MATED TO THE SECRET ALPHA
Chapter 141: Horrible Prick

Chapter 141: Horrible Prick

"Not exactly."

Reana raised a brow. "Oh?"

Ryder sighed, "His parents were killed by monsters and he didn’t want to live anymore, so I let him reunite with his family..."

"You killed him," she corrected.

"Technically speaking, no." He said with a hint of defensiveness. Taking her hand into his. "He asked me to end his life, Reana. He was suffering, and I...I helped him." Ryder’s voice trailed off at Reana’s unamused expression.

Reana’s gaze narrowed, her expression unyielding. "That’s still murder, Ryder. No matter how you spin it, that’s still taking a life."

"Right. It is..." he nodded with understanding, then spun around. "I should have waited for the monsters to devour him instead. He wouldn’t have had a grave right now."

"You..." her words caught in her throat. This man cannot be helped. He was tangled in a mess of chaos. The more she tried to unravel the threads of his sanity, the more they seemed to knot.

Reana’s eyes searched Ryder’s face, but all she saw was a reflection of her own confusion and frustration. "Just how much more complicated can you get?"

He smiled cheekily, "It depends on which angle you’re looking at." His eyes sparkled with mischief, and Reana felt a flutter in her chest.

She raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. "Which angle are you looking at, Ryder?" she asked, her voice laced with a mixture of curiosity and wariness.

Ryder’s smile grew wider, and he leaned in, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "The one where everything makes sense, and nothing is as it seems."

"Oh?" she nodded, "Okay. I get it. So, what pack do you belong to?"

At the mention of pack, Ryder’s smile fell and he positioned himself on her lap — head on her lap. "I don’t want to lie to you anymore. But I can’t tell you. Not right now."

"Why?"

"Because, you’ll push me away."

They locked eyes for a while, and then, she sighed. He was so pitiful and insecure.

The more Reana tried to understand him in entirety, the more she realized that she might never truly comprehend all of him. And with that realization came a sense of resignation, a feeling that she might have to accept that this was who Ryder was, chaos and all.

She trusted that he’d tell her when the time was right. For now, she could let him breathe after all the information he’d dumped on her.

But Reana still didn’t believe the claim that he was waiting for her. Perhaps, she looked like his past lover. Maybe...

As for his age... Well, what would he gain by lying? Surely, an ancestor like him wouldn’t belong to just any pack. He may even be a traveler... a lone wolf, perhaps.

This made more sense to Reana. His mate died centuries ago, and as an immortal, he’d been traveling around, searching for her look-alike, then found Reana. His obsession to be with her took over him and he did unsavory things to finally be with her.

Reana didn’t want to admit it, but she envied his dedication, his loyalty, and his unwavering commitment.

Although Reana still had unresolved questions, she didn’t feel distrust about his identity like she used to. The thread that obscured her view of Ryder seemed to be slowly unraveling, and she was beginning to see glimpses of the person behind the mystery.

Now, she understood that his secrets and lies were not born out of malice, but out of necessity, or maybe even self-preservation.

She cleared her throat. "Although, what you’ve done is against the law of our pack, I can turn a blind eye... for now. Provided you don’t hurt any more of my pack members."

Ryder beamed. "My Luna is so kind hearted."

Reana’s face flushed as she looked away, trying not to blush, but the pest wouldn’t leave her alone. He tickled her until she blushed and even laughed out loud.

....

The sun was just rising and the horizon was clouded with fog which was slowly dissipating.

Workers had began climbing the fortress to resume their work for the day, when one of them froze, as he saw something in the distance.

He squinted his eyes, trying to register what it might be, but his eyesight wasn’t too good.

"Hey, what’s that?" He called out to his companion, pointing towards what he saw.

The companion drew closer to him and squinted, trying to get a better look. "Looks like someone’s been strung up," he said, his voice low and serious.

The two workers exchanged a wary glance. Then, the first one shouted to the warriors below. "There’s a dead person hanging from a tree!!"

The fortress was too tall for the workers to shout directly to the warriors below, so their warning echoed across the construction site, drawing the attention of others, who forwarded the message until the warriors heard it.

Soon, a group of warriors made their way to the workers’ location, climbing up the scaffolding or rushing over from nearby sections of the fortress. As they arrived, they took in the scene ahead of them.

The fog was obstructing their view of the figure, but they could see that the person was hanging from a tree branch.

The warriors’ faces darkened, their eyes scanning the surrounding area for any signs of potential threats.

One of them, seemingly in charge, began to give orders. "Go inform Zeta Marcus. We need him here!"

This was the eastern border, which was supposed to be under Xavier, but ever since he was dismissed, there hadn’t been another Delta.

...

Soon, Zeta Marcus arrived, his six–man squad marching behind him – the seven of them were from the Dark Snow Pack, so they were inseparable.

Zeta already heard the gist. Without wasting time, they went through the gigantic metal gate. A short distance after the gate was a portcullis. Beyond that was a drawbridge to cross over the massive ditch... A moat rather.

The fortification was no joke and they were begining to think that the Luna had lost her mind for ordering such a resource-wasting, gigantic walls that made the people below look tiny when you stand atop the walls.

And the gates, three hard meta gates that no werewolves could bring down no matter how hard they tried.

The squad scanned the area as they moved forward, senses on high alert.

As they approached the tree, Marcus’s gaze locked onto the body, his expression turning serious.

His trained eyes quickly assessed the situation as he ordered, his voice crisp and authoritative. "Cut him down."

His team sprang into action, carefully cutting the rope and lowering the body to the ground.

Zeta Marcus knelt beside it, his eyes examining the corpse. This person had been dead for a while. He was starting to rot.

It took him a while to register the person’s identity. Seeing who it was, he sneered, rising to his feet, "A horrible end for a horrible prick. Drag him to the pack."
