Chapter 114: Standing Up For The Omegas
Ryder wondered how Reana was doing. He knew she was barely containing her emotions right now, which also meant that she wouldn’t have an appetite for food, nor would she be able to sleep. So, how could he bring himself to eat, sleep, or sit?
His woman was suffering because of him, and it was only right that he shouldered the burden of that suffering alongside her. Ryder’s jaw clenched. It was all the goddess’s fault.
"Ryder, are you listening?" Marcus’s voice cut through his thoughts.
Ryder’s gaze snapped back to Marcus, his eyes narrowing slightly as he focused on his concerned expression. "What is it?"
Marcus’s eyes searched Ryder’s face, as if trying to read his thoughts, seeing he was alright, he bobbed his head gently and continued. "I was asking if you know of a way to save someone whose neck was injured. Two veins in their neck were severed. The healer said they could lose their vocal cord... if at all they survived."
Ryder’s gaze locked him in place as he folded his arms on his chest, his back leaning on the stone wall. "Mirian was hurt?"
Marcus didn’t answer right away. The thought of Mirian’s state made his anger boil over once more as he clenched his jaw. "I’ll kill that Xavier boy."
"Hm," Ryder grunted softly. "If you must, make sure it doesn’t cause trouble for my Luna."
...
"Luna, Xavier is nowhere to be found," Kira reported as she stepped into the hall, where the council of elders were gathered.
Reana’s eyes turned to Elder Thomas, her voice icy. "Elder Thomas, where is your son?"
Elder Thomas looked like he’d just swallowed a bitter pill, his face pale and sweaty. "I-I don’t know, Luna," he stuttered.
"In my absence, your son has been allowed to wreak havoc and evade accountability. And now, he’s had the audacity to attack my personal servant. Tell me, Elder Thomas, who’s next on his list? Me?"
Elder Thomas’s eyes widened, and he took a step forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Luna, I assure you, Xavier’s actions were not deliberate, but did he avoid accountability. He was–"
"His actions weren’t deliberate, you say?" Reana’s voice was laced with skepticism, her eyes narrowing as she took a step closer to Elder Thomas. "Attacking my personal servant, Mirian, was not deliberate? Tell me, Elder Thomas, what exactly did you have in mind when you said ’not deliberate’?"
Elder Thomas’s face turned ashen, and he swallowed hard before speaking. "I...I didn’t mean to imply that, Luna."
"Does that mean he’d been bullying my personal servant, Elder Thomas?" Reana’s voice was icy, her eyes flashing with anger. "Was that what you meant? That Xavier’s actions were merely a culmination of his ongoing harassment of Mirian?"
"Luna! That’s false!" Elder Thomas protested, his face reddening with indignation. "Xavier would never–"
Reana’s hand shot up, silencing him. "Enough, Elder Thomas," she said, her voice cold and commanding. "I will not be lied to. I will get to the bottom of this, and if I find out that Xavier has been bullying Mirian...there will be consequences. Severe consequences."
She continued, "Now, go find your son and make sure he’s present in tomorrow’s council meeting. I want him to explain himself, lest you say I’m unjust. Do I make myself clear, Elder Thomas?"
The room fell silent, as the weight of their Luna’s words hung in the air like a challenge. Elder Thomas’s face paled further, and he nodded slowly. "I understand, Luna. I will find him."
Reana turned away from the elder, lazily waving her hand as if the sight of him was the least thing she wanted to see. "You are dismissed."
The man bowed and left, his footsteps echoing in the silence.
Reana’s gaze finally refocused on the remaining elders. "Teach your sons and daughters how to behave," she began, her voice low and even, but laced with a subtle warning. "Remind them that they are not above the law, and that their actions have consequences. I will not tolerate disrespect or violence within our pack."
She continued, "The omegas are breathing entities with emotions, just like your pampered children. They’re low-borns, but that wasn’t a choice they made. They serve us even when their bones protest, so they deserve respect, kindness, and compassion, not cruelty and disdain. I expect you all to remind your families of this, and to lead by example."
Reana’s eyes swept the room, her gaze piercing as she emphasized her point. "We are a pack, a family they should rely on, not a hierarchy of oppressors and oppressed."
She didn’t wait to know if her warning sank in, before rising from her seat and striding out. The room remained silent, the only sound the soft rustling of fabrics as the elders watched their Luna depart, lost in thought.
Why was the Luna suddenly standing up for the omegas? In times immemorial, omegas had been bullied and even killed, and the leaders of the pack didn’t care about such trivial matters...
Was this because of her omega lover? Was the Luna trying to raise the omegas’ standing in the pack, just to make her lover more acceptable? The questions swirled in their minds, fueling a mix of curiosity, suspicion, concern, and even disappointment.
The elders had heard Ryder’s great accomplishment from the warrior who was wounded, Kaid. They’d heard that the Luna was still alive, thanks to Ryder killing the monsters. The elders had also heard that the reason the West Wood Pack sent them manpower and resources was because Ryder saved their pack from a monster attack, still, they didn’t acknowledge him.
They couldn’t understand why the Luna would risk stirring up controversy for an omega, no matter how heroic Ryder was. In their eyes, an omega was an omega, and they would never be equal to the alphas and betas who held power in the pack.
Even though Ryder was clearly not an omega, the elders didn’t care. To them, a servant, an omega, they were one and the same.
But one thing had left them confused for days now. Why did the Luna have the servant thrown into the dungeon? Wasn’t she interested in him anymore?
...
"You’ve stood up for the omegas. I’m sure Mirian would be happy," Kira said as she walked beside the Luna.
Reana’s gaze remained fixed on the path ahead, her expression unreadable. "It’s not about Mirian. It’s about what’s right. The omegas deserve respect and protection, just like every other member of this pack."
Kira smiled knowingly. The Luna would never admit it, but Kira knew. She did this for Ryder and Mirian.
"Should I order for his release?" Kira pressed.
Reana suddenly halted, "Are you so free, Kira? If so, go and see how the workers are coming around." With that, she turned and strode away, leaving Kira to wonder if she had overstepped her bounds.
Kira watched her go, a mix of confusion and understanding on her face. She knew the Luna’s was in a foul moods, and she knew when to back off. With a quiet nod, Kira turned and headed in the opposite direction.
...
"Luna, you have a visitor... Miss Vivian," an omega reported immediately she saw the Luna, her voice trembling slightly as she delivered the message with her head down.
Reana arched her brow. She’d been too busy to seek out Vivian and her mother, but since Vivian had presented herself, seeing her might relieve her sour mood a little bit. With that, Reana walked towards the hall.
