Elya augmented her dagger-sized broad sword with the full output of her Force Field and ensured it passed through whatever defenses the enemy had on him. The blade sunk into his body like a shovel sinking into wet sand.
Before gravity could do its thing, she pulled the blade out and stabbed it two more times, both of which undoubtedly went through the hooded man’s spine.
Mark didn’t see the System message so he believed the kill went to his ginger-haired squadmate. The ground shook a little as Ben slammed it with his fist. A few meters away long orange spikes sprouted out and forced back another band of red hoods.
"Move!" Franco instructed while spinning the sickle on his right. The chain connected to it reached more than six meters long when he suddenly swung it like a whip.
The lash on the asphalt gave birth to a wave of green flames that spread out like a wave. Franco spun around and whipped the chain again. Walls of fire rose to the sky and blocked the assailants from advancing.
Alex raised his shield and lowered his posture. Tendrils of yellow electricity danced around his body and his blonde hair turned sharp and spiky. He lunged forward, clearing a dozen meters in a single step. His golden shield bashed everything that happened to be in his way sending it flying to the sides and into the ghastly green flames.
Franco took off running after him and Mark followed suit. The difference in speed couldn’t have been more apparent with the gap between them widening with each step.
A massive creature blocked the path flanked by Franco’s flames. The hood and cloak covering its body said it was another one of the red hoods, but with its height reaching above three and a half meters and the width of its shoulders being far from that of a human one could tell it wasn’t just a large man.
The strange creature was carrying a howitzer like it was a toy. He planted his feet firmly into the ground, leaned forward slightly, and pulled the trigger. A shell shot out from the cannon and the recoil only shook his body slightly.
Alex met the projectile head on and the force of the explosion once again forced him into a halt. As the smoke enveloped his body, Franco arrived at his position and leaped high in the air, the sickle on his right spinning over his head like the rotor of a helicopter.
He whipped the chain and the sickle came swinging down. The massive enemy jumped back to dodge it but the chain increased in length and caught up with him. Realizing he couldn’t escape, the massive red hood raised his weapon and used it to block.
With a clang, the chain struck the long barrel of the howitzer and was about to coil around it. That was when Franco raised his hand and whipped the chain again sending a neon green wave through it.
The sickle at its end seemed to gain a life of its own as it shot toward the massive red hood like the head of an angry viper. Perhaps sensing that it couldn’t be evaded, he let go of it and of the cannon and leaped back, leaving it to be sliced into pieces by the green chains and blade.
A streak of yellow lightning flashed beside the destroyed weapon just as it hit the ground. Its owner had retreated a dozen meters in a single leap but the lightning caught up with him before he could land.
He spun around and kicked at him at it but caught only air. The lightning itself was nothing more than an after effect and its source had already passed him, the blade it carried having landed a strike on his body.
Halting in midair, Alex made one sharp turn then another and shot in the direction he first came from, slashing at the enemy before landing at the same spot he took off from.
"That’s a tough one..." he stabbed his weapon into the ground and exhaled, his breath crackling with thin sparks.
The strikes from his lightning-infused claymore -the weapon he switched to before that last charge- were by no means weak. His opponent had just made the smart choice to fully activate his Force Field allowing him to block the attack while taking minimum damage.
"I will get him."
Elya had a wide grin on her face as she was about to step forward but a solemn voice stopped her.
"No, I will handle him."
Lara glanced at Mark as if to ask for permission, and when he answered her with a nod she walked to the front of the formation while Alex took her place. Elya was about to complain when a large hand fell on her head and silenced her.
"What’s this?" A guttural voice came from the massive red hood. "That’s one strange costume you got there, little miss."
Lara didn’t bother to reply and summoned her halo. A pure white glow enveloped the head of her spear, extending it into a longer blade.
"Oho... now that’s a surprise..."
Her opponent upped his guard significantly. Specs of light flickered above his head and in a couple of seconds, a red halo formed over his head.
"This is the first time I see a Peace Keeper not afraid to show their Runes." He said. "Guess you stand out in more than one way."
The shadows cast by the surrounding flames danced to the silent tune. As if to interrupt it, the maid took a step forward and brought her spear down drawing a white arc that shot out toward the red hood. Evading it with a single step to the left he then lunged forward, leaving behind a small crater.
Lara took off to meet him halfway, spinning her spear and shooting two more white arcs, cutting nothing but the road and the nearby buildings. The massive red hood kept his posture low and nimbly dodged the arcs. He reached down and picked something off the ground then accelerated without a warning, crossing the remaining distance between him and the maid in an instant.
