Miho the Killer -
Chapter 82: On The Rooftop
Chapter 82: On The Rooftop
"Time to go, Sohee!"
Miho walked all the way over to me to snap me out of my trance. The sound of the double gunshots still rang in my ear, reverberating and amplifying deafeningly loud in my hollow skull.
There was nothing more I could do except to leave Detective Choi’s dead body behind, but I knew the guilt would follow me forever.
I had Kwon killed before.
But I didn’t kill him.
Or so I always liked to tell myself.
It was Shin who ’burnt’ him to death after all.
I was there.
I was there commanding his death and witnessing the eternal burn he had to suffer.
And I have to say I felt terrible about it. Understatement.
But I managed. I managed to rationalize it. Perhaps I already rationalized it long before the final act was actually committed. That is to say - I was prepared. Kwon’s death was something I prepared myself for a long time. I steeled my resolve for that moment over time. It was a difficult but conscious decision, and I felt I had unforgivable but justifiable reasons for it. It was the cross that I decided to bear. A burden of my own choice, a crime committed at my own accord.
With Detective Choi, everything felt different.
I wondered if he really knew that I was working together with Miho or thought that I was an innocent civilian that he needed to protect, even at the cost of his own life.
He surely suspected foul play from Shin, but it was doubtful that he knew the true killer side of Miho after only seeing her at the hospital back then.
But then again, I had no idea for how long he’d been suspecting or following Shin. Maybe he knew, maybe he didn’t.
Now he knew, but it was too late.
All these questions meant nothing now when the only man who could answer them was lying dead on the ground and had he been alive, any answer he would give could only make me feel worse.
As I was lost in my thoughts and my heart filled with dread, the calm Tiger came and gently grabbed my hand, gave it a tug, pulling me away from the office and to Room 5 where the escape window was supposed to be.
I walked carefully over the corpses but couldn’t help myself from stepping on the pool of blood that seemed to cover the entire floor. It felt slippery and sticky at the same time.
Room 5 was empty when we went in, a small window was open - just about big enough to fit a man through. Miho peeked out carefully and confirmed what we had heard before.
"Yup, there’s a ladder going up to the rooftop here. Let’s do this."
As I hesitated, she calmly called out to me again.
"I will go up first in case there’s anyone waiting up there. You follow me closely."
I nodded.
She then climbed out of the window and moved to the left side, disappearing from my view.
"Come now!"
I could hear her shout and I followed. I looked down before grabbing onto the ladder stuck on the wall on my left. It was ’only’ the fourth floor but I was certain that I would die if I dropped from here.
But despite all the guilt and self-loathing I felt for myself right now, I had a strong will to live, stronger than ever. Miho had gone through all this not just for herself or Shin, but also to save me and bring me out of this hell. To waste my life would be to waste her effort.
I felt a little nauseous, but I gritted my teeth and grabbed onto the ladder and started to climb.
"Wait a moment."
Miho looked down for a moment and told me to stop, then continued her way upward, just sticking her head out a little to check what was happening on the rooftop.
"Fucking hell."
She grunted.
It was understandable. Before the slaughter in the corridor, a lot of Ilseong men managed to escape. The rooftop must be packed with them. I wondered what their plan was.
"Can you wait here?"
The agile tiger looked down at me again and asked.
"No. I’m sorry. But I can’t hang on to this for too long... I feel like I could fall any minute."
My fear of heights wasn’t to the extent that I couldn’t climb a ladder, but it was bad enough that I couldn’t hang outside the fourth floor indefinitely.
"Right. Follow me closely then. We will sneak through."
Miho waited a bit until I climbed a few more steps to catch up with her, right on her heels, then she went over the ledge to get on the rooftop. She poked her head out again and checked to make sure I was coming up safely, and helped me get over the ledge too.
"Shhhh"
She put a finger on her lips to signal that I should be quiet.
I was already so scared and numb at the same time I felt like a living dead, a walking corpse, a ghost from the fourth floor that managed to ascend a little.
When I calmed down a little and looked around, I saw why Miho wanted to go stealth mode rather than her usual gung-ho style.
There were at least thirty or forty Ilseong men on the rooftop, all of them looking around frantically to find some way out of here.
It was all good and well that they had an escape route to the rooftop, but it felt stupid as hell that this was just another dead-end and there was no further way we could go. This was just a literal fire escape to run and wait for help to arrive in case there was no way out through the ground floor. It wasn’t designed to be some sort of a secret escape route for the mob.
Then there was a loud commotion among them as I also heard thud-thud-thud sound approaching us from above, which made Miho cuss.
"Fuck. Choppers."
