Chapter 27: This Must Be A Dream

Chapter 27: This Must Be A Dream

• ELOISE •

Gods! I feel horrible. My entire body felt like it had been crushed by debris, and the rest of me was completely dead. I don’t want to exist, not anymore. And what is that gods awful bitter taste in my mouth? Did I eat a horse dump or something?

I grimaced, tasting my mouth before swallowing whatever flavor that was, feeling too lazy to get up and empty my stomach.

Why me? I mentally whined, moving my head to the side. My toes squirmed, and then my fingers followed, testing my body for any response, and there was none. I was completely numb. Ah...not again.

It was always like this when I’d stayed on the bed for far too long. I wish the gods would take my soul now; I’ve had enough of this miserable existence.

I allowed myself to succumb to the unusual warmth of the bed.

I think a long time passed before I awoke again. I could feel my body now, and the energy slipped back in just enough for me to turn to my side.

I flickered my eyes open, hoping to be blinded by the light, but a shadow was upon me. I blinked, not once but twice, and then closed my eyes momentarily and opened them again.

This was surreal.

Drevon lay next to me, molten crimson eyes with a dim glow. One elbow sank into the bed, his head resting against his palm.

I blinked again. I haven’t woken up, have I?

Gods! I was so out of it, and now my dilemma came with an unwanted dream. Just seeing him caused a rush of spiking sensations in my chest. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad dream after all, because I got to do what I couldn’t in real life.

In a heartbeat, I grabbed his collar and thrust him forward. "Some nerve you have, you two-faced viper!" I hissed with a dark edge to my tone. "Lying there, staring at me with charming eyes. Of course, how wouldn’t you? Your words are just as sweet as your eyes, but I won’t fall for it. Do you hear me?"

I fixed him with a pointed stare. "If I had the chance I’ll strangle you with my bare hands and dump horse shit on that handsome face of yours so that I can make you hideous as you deserve! You hear that? Handsomeness doesn’t fit a man like you."

My fury grew because I thought of him as handsome. "Your goddess was so kind that she sculpted you like some god, but do not think looks like that get you leverage to toy with me."

"Why horse shit? Is strangling me not enough?" he asked casually, a breathless grin taking over his lips and displaying his perfectly white teeth.

I froze, like a cold barrel of water splashed on my face, and I finally woke up. No. I’ve been awake!

No, no, no! That can’t be. I shut my eyes in hopes that when I opened them, he would not be here. Please gods, please gods, please gods! I mentally chanted.

I opened one eye to check, but he remained there, beaming like I held the key to treasures.

But then his features morphed into an expression of extreme worry as my breathing hitched. "Are you alright? Does it hurt—"

I screeched, using my palm to send a hit to his jaw to repel him. The rest of my movement was jerky; I’d gotten up too fast, and I found myself falling off the bed.

However, Drevon quickly grabbed my hand and yanked me into his arms. "Don’t be so reckless, you just recovered!" he scolded.

"A dream, this is a dream, right?" I pressed my palm on his chest and pushed so that I could see him. "You’re a dream, right? Please say you are."

At this point, I begged it to be.

He chuckled softly, the mere sound dispatching vibrations to my body. "Why do you keep saying that? I’m not a dream, Eloise. I’m really here." He assured me, taking my wrist gently and moving my hand to his chest so that I could feel his heartbeat. "See?"

I lost it again, pushing off him, and I hurriedly crawled off the bed and dropped to the ground with a loud thud. Ow!

"Eloise!"

"Stop!" I stretched my hand out. "Stay right there and don’t come any closer!"

He did as I said, sitting right back.

"First off, my liege." I ground out with a frustration worth thousands. "May I ask politely what you’re doing in my room?" I allowed my eyes to drop.

Drevon was on his linen shirt but that damn material made me spiral even more. If he’s so leisurely dressed, does this mean he’d been in bed with me the whole time?

Drevon barked a laugh, so loud and carefree that it made my insides fuzzy.

"I was hopelessly worried about you for days to no end, yet the moment you wake up, that is the pressing question you ask?"

Days? Worried?

Suddenly, my brain finally found the decency to recall everything and it came clapping like thunder.

After I left the Dowager’s wing, armed with semi-victory and cluttering rage, my body broke down on me. Oh no.

Garrick, he saw...more importantly, he might know that I have an ailment. Dear gods, no!

Garrick was Drevon’s Beta; he must have told him everything. I shouldn’t have been so careless. Nonetheless, there was still a way to avert this. He cannot know I have an ailment.

I cleared my throat. "Accept my apology, my liege. My fever must’ve gotten to my head, and I’ve acted unsightly. Whatever happened earlier was just fuzziness."

Drevon folded his arms, and I hated how his biceps bulged and made the poor material constrict.

I audibly gulped, forcing my gaze back to his eyes. Drevon just watched me, and with the bidding time, my heart almost leaped out of my chest and spared me from this existence.

"Yes, the fever must have gotten to your head," he agreed. "Everything you said was completely the state of your distress."
