Melting Her Cold Heart
Chapter 74. The Distance Between Between Them

Chapter 74: 74. The Distance Between Between Them

Sara had instinctively returned the kiss the moment he deepened it, but as soon as the realization of what she was doing hit her, she froze. She closed her eyes tightly too afraid to even open them, and Alex sensed her discomfort and Noticing her rigid form, pulled back but immediately placed his forehead in hers.

He breathes deeply, his minty breath caressed her skin, reminding her of their shared kiss.

With a slight blush, Sara took a deep breath and once again attempted pushing him off of her, and he succeeded. As soon as their eyes met, she regretted looking at him.

His eyes bore into hers, and the intensity in him had her heart skipping in response to him.

"..." Sara opened her mouth to speak, but no words made it out as she was too conscious of the man in front of her. He could be unpredictable sometimes. He had stolen her kisses one too many times for her to let her guard down.

Sara could not deny the warmth he gave her, and his care for her in his eyes was as clear as day. He even knew her more than she could ever imagine, and they may have probably had a relationship in the past, although she may not remember it but... she could let him in just like that.

What if there was never a shared past? What if she was mistaking him for someone else? What if...?

"A...Alex," she managed to word out his name though in stutters but couldn’t maintain his gaze.

"I am sorry," he spoke and snapped her head around to look at him. "I almost lost control and..." he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "...it won’t happen again," he said and moved away from her. Giving the space that she desired.

"...." She opened her mouth again but could say a word and ended up only nodding to him as she adjusted herself in the seat, finding a more comfortable spot.

The ride back to Opulence Oaks was silent from then on. Alex mostly had his eyes closed throughout the ride, and she wondered if he was offended or just couldn’t bear looking at her anymore because she had rejected him.

Upon arrival, Sara came down from the car before Alex did as he sat still as if he didn’t know they had arrived. Even when Ian went around the car and held the door for him, he didn’t move a muscle and didn’t even open his eyes. Sara wanted to say something, but she held herself back and just walked inside.

She was grateful to him. He had shown how much he loved and cared for her from his little actions. Even how much he wanted her from his gestures, but it was too soon to love again. Or just to open up to a man again. Their little play last night was a mistake she planned not to make again.

"President," Ian called and only then did Alex drop his hand from his eyes and opened them. He starred in the direction Sara had walked into, and he saw her close the door before turning to look at Ian. "Would you prefer a shirt ride around town?" He asked.

Ian didn’t know what happened between the two. One minute, they were all over each other, and the next, they wouldn’t even talk to each other. But he wasn’t in the position to ask. If Alex wants him to know, he will tell him that himself.

"No," Alex shook his head. "I am fine," he said and stepped out of the car.

Having nothing else to say, Ian bowed his head and stepped aside for him to pass.

"Whose car is that?" Alex asked when he saw an unfamiliar car parked just a little further from them.

"I will ask about it," Ian replied. He wasted no time punching a series of numbers and calling them immediately.

Meanwhile, inside the house, as soon as Sara walked in, her step halted. The first thing she noticed were the familiar voices that rang in the air. A crease formed between her brows as those were the voices of people she was very familiar with. She hadn’t told anyone of this place, so how did they know about it?

Following the voices to the drawing room. There. She found her friends sipping on freshly brewed tea and cookies on a tray on the table before them. Mrs Lawson must have just left. Sara thought as she approached them.

"Look who’s back," Jessa was the first to see her. She smiled brightly, relieved to see that their friend was doing fine. The state in which Sara was when she last saw her broke her heart, so seeing her standing, walking, and the color back her face, she was beyond relieved.

"Sara."

"Welcome back."

Sandra and Anne said at the same time as they stood up and rushed to embrace her.

Sara’s heart swelled with happiness as her friends surrounded her. This was what she needed. Her friends with her. Not a man who would end up breaking her again.

"How did you guys know that I am here?" She asked. Her eyes instinctively found Jessa’s giving her a knowing look, but she still asked anyway. That one friend of hers always had a way of finding her no matter where she was.

"It was Jessa who took us here," Anne replied, confirming Sara’s thoughts. She glared at Jessa, who merely shrugged.

"Why didn’t you let us know you were hurt? Do you know how worried we were about you?" Sandra said, and Anne stepped forward.

"Yeah, Sandra was even starting to concoct some dumb assumptions too," Anne replied. indirectly throwing Sandra to the bus.

"Can you even keep a secret or even not mention something as insignificant as that?" Sandra turned to Anne and said in a reprimanding tone.

"It’s the truth, and besides, we have nothing to hide," Anne uttered defensively.

"What assumptions?" Sara asked. The two went silent and made eye contact before they both shrugged but didn’t reply. "And I thought there were no secrets and nothing to hide," Sara said while shaking her head. "How did you find me?" Sara asked, turning her attention to Jessa.

"I called your phone, and Mr Legend was kind enough to let me see you," she said without going into detail. "How do you feel now? You weren’t so good the last time..."

"I am fine, Jess. You have no reason to worry anymore," Sara said.

"So? Where is he? Sandra asked.

"Is he good-looking? Jessa wouldn’t tell us anything about him," Anne asked.

"And what would you do if you saw him? Are you planning to jump on him?" Sara asked, wanting to tease her friends a bit.

"What?! No way. He is yours."

Why would we do that?"

The look of horror in their expression as they spoke had Sara and Jessa laughing.

"We just want to thank him. After all, he saved you when we weren’t there to do so. We didn’t even know you were in danger until now," Sandra said. She was remorseful, but no amount of remorse could do anything now.

"Exactly. Although it would be nice if he is better looking than your ex. That way, he can be even more jealous," Anne said while smiling like a little girl as she imagined Adam would have on his face when he sees Sara with a better looking man and one who is more capable than he is.

Alex, who had approached the drawing, stopped when he heard them ask about him. Their first set of questions rendered speechless, but then, he frowned when he heard what Sara asked in return. He started reconsidering going back, but that changed when he heard their response to Sara. He inwardly nodded his head, knowing she had... unique but honest friends.

He walked inside the silence, following his appearance. Sara frowned as she saw the drastic change in the expressions of Anne and Sandra. Her searcher for Jessa, who nodded her head to the side, and she looked, finding no one.

Then she felt his presence behind her, and she realized what the cause for the silence and change was about.

"Alex," she turned and faced him. A slight blush on her cheeks, but she didn’t falter as she approached him. "These are my friends, they were worried about me and... I hope you don’t mind them being here?"

"No," he said curtly. He noticed how bashful she was, but he didn’t point it out. "Welcome and thank you for checking up on Sara," he said, now looking at Sandra and Anne. "I will be in the study if you need me," he said to Sara, and she nodded her head. "Have fun, ladies." With that, he left.

Although he told her where he would be, Sara noticed the distance he put between them. It didn’t sit well with her.

"That’s him!?" Anne asked, looking between Sara and Jessa. When they both nodded, she grinned. "Nice. He isn’t bad at all. Handsome and rich. All in one."
