Marriage Alliance With The Lycan Monarch -
Chapter 28: Only A Cold
Chapter 28: Only A Cold
I fixed him with a suspicious look. The only way I can believe his words is if Talia didn’t reveal my secret.
Drevon unfolded his arms and rested his elbows on his thighs. "How long are you going to remain on the floor?"
"Why? I’m perfectly comfortable here," I opposed. The floors were strangely warm, and I had no intention of leaving them and going back into that bed with him.
"You’re still unwell, and the ground is too hard for your body. Come to bed."
"Is there something else you need, my liege?" I questioned ignoring his offer; there was no way I’d fall for his sweetness, not anymore. "If not, please leave, I’ve already awoke uncomfortable because you were the first thing I saw this morning."
"Uncomfortable? I thought it was the fever," he chuckled.
"Both," I gritted out.
"Pardon me for that, I’ll ensure your waking up will be comfortable from now on."
"Such charming words, my liege."
"Do I note sarcasm in your tone?"
"Oh no!" I drawled. "It’s a compliment, I don’t give those easily."
"Then I shall look forward to more compliments." There was a glint in his eyes that spelled nothing good.
Ugh! How long does he intend to remain here?
"T-Talia!" I pitched, begging the gods that she was at the door. I kicked to my feet and scurried to it, ignoring as my body dragged me down.
"Eloise, do not strain yourself!"
"Why are you worried about me?" I faced him just when he rose to his full height, and I honestly wished he remained sitting; there was only so much my poor neck could take.
"Should I not be?"
"I see no reason you should be."
"Eloise," he began in a far softer tone. "You were extremely sick for days, bedridden the entire time."
"It was just a cold, which I got from riding in the rain. It’s perfectly normal for humans."
"Yes, but you—"
I took a step back when he came closer, and the silence was loud. Drevon only watched me and did not attempt to move again, which I was thankful for. The more distance the better, I can think properly then.
"Again, my liege, may I ask you to leave?" I broke the silence.
"I’m afraid that’s going to be difficult because this is my bedchamber."
My mouth went agape. I was so busy dealing with Drevon that I hadn’t noticed how majestic it looked. Having to gaze upon it in daylight was far more breathtaking.
Luxury upon luxury, and it made my head spin. Was there anything less expensive around here?
"Then I shall leave, or am I confined to your quarters?"
"Depends," he amused. "You’re my wife, should you not share your husband’s space?"
Tsk!
"Certainly, but I’m but an ornament you brought as a souvenir. Should I be dressed up like a doll and lie pretty on your bed?"
"Ah...this is about the meeting with the Dowager?"
"No, it has nothing to do with it. I just finally understand my situation far too well."
I didn’t allow him to speak as I grabbed the doorknob and opened the door. I hastened out, ignoring the knights stationed like a war were about to happen.
I heard Drevon call for me, but that only increased my desperate endeavors to get as far away as possible from him.
I spotted Talia waiting in a corner. I seized her arm and dragged her with me, while casting a long glance behind to make sure Drevon wasn’t coming.
"You’re awake," she said in relief.
"I called for you!"
"The monarch ordered that no one should enter."
"Why on earth was I in the monarch’s chambers?"
"Do you want me to be honest?"
"Yes. But first, where are my quarters, or am I subjected to spend every waking moment with crimson eyes upon me?"
Talia cleared her throat. "This way."
She led me to the next turn, in front of dual doors, and the moment we stepped in, she closed the door behind her.
This had the same space as Drevon’s, which looked as if it could fit an entire hall, but it was less fancy.
I walked to the bed and sat, trying to catch my breath. That little walk made my body weak, and my stomach ate itself as uncontrollable hunger followed.
"I’ll have breakfast brought in immediately, you haven’t eaten anything for days." She walked to the door, but I stopped her.
"You said you would be honest, so tell me. Does he know about my ailment?"
She didn’t turn to me and just lingered there.
"Talia?"
"No, I told him it was only the cold, and he believed me."
I nodded slowly. There was no reason for Talia to lie because she was more dedicated to keeping my secret. I trusted her in that aspect.
"I shall bring breakfast."
~•~
I stood with arms folded, my fingers tapping on my arms as prickling frustration clawed through me. "Are we having some sort of event?"
"I thought the same too."
"Talia!"
She shrugged. "I went to get breakfast, how was I supposed to know it’d be this?"
I growled, looking over at the absurdly large amount of food spread out on the table. All kinds of variety I can’t count, and more so, a separate platter with all the pastries I had eaten at breakfast with Drevon, and I mean everything.
This was his doing.
"And were dresses on the menu too?" I asked as we both turned to the bed filled with more dresses than I have had in my entire life.
"Others are waiting on standby; this is just the tip of the iceberg." Talia walked and opened a box, and I gasped.
"Are those pure golds?"
"Yes," Talia said breathlessly.
The jewelry wasn’t even on the same level as the ones my stepmother and sister exhibited.
"This is just the first box."
I almost lost my footing, and I held onto the table for support. "Has he lost his mind?!"
