up and started to look around to find an option to come back to the club building. I had no idea how that would even be possible but the look on her face told me that she was dead serious. If I didn’t jump now this idiot probably goes back to Club Volta through the front door and make her way back up to the rooftop again.
Idiot.
You really are an idiot, Miho.
How can I not love you?
I quickly ran away from the ledge to make some distance and saw that two Special Ops men were getting ever so closer - thankfully not too close now as they were approaching cautiously.
Screw this.
I’ve fallen for an idiot.
So I will do something super idiotic too now.
I gritted my teeth, took off my high heels, and ran.
I was never good at this.
Please let me make it just this one time.
I made the best run I could do and kicked off the edge of the rooftop and made the leap. I closed my eyes and felt the chilly night breeze swirl around me. It’s not like having my eyes open would do me any good, as if I could change direction mid-air.
Then I landed on something a lot softer than what I expected, sooner than expected too.
"Heh, I knew you could do it."
When I opened my eyes I saw that I was in Miho’s arms.
I don’t know what came over me, but in the moment of heat and cold, I grabbed her head with my both hands and kissed her on the lips.
My killer, my savior.
An idiot that would do anything for me.
An idiot that I would do anything for.
