MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA -
Chapter 90: Wooing His Chosen Mate
Chapter 90: Wooing His Chosen Mate
"No," she said, her hand raised, palm facing him. "Hold on, let me process this." Mirian took a step back, her eyes searching his face as if seeking answers. "You’re asking me to be your mate, but...but we barely know each other."
"Live with me in my pack and you’ll know me, you’ll have everything you need," Detroit said, his voice filled with conviction. "Protection, safety, a family...and me." He took another step closer, his eyes burning with intensity. "I’ll take care of you, Mirian. I’ll keep you safe. And I’ll love you, if you’ll let me."
Mirian’s laughter burst forth like a sudden storm, her eyes shining with mirth. "I didn’t say I’m an orphan!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with amusement. "I have parents, I have a pack, and I love my pack. I’m not some lone wolf looking for a place to belong."
Detroit stayed silent for a while, his eyes never leaving Mirian’s face as he absorbed her words. The only sound was the soft rustling of the wind through the trees, and the quiet lapping of the water against the shore of the pond. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and measured. "I’m sorry."
"Wh– what?" Mirian blinked, confused by his sudden apology.
"For misunderstanding," Detroit said, his eyes lowered slightly. "I thought...never mind." He shook his head, "You’re right, you do have a pack, a family. I shouldn’t have assumed..."
"No, wait," Mirian said, her voice soft but urgent, as she reached out to touch Detroit’s arm.
Detroit’s eyes met hers, a question flickering in their depths as he paused, waiting for her to continue. But Mirian pulled her hand back, fist clenched.
Truth be told, Mirian liked him too - really liked him. Had he been a member of her pack, or even just a fellow wolf from a neighboring pack, she wouldn’t have thought twice about exploring the sparks that flew between them. But he was an outcast, a member of the Dark Snow Pack!
How could she betray her pack, the werewolf community, and the moon goddess by mating with an outcast, a wolf deemed unworthy by their laws and traditions?
The very thought sent a shiver down her spine, yet her heart refused to listen to reason. It had already begun to beat in time with Detroit’s, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that their connection was something special, something worth fighting for.
Mirian had a destined mate. Her mate was a high-ranking warrior, but he rejected her because she was an omega. That heartless, arrogant bastard. He was Xavier’s best friend, she remembered the pain and humiliation etched on his face when he realized his destined mate was an omega.
After that, Mirian became the pack’s laughing stock. No one, except for a handful of male omegas, was willing to consider her as a potential mate. And even they, having also been rejected by their high-ranking counterparts, seemed more interested in a pity pairing than a genuine bond.
But Mirian couldn’t muster even a spark of attraction for the male omegas who showed interest in her. Their advances felt more like sympathy gestures than genuine expressions of desire.
And then Xavier, her cousin, entered the scene, claiming her innocence and shattering Mirian’s desire for a meaningful connection. The experience left her feeling hollow, her trust in men broken.
But the man standing before her, his eyes locked on her with a deep respect, was different. He asked for her, not as a charity case or a means to an end, but as an equal, his voice low and genuine as he requested the chance to be with her.
Why did the moon goddess have to make her life so difficult? Why did she pair her with an inhumane destined mate, who rejected her, and now, made her drawn to an enemy? An infidel?
Mirian’s heart felt like it was being pulled in opposing directions, torn between the werewolf’s laws and her own desires.
Was it possible that this spark within her was ignited by the very thing she had been taught to fear and reject: her true mate bond?
But why was her wolf silent in the face of this mess?
"Are you still thinking?" His deep voice cut through her reverie.
Mirian snapped back to reality, her cheeks flushing as she realized she’d been staring at him for who-knew-how-long. Clearing her throat, she began, "I don’t think I can–"
"I can smell it." He cut her off, "You’re attracted to me, and I’m attracted to you. I want to know why you don’t want it."
"Because you’re from the Dark Snow Pack!" she blurted out without thinking.
He frowned, "Why?"
Mirian’s heart skipped a beat. How could he smell that? She tried to regain her composure, but her words tumbled out in a rush. "Because your pack is known for being ruthless and power-hungry. I don’t want to get tangled up in your politics."
He shook his head, "That’s not true. We only take what’s rightfully ours. The rest of the world just sees it as ruthless because they’re weak."
Mirian’s throat constricted as she swallowed hard. "Then why do your people hate the moon goddess?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You don’t worship her. You worship your Alpha."
He shook his head again, his expression unyielding. "We don’t worship anyone. We respect power, and our Alpha embodies that." He paused, his eyes seeming to cloud over as he gazed into the distance. "The moon goddess," he began, his voice low and measured, "represents everything we reject. Weakness, favoritism, submission, blind obedience... Our pack was founded on the principles of strength, self-reliance, and strategic power. We don’t bow to anyone, not even the gods."
Mirian blinked, taken aback by the depth of emotion underlying his words. She sensed a complexity to his pack’s ideology, one that went beyond mere rebellion against the moon goddess. "And yet," she ventured, her voice soft, "you’re here, seeking me out. Doesn’t that go against everything your pack stands for? I worship the moon goddess."
