Melting Her Cold Heart -
Chapter 162.
Chapter 162: 162.
Williams flipped through documents that were inside the file. Once done summing through, he cleared his throat, and all eyes tuned to him and everyone.
"I welcome everyone here today, and thank you all for coming under such short notice. As you all may have already known, the management of Apex Groups will be changing hands but still within the family," he stopped as let the silence drag for a little while and fir his words fo sink in.
"I know you all have many questions to ask, and I assure you that the time for you to ask questions will come, but for now, please bear with us." He said and again, and everyone nodded in synchrony.
"Over the past few years, my grandson, Adam Crawford, had been in charge of the family company till today. Under his management, the company had continued to thrive, but the family, as well as the board, has decided that it is time for a change of hands. I know this is not easy for my grandson to accept, having been the one managing the company’s affairs for so long. So I once again ask for your understanding, Adam. There is nothing personal about the decision as it was what is best for business," Williams said, with his eyes trained on Adam, who silently stared back at him. Trying not to let anything slip through his expression.
Everyone listened with rapt attention, taking note of every word that he uttered, unwilling to miss anything.
"And due to this decision, one of my sons was nominated by the board and he has proven himself to be capable of handling the family business, home and aborad and Apex has been very pleased with his achievements," he then turned to look at Alex, whose face remained blank but composed.
All eyes also turned to him as well as the cameras zoomed in on him.
"With that said, I would like to introduce to you, my youngest son. The child that I had at my old age, Kayden Crawford, who you all have known as Alexander Legend. He will be the one assuming the position of the CEO of Apex from now henceforth." Williams said proudly, and all those who heard him could never mistake the pride in his tone and expression as his gaze remained fixated on Alex. His features softened, and his lips curled up beautifully.
A round of applause followed his speech and the sound cameras clicking as snapshots were taken.
Alex sat there like he didn’t know it was a photo of him everyone was eager to take. His expression never changed, and he never looked at anyone other than his father, and sometimes, his wife, who was seated beside him. It was as if no one else existed.
But when the clicking sound of the cameras continued for longer than he would like, his expression darkened, and he turned to look at the reporters. The snaps siezed almost immediately as if it was planned, and they all took their seats again.
How he was able to command them even without uttering a word amazed those seated at the desk as well frightened them. They could all feel the aura that emanated from him was suffocating. They knee he was good, strong and reliable, but this.... This was beyond what they had expected. To be able to strike fear in them even when he wasn’t even focused on them...
Noticing what had just happened, Sara smiled subtly. How was it that she never felt what these people were feeling now even before they got together again? She asked herself, but that only made her smile more prominent. Leaning towards him, she placed her hand on his own and whispered, "That’s the whole reason they are here, you know? They want to know you, write about you, and have your pictures as proof. Don’t be like that, okay?" she chided softly.
Alex met her gaze, felt her thumb caressing the back of his palm, and his countenance softened immediately, and then he nodded his head. Sara smiled before returning her gaze to the people around them.
Their little exchange didn’t go unnoticed. Not when the air cleared immediately as if it didn’t become stuffy and difficult to breathe just seconds ago.
Williams smiled at that, pleased with what he had just witnessed. Adam got even more infuriated, but like he had been doing the whole time, he kept it all bubbled and bottled up inside of him. He could only glare with his eyes and curse at them in his mind.
On the other hand, Kai wanted to roll his eyes, but then, he knew that this meet would be as good as over much sooner than later, had Sara not stepped in like that.
"Thank you, Father, everyone," Alex finally spoke, his voice coming out smooth and polite but didn’t lack the confidence that he exuded. "I gladly accept this responsibility and assure that I will do my best not to let you all down. Likewise, your faith in me and expectations from me."
His words like that manage to kill what was left of the tension that hung in the air.
"I am glad that you have accepted this responsibility, child," Willimas said. Everyone nodded their heads.
Although Williams had earlier said that there was nothing personal about changing the CEO, everyone already knew that wasn’t entirely the case. Adam’s scandals and other things had led to him being replaced.
"Everyone," Willimas spoke again. "I know many of you still doubt that the young man seated by me right now is a child of mine, but I assure you that he is. Many of you may have already heard of the Crawford child that was raised outside the family. Altnough other rumors and assumptions have flown around for a very long time now, and may have settled and his existence has become only a false story to you," there was silence after his words and smiled and nodded knowingly.
"This is the main purpose of this gathering here today. A change of power in the business wouldn’t warrant a call for all of you but to clear everything doubt and rumors out there. You have all seen him today and know that he is real and very much alive."
A reporter raised his hand, and Williams stopped and looked at him. With a nod of approval.
"Chairman Ceawford, i beg your Pardon if this may come as intruding," he began, and Williams nodded his head. "It is known to all, and by all that, a Crawford has never been raised outside the Crawford residence, so why was he raised outside? Was he never accepted by the family until he had proven to be worthy of the crawford name?"
He sat down after that, but silence stretched as they all wanted for either Williams or any of the Crawfords to answer his question.
"You were right when you said it may come as intruding, for that is a family matyer," Williams said, surprising everyone who didn’t going He said something like. His gaze hardened as he stared at the one who had asked, and he swallowed hard. "But you are pardoned," he added and saw him breathe out in relief.
"Kayden was never rejected by the family. He was only raised by maternal grandfather, Nicholas Legend, under mutual consent. In other words, he was still within the family but away from the public," Williams continued. "I hope that answered your question?"
"Y...Yes, Chairman," the reporter stuttered.
Williams nodded again.
Another raised a hand he looked at her before she stood up. "I have a question for President Legend...Crawford," she said, looking at Alex. She almost sat back down when he looked at her, but knowing how embarrassing it would be to chicken out now after taking the bold step, she chided herself inwardly and asked,
"I have heard frombmy sources that you have been offered the position of the CEO of Apex Groups for quite some time now, but like your older brother, Master Sean, you have always rejected it. So what changed your mind this time, President?"
First Alex’s brows were slightly pulled together as soon as he heard that someone had been feeding them information. They should have only been known to the family and shareholders. His gaze traveled around the table before returning to the reporter lady.
"I just don’t want to have my father stressed any further," was all he said and went silent again.
Everyone looked at him, thinking he would elaborate more, but soon realized he had no intentions of explaining anything.
