Chapter 41: Simple Tasks
Chapter 41: Simple Tasks
I waited until 11 AM before sending a text to Kwon. Perhaps it was a risky game considering that I really needed to set up the upcoming dinner ’date’ with him before work ended today, but at the same time, I didn’t want to appear so keen by sending him a message the first thing in the morning after work starts. He wasn’t likely to turn me down or anything at this stage before luring me to bed in some fancy hotel, but perhaps he would want to assert total dominance by making me chase after him some more.
Luckily though, probably thanks to me giving a little push last time, he bit the bait and replied to me almost instantly.
"Good morning! It’s good to hear from you again."
OK. This was the signal for me to have a short flurry of messages to turn it into a conversation.
"I’m good. Sorry about the other night, it was late and I was really tired from work." I told him.
"No problem. Work can be a real pain, right?"
"Sure it feels that way. How’s your work?"
"I have been extremely busy and probably will be for the rest of the week."
OK. Maybe this is a good chance for me to steer the conversation to meet on Saturday night.
"Right, so I suppose you won’t have time this week?"
There was a slight delay before he replied again as he - I presume - mulled over whether to dance a little and continue with the ’I’m so busy at work’ card or flip around and say he could still make time for me.
"I’m afraid so."
Setting it up for a specific day’s evening was never going to be easy without me suggesting it first but so far I felt it was going OK so I just had to take another small risk.
"Perhaps next week then. Wish you well, Mr. Kwon."
After a little rejection, his message followed immediately.
"How about on the weekend?"
Just as hoped.
"Oh, the weekend is OK for you?"
"Sure!"
"I can’t do Sunday, but Saturday evening is fine for me."
"That also works for me. Anywhere you want to go?"
Right. Almost done with the setup here.
"Apgujeong would be most convenient for me if it’s OK with you too."
"It’d be fine for me too. I will book a restaurant. How about at 6 PM?"
Sounds like he wants an early dinner and early bed.
"Sounds good. Please let me know the place and I’ll be there on time."
"Great. I really have to go now. Work calls. Looking forward to seeing you again."
"Me too. Have a great day."
OK, one - and the most important - task was complete.
After that, just as instructed, I spent some time searching through the web to look for a pension in Yangpyeong. A little weekend getaway for myself, all alone... It might have looked a little weird for some, but I have done this before. Even if the police got on to me, as Shin suspected I would, this would not be out of the ordinary for me as I was able to show that I’d done something similar last year as well.
It was genuinely fun browsing various nice little pensions scattered around Yangpyeong, a popular weekend getaway place for people of Seoul, only about an hour’s drive away, and also had a train connection for people like me.
Lily Garden looked nice in the pictures, with clean and neat bedrooms and a well-maintained beautiful garden for relaxation as the name implied. I submitted a booking request just as Shin told me and got a confirmation email within fifteen minutes.
OK, another task on the list - check.
It was a slow day after that. I just had to kill time until my work was over so I could get my bag stolen on the way back to the subway station. Although Shin did not explain it to me in detail, when I thought about it it made sense. My appointment with Kwon was already arranged so it was OK for me to lose my phone, and that would also make my call record with Shin so far disappear. I was sure they could look it up if they investigated properly with the network provider, but they would need to get a warrant for that. Unless something went wrong though, they probably won’t find enough dirt on me to obtain one.
At this point, I realized that I was getting increasingly more complicit in this premeditated murder. I wasn’t only someone who issued the contract, but I actively lured Kwon to meet on the day that he was going to disappear, as well as creating false alibis and obfuscations preemptively. Breaking the law wasn’t worse than breaking the moral boundaries, but it was like pouring cement into the little dents of footsteps I had taken in my path to wickedness. These marks will never disappear and will be forever left as physical, tangible evidence of what I had done wrong. I was no longer just a girl with dreams and fantasies that were often odd.
With these thoughts still nagging in my mind, I walked toward the Seolleung Station Exit 4. It was a short 10-minute walk and I knew I would get my bag stolen, although it wasn’t exactly clear how. Shin did talk about getting it snatched though, so just to be nice and compliant, I carried it on one shoulder with the other strap hanging loose.
I was quite attentive and wondered if I should show any resistance when someone came to snatch my bag, but it turned out none of this was necessary. Just as I turned the corner to head to the main street, thinking that there was only a short window of time left for this snatcher to come to take my bag, someone bumped into me and said ’Sorry’. But by the time I finished saying ’It’s OK’, I realized my bag was gone and I didn’t even get to see the person who had run into me. I looked around and there was no sign of anyone suspicious around, neither did I see anyone carrying my bag. I did stand around looking a little lost and making surprised faces though, in case there was some CCTV that was pointing at the scene.
It was a little sad I lost the bag I liked as well as my phone with a cute phone case, but I suppose this was a small price to pay compared to what Kwon was about to go through. So I just shrugged it off in my mind and walked toward the Gangnam Police Station.
