Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 40: Keep an eye on her
Chapter 40: Keep an eye on her
"Here is what you requested, President," Kai said, handing his phone to Alex. Alex took it with a plain face, still showing no emotions. "It is surprising who you’d find," Kai said again with a faint smile as he gave a heads up to his best friend and boss.
"...."
Alex didn’t try and just went through the information. His eyes squinted when two names appeared, but then a brow raised when it became centered on one person.
"Let me have their photos," he demanded, and Kai chuckled.
He took the phone and searched their pitiless online before handing it back to him while identifying who was who along the two.
"I honestly didn’t think my sis-in-law would be associated with a shady woman like her, but they are best friends," Kai said with a proud smile. Round for what he had found out.
Alex stared at the photo of the gingered haired woman as he tried to remember where he had seen her. His lips pulled up into a smirk when he remembered her and gave the phone back to Kai. "Keep a close eye on her. Don’t let them catch her either," he ordered, and Kai pulled his brows together in a frown.
Weren’t his orders contradicting themselves?
Alex looked pleased that for the sake of Sara, this woman who was willing to go to such lengths even without letting her friends know about it. It was no wonder Adam was still unable to stop the growing scandal.
"You know she probably still has more up her sleeves. Are you really going to let her destroy your family?" Kai asked, truly perplexed at how his boss was thinking.
Alex gave a soft hum without saying another word. Bewildered, Kai turned to the driver whose gaze had been on them through the rearview mirror, but he quickly averted his gaze when Kai looked at him.
"You must agree with me, right, Ian?" Kai asked but saw him cast a glance at Alex before he responded.
"I believe the president has his reasons. You just have to go along with it," he replied, and Kai sighed, thinking he was the only one thinking like a human should in this situation. But whatever, it wasn’t his family being humiliated by others.
"I give up on both of you. You are just like each other. Sinister," he muttered, and they both raised a brow at him.
"I think secretary Skylar would prefer a different ride," Alex said, and Kai nearly flared up but was able to rein himself in. Ian just gave a simple nod and found a good spot to park the car. "I’ll see you tomorrow," Alex said, asking Kai to leave without being too direct.
"This is noy fair at all," Kai protested, but none of the other two uttered a word. "What if I get robbed. You are dropping me off in the middle of nowhere!" He exclaimed, looking around and seeing only a few cars driving by.
"I am tired, and I need to rest early, hurry up, and don’t make me wait anymore," Alex said, and Kai shot him a sharp glare.
"Don’t be surprised if one day I become your nemesis," Kai said and exited the car. He harshly slammed the car on his way out but quickly turned around, knowing he would be forced to fix it if there was even a little scratch on it. He sighed in relief when he found everything was alright before glaring at the tinted window glass, knowing Alex was watching him.
Ian shook his head when he saw the hard glare and barely suppressed a smile.
"What a child," Alex said as he leaned back into the seat and closed his eyes. "Let us go, Ian."
"Of course," Ian replied, not at all remorseful about abandoning a friend on the road at night. He wouldn’t be the secretary if he couldn’t survive that.
Meanwhile, Kai watched the car drive off without him, and he regretted not waiting until the next morning to hand over his findings. At least then, he would have gone home with his own car. But now....
He sighed and punched in some numbers into his phone as he called someone to come pick him up while he started walking down the road. Standing still until the car arrived would be much too boring.
About twenty minutes later, a black Porsche stopped beside him with the windows rolled down and a smirking face appeared but Kai ignored it and opened the door and got in.
"What did you do this time?" The man asked, seemingly very interested in what happened that had ditched in the middle of nowhere.
"Don’t even start," Kai said in a warning tone.
The other man ran his gloved hand over his hair while laughing. His laughter was so joyous that anyone who heard would stop to take a second look. "You don’t learn, do you?"
"Drive or get out and let me drive. I am tired," Kai grumbled, but it only made the other man laugh even more. "Max..." Kai gave him a pointed look.
"Fine. Your place or the base?" He asked, and Kai was quick to reply.
"My place," the last thing he wanted to have everyone at the base hearing was that he was dropped off by the boss in the middle of nowhere at night and he had to call for help. He won’t live long enough to hear the end of it.
"Scared, I see," Max said light-heartedly. He started the engine and drove off speedily. "Do you think the boss has gone far already? I haven’t had the chance to meet with him since he came back here."
"You know his place, go to him if you want. For now, take me home."
"Is it true that you will be replaced soon? I heard the boss has a new hot secretary. A woman," He asked and Kai had to wonder if he had always been this chatty.
"Eyes on the road." Kai said with irritation.
"You are such a bore," Max said and Kai sighed.
