Chapter 118: 118. Has No Favorites
Silence followed after Adam’s series questions, taking his time to give the right answers, but Adam thought he wouldn’t answer them. He was about to stand up when Williams called him again.
"Adam," Adam paused half off the seat. "We already discussed this. Alx hadn’t always been the first choice. All of my children were given equal rights to prove their strengths. I do not discriminate within my family, nor do I have favorites. Did you forget that you have been the one sitting as the CEO of Apex?" Adam didn’t reply, and Williams gave a curt nod of understanding. "Dominic also had his chance and quite similar to you, he failed."
A look of surprise crossed Adam’s eyes, but he hid it quickly.
"Sean also had his chance. That was before you did. I had no intention of taking him off that seat, but he stepped down on his own. He said he wasn’t interested in running the family business. His own business was more than enough for him. Kayden was still abroad, yet to complete his studies, the same as you were, and I had to return to managing the company again. You know the rest," Williams said. His eyes never leave, Adam.
"Do you still think I had always had Kayden in mind? I made sure every child born to the Crawfords gets capital to start up any business of their choice when old enough to do so. I gave you yours, and also gave Kayden his. What happened to your business and Kayden’s? The difference is already clear, and I wasn’t the only one watching. The board was also watching."
Adam gritted his teeth when he realized that everything had all been a test. There was never a competition between them because Alex, although he had never been interested, had always been in the lead.
"I know you feel wronged, but this business. I and the board and right now, you know that Kayden is the best person to run the family’s business," Williams spoke, his tone soft and understanding but the bit brought his own downfall upon himself. He may not have good answers to why Alex and Sara were together now, but he could always answer any other questions that Adam threw at him. He was fair in his judgment. He never picked favorites. Alex just happened to be better at everything, and everyone else sucked at them.
"....And Sara, what about her?" Adam was no longer able to argue with him about why Alex was the chosen one, and he was the one who was cast aside.
"There was never any significant importance to your engagement with her besides the fact that I was happy that you were finally thinking about your future. You have had so many women in your life that we’ve all lost count, and then one day, you brought home a woman and introduced her as your finance. Do you think I was the only one who thought highly of her?" Williams gave a wry smile. I had hoped that once you were married, you would change for the better. She was changing you–for the better. But you rejected that change."
Adam remained silent, unable to utter a word. Was that how everyone saw it? Why did he never know about this? Then there’s Olivia. She never liked Sara. Why? He was listed in his thoughts when he heard Williams talk again.
"I don’t know if there had ever been anything between Kayden and Sars in the past. Kayden may be my son, but you know that I didn’t raise him. That is one thing I regret being unable to do, but also what I can not change. I am afraid you and Kayden will have to talk this out yourself."
Adam’s eyes darkened at the call of Alex name. It didn’t matter which it was as long as it was his.
"I don’t want bloodshed within my family, Adam. Don’t ever forget that, because if you do, I will be more than willing to remind you. I am not too old to discipline my children." Williams warned, his gaze became shapra and voice stern which had ashamed sitting up instinctively. "I will call Kayden and Sara here. You can talk then. For now, do nothing."
"What?" Adam couldn’t believe it after all the long talk. Is this how Williams would dismiss him? Tell him to stay still and do nothing.
"You are still bitter, Adam. Until you calm down, I forbid you to apapproachhem," Adam wanted to speak, but Williams didn’t let him. "You are free to leave now."
Adam stared at his grandfather in disbelief. "You can’t be serious."
"I am," Williams replied.
Adam stood up but didn’t leave immediately. He stared at Williams’ face for a few seconds before he turned around and left the study. In the end, he was right after all. He still left the study in anger.
Once he was out of the study, Williams sighed and massaged his temple. When will his family ever regain its peaceful days? He was no fool, and neither was he ignorant to know just how much power Alex had at his disposal. Adam provoking him now might just bring about a repeat of what happened in the past between Dominic and Alex. Williams was not sure they would be as lucky as the last time where all that happened was a scare that had Dominic folding.
"God help this family," he muttered.
Meanwhile, Adam left the manor, heading for the banquet. There was no way he would be waiting until Williams gave him permission to approach Sara and Alex when all he wanted were answers. They both needed to explain themselves. They owed him that much.
Seated behind the steering wheel, he picked his phone and connected to the car’s Bluetooth and Dialed Chris’ phone number, which was answered after a few rings.
"I am on my way to the Romanovs. I want you and Julius there too," he said without even waiting for Chris to say a word.
"All right, we’ll be there to get you out of trouble," he said, but Adam didn’t seem pleased that he assumed he would be getting himself into trouble.
"Just be there," he said and quickly hung up.
