Chapter 251: Episode 23.2 Baiting the Innocent Spirit
The Archive is a special part of the Qilin University Library.
It keeps all the original and weathered books and manuscripts that were written during the time of the Great Cataclysm.
Not everyone is allowed to enter its halls, and most of the time, it is left vacant. That’s why when Chairman Mao and the Bai family made their way down, the eerie atmosphere welcomed them. Their footsteps echoed as they slowly descended.
Yanyan couldn’t help but bury himself in his Papa’s arms. The white walls here are so scary!
There are paintings and photographs in simplistic wooden frames hanging on the walls.
One of which attracted the attention of the five-year-old boy. It’s a picture of a gorgeous creature that looked like the eastern dragon, but instead of having a long streamed-lined body that resembled a snake, it has this beautiful body with hooves and deer-like antlers.
Its body is adorned with glittering scales that shine like the most precious gems and diamonds. The creature that seemed to come straight out of dreamland was photographed jogging on a patch of verdant grassy land, looking majestic, peaceful, and inspiring.
’This must be the Qilin,’ The little boy murmured silently. For some unfathomable reason, his initial scare due to the cold atmosphere of the empty halls vanished.
The lone picture of the Qilin put his young mind at ease.
Bai Tingfeng instinctively held his son tighter. "Chairman Mao, I studied in this school for four years, but I never heard anything about a Qilin staying in this school. Not even a rumor."
As the heir of the illustrious Bai family, he personally has a vast information channel.
It’s hard to think that even with his connection, he didn’t hear a thing about a Qilin residing in the university.
"Yeah," Shen Yuan seconded. "I heard that all spirits that came down to this world returned to their realm after the world finally stabilized from the threats of the appearance of dungeons?"
He is familiar with this fact since it stuck in his mind the first time Chairman Mao told him about it. Back then, he was interested in meeting other spirits from this world. He is curious if this world has a connection with the world he came from, and the best candidate to ask such a question is his fellow sagely spirits.
’Qilin, huh?’ Shen Yuan whispered in his heart. Of all the celestials he knows, he can confidently say that they are one of the sagely great spirits who had been around before humans wrote legends. Qilins knows more things than him.
The chances of finding a way to help Bai Tingfeng become bigger once they meet a Qilin. But the critical matter stays the same: is it really a Qilin?
Chairman Mao stopped before a locked room. Beside the door, there’s a fingerprint and retinal scanner. The old chairman didn’t move to unlock the door and instead answered Shen Yuan’s question.
"That is what most people believed, but it is not really a wonder if few stayed in this world. Like humans, they each have their own interests, and some of them found something precious in this world; thus, they decided to stay."
Shen Yuan massaged his chest. Damn, that hit home so good.
"So, this Qilin found something worth staying behind this door?" Bai Tingfeng asked.
Chairman Mao shook his head, "The Archive and the Library aren’t the reason why the esteemed great spirit stayed. It’s the entire school itself. During the Great Cataclysm, the great Qilin is one of the kind spirits who lend their powers to us humans. Unlike the others, they didn’t choose people to give their blessings. Instead, they guided us with our first studies about mana. With their sage knowledge, they helped us develop methods that will help improve the powers of awakeners, invent the prototype of the equipment that measures the powers of awakeners, and build this university from the ground up."
Chairman Mao looked at all the faces of the Bai family, "It’s not an exaggeration to say that this university and the academy beside it was created by the great spirit Qilin."
Shen Yuan said to express his understanding, "Hence, the name."
Chairman Mao nodded, "Hence, the name."
Chairman Mao started inputting his biometrics while his mouth talked without stopping, "The esteemed Qilin roamed the grounds of the university and academy while staying invisible. They love their privacy as much as they love knowledge. That’s why only a handful knows their existence— mainly high-level government officials."
He then turned his eye to Shen Yuan after he checked in the retinal scanner and smiled, "And I happen to be one of the top brasses of the government and the sole spouse of the Qilin Academy’s principal. It’s imperative that I know a lot about the great spirit Qilin. You’re fortunate enough to be given a chance to test your luck to meet them,"
Shen Yuan’s eyes turned into slits. Okay, why does that sound so boastful? Are we going to start bragging about one’s husband?
"Thank you for this opportunity, Chairman Mao." Bai Tingfeng said with all seriousness.
Chairman Mao only flashed a polite smile. Damn, that response was the most natural and most respectful statement one should say in this situation but fuck, he’s looking forward to hearing the sharp, biting reply from Shen Yuan.
The mechanical door of the archive opened, and the cool white light shone on the four people’s faces.
Shen Yuan slightly squinted his eyes to give the room a quick look and see if a Qilin was waiting for them, but there was none— unsurprisingly.
What welcomed them was the woody smell of the polished bookshelves and the earthy scent of paper and ink. The University Archive could be said to be the heaven that most book lovers would call.
It has tall wooden shelves that reach almost the ceiling. All are filled with books screaming "old" and "precious."
Some books are even encased with special protective glass boxes.
This is the first time for Yanyan to see books kept ostensibly. He could only look around, wide-eyed and mouth gaping a small "o."
"Now I understand why we are here. This is undoubtedly the spot where bibliophile Qilin would love to hang out," Shen Yuan declared.
All the explanations Chairman Mao provided align with the traits that he knows about Qilin.
This is the same Qilin who appears in various legends that signal the auspicious birth of the great kings and sages.
This is the same heavenly creature carved into sculpture for good luck and prosperity.
Qilins are pure-hearted celestial beings who would go out and beyond to help those in need. It is almost guaranteed that they will help Bai Tingfeng with his blood curse. However, things aren’t as easy as it sounds.
In the celestial fox spirit’s world, Qilins are considered the "elusive messenger" among the celestials. They will suddenly appear to inform everyone whenever something big is happening in the world and then disappear without a trace once their purpose is achieved.
Even Suki only met them personally a few times. They had a pep talk over a cup of spiritual tea.
It was great.
However, they didn’t warm each other’s butts to call each other bestie.
With a clear understanding of the importance of offering books, Shen Yuan asked Chairman Mao to start quickly. Chairman Mao also didn’t dawdle and found an empty table where he placed all four books.
"That’s it?" Shen Yuan asked Chairman Mao when the old man guided them behind a tall shelf to hide.
"Why? Do you expect me to kneel and pray?" Chairman Mao asked back, causing Shen Yuan to smile. "Even if I do that, it wouldn’t guarantee that we will get the attention of the Qilin. What matters most is the book’s content and your heart when choosing it. Qilins will only meet with the best character."
"Great."
Shen Yuan no longer bantered with Chairman Mao and waited patiently with the others. He is confident with the stealth abilities of his illusion spell, so he uses it to cover their presence. They maintained a healthy distance from the books and waited for the hoofed target to take the bait.
Then, all of a sudden, the stillness of the atmosphere was disturbed by the sound of fluttering pages.
"Ohhh!" Yanyan pressed down his exclamation but failed big time. One of the books they placed on the table is now open, and its pages flying around. It looked so magical for the five-year-old that he couldn’t control his reaction. Fortunately, Shen Yuan’s illusion was powerful.
"Whose book is that?" Shen Yuan asked, to which Chairman Mao promptly answered mine.
"Ain’t it fitting for someone cute and naturally funny gentleman like me to present a joke book?" The old chairman explained, his chest puffed up.
"Yeah. It makes sense," the sly fox spirit smiled. "You’re a joke too."
"You!"
The fluttering of Chairman Mao’s joke book only lasted a minute, and after that, it landed on the table with its front cover facing. Nothing happened, nor did the Qilin appear.
"Seems like our friend didn’t see you as someone exceptional enough," Shen Yuan said to Chairman Mao in a playful tone.
However, the old alpha didn’t look bothered at the result. He seemed pretty chill as he hummed. "No surprise here. That’s my 15th attempt since my first try."
"Chairman Mao..." Bai Tingfeng doesn’t know if he should say sorry. Getting snubbed 16 times kind of hurts if he thinks about it.
"I’m fine. You’re fine! Everyone is fine!"
Well, it seems like Chairman Mao is also disheartened by rejection.
"Whose book is being read next?" Chairman Mao changed the topic.
"It’s mine," Shen Yuan answered, looking at the floating book. He’s got a mischievous smirk playing on his beautiful red lips, and it instantly caught the attention of Bai Tingfeng.
The alpha had a bad premonition.
"Qilins are benevolent spirits with hearts whiter and softer than a cotton fluff. They are untainted," Shen Yuan wiped his smirk with his palm and hummed. "What will happen once their innocent sight accidentally lands on some worldly literature?"
Chairman Mao and Bai Tingfeng’s eyes widened. The two adults who have seen the world realized what Shen Yuan meant.
"Yuan— you!"
"Oh dear, it would be impossible for them to ignore it even if they tried." Shen Yuan said, and right that very moment, Shen Yuan’s book dropped to the table, accompanied by a shy cry.
The empty air materialized a figure of a delicate woman, her bejeweled cheeks blushing.
