Demon spirits are not necessarily evil in nature.

They are either beings who originally had physical non-human bodies who gained intelligence and sentience through cultivation or spiritual beings who took form from the lingering residue of what was once life.

Whatever their origin is, their common denominator is that they possess mystical qualities that couldn’t be found in mortals.

Ghosts, snake demons, yuki-onnas, and fox spirits are just a few examples of these magical beings.

And Shen Yuan... Or Suki, the real name of the celestial fox spirit that Bai Tingfeng calls "my husband," belongs to this crowd.

The only difference that puts him above the rest of the typical demon spirits is that he is already an ascended being. He finally attained the peak evolution that is known in his kind.

That’s why it is only natural for him to notice if there is a demon spirit in disguise around him.

"I’m not sure about that. It could just be a passing low-level demon— hey!" Shen Yuan cut his reply because his husband already hopped out of their car to hunt for the black cat.

"I think you should limit your coffee intake from now on. You’re too alert for your own good! It’s overly exaggerated!"

Assistant Su, Gu Jinpeng, and Yanyan were visibly concerned about what was going on now. Yanyan kept craning his neck toward his father so to reassure the boy that everything was fine, Shen Yuan remained in his seat and rubbed the platinum blonde head of his son.

He is confident about his husband’s strength. Bai Tingfeng alone could kick that little demon spirit’s ass if it is indeed a threat to their safety.

"This is weird. It... suddenly vanished?" Bai Tingfeng didn’t take long to come back with confusion written on his face.

One second ago, he could still see its black tail running across the highway. But when a car passed by, it suddenly vanished without any trace.

"Just leave it be, Tingfeng. If it is indeed what I thought it is then it must have plenty of ways to escape. There’s no use to come after it. Hurry and get inside," Shen Yuan quickly ordered his husband, then poked Gu Jinpeng.

"To be on the safe side. Quickly check the car’s condition. See if there are any disconnected cables or leaking fluids and other car-related whatnots. We wouldn’t know if that little demon did something to our ride unless we checked it."

If there’s one thing that the assistants learn from being in service, it is not wasting time asking questions. Assistant Su obediently pulled over to the side of the road just so Gu Jinpeng could safely check their car.

The other cars of their bodyguards that were tailing them also followed suit.

The family of three remained inside the car while Shen Yuan’s orders were executed.

"Daddy, are black cats bad?" Yanyan suddenly asked.

"Of course not, baby. In the cat kingdom, black cats are said to be very faithful cats. If they find a loving human who treats them well, they tend to stay and be incredibly loving and loyal pets. They are Daddy’s personal favorite next to those silly orange cats."

Shen Yuan looked at Yanyan. It seems like his impulsive action affected his son. This is the least he wanted to happen when they are having an outing.

"Yanyan, always remember this," he started. Aside from the little boy he also caught the attention of the alpha seated on the other side.

"Cats are beautiful creatures. They are good furry babies. However, some bad kitties masked themselves in the litter, and that black kitty could be that masked one."

Yanyan blinked his clear doe-like eyes, seemingly trying to understand his Daddy’s words, "Oh. Okay. Then I will only choose good kitties once I want to have a pet."

Shen Yuan and Bai Tingfeng exchanged a thoughtful look. So, their boy is considering getting a pet now.

It’s not a bad idea, especially in fostering a sense of responsibility.

"Well, you can tell us if you want to adopt a pet. There are a lot of animals who don’t have a home," Bai Tingfeng ruffled the platinum-blonde hair that resembles his husband’s. "We could be their family."

"Really?" Yanyan hopefully looked at his Daddy.

No discussion is needed. Shen Yuan is already defeated by those puppy-like eyes.

Frankly, he wanted to say that he was okay with it as long as it was not a dog. His whole kind has a long and sordid history with dogs. It sounds unbelievable since scientifically speaking foxes and dogs are under the same Canidae Family.

But just like what most people say, the family could be either your biggest supporter or biggest hater.

And unfortunately, the latter condition best describes fox spirits and dogs’ relationships.

’Well, I don’t mind taming a hater if it’s for the sake of Yanyan’s happiness so fuck it,’ Shen Yuan thought as he ultimately nodded his head.

The good news delighted the five-year-old and he wanted to exclaim a celebratory "Yehey!" but before he could finally do that, a knock suddenly sounded on Shen Yuan’s side of the door.
