Chapter 116: Keep running.
Chapter 116: Keep running.
With no time to ask Mark saved his question and followed after Franco and Alex. No sooner had they stepped out of the alley than they ran into another group of strangers. This time, however, they weren’t the enemies in red hoods.
They numbered four, and though their clothes differed greatly, the emblems on their chests revealed their identity as Peace Keepers.
"They’re dead," Franco announced right away and pulled at his jacket as if to point at the emblem on its left breast.
The one leading the other group looked at them one by one, did a double take when he saw the silver-haired maid, then left after nodding his head.
The emblem on the uniforms Peace Keepers wore wasn’t just a simple decoration; it served as an identification badge that helped them recognize each other and for that reason, they’re made using a special method that can’t be replicated.
Each member had only one they had to carry on them at all times. Mark received him before leaving the headquarters and the same went for Lara, though in her case it was a badge that could be attached to an apron.
Bullets rained on them from above and Mark instinctively raised the output of his Force Field. A massive orange hand manifested to their left and blocked the volley of bullets. Mark was about to glance behind him when he heard the big guy utter a single word.
"Aim."
The idea got through right away and Mark pointed his AR-15 at the figures standing on the nearby roofs. He didn’t bother counting them, and when the orange hand moved away he pulled the trigger and returned the fire.
As they were on the move he had no way to check whether any of his shots had landed, and since the System wouldn’t tell him anything unless someone died he would only be alerted if he landed a headshot.
’As if they would die so easily.’
Mark was already over the idea of shooting at humans and could only wonder if that was Ramsay’s goal from their little trip to Stonegate’s prison. Not that he needed that experience to be fine with shooting at the red hoods.
Just knowing that they were connected to the b*tch who almost punched his guts out was enough to fill him with murderous intent. Thankfully he caught himself before his Soul Pressure started permeating. The last thing they needed was for him to draw the enemies’ attention by flexing his Knight Rank soul.
The gunmen targeting them were about to fire another volley when blue arrows pierced their bodies and bloomed into massive balls of azure flame. Ramsay was on a nearby roof as well and with him providing cover the others could focus on the road ahead.
The four Peace Keepers ahead of them clashed with another band of red hoods. Alex continued running instead of stopping to help them and so the others did the same.
’Avoid unnecessary clashes.’ Mark reminded himself. ’Keep running toward the target.’
In the corner of his eye, Mark saw a red hood cleave a Peace Keeper in half only for another one to smash his body with a massive hammer. Its wielder didn’t get the chance to breathe when two spears impaled him from behind.
In another corner, a red hood leaped backward as spheres of flames condensed in his palms. He swung his arms and the spheres took off in opposite directions before converging on a single point and colliding with the shield of a charging Peace Keeper.
Men in blue uniforms huddled behind a car as bullets blasted it from the other side, one of them risked returning the fire only for his brains to splatter.
In such chaos, one would think it would be difficult to proceed uninterrupted, but surprisingly nothing that could slow them down appeared for quite some time.
That wasn’t to say that the number of enemies was lacking. It’s just that the red hoods seemed to move in parties of three making it a bad idea to attack a group of six with a seventh covering them from a distance.
Whenever more than three enemies locked onto Squad Four blue arrows would rain down and force them to scatter.
Ben took care of blocking any ranged attacks directed at the squad, be it mundane bullets, bolts of lightning, or balls of fire. The massive illusory hands he used to do so were created by the futuristic gauntlets he wore.
A sharp whistle sounded as something cut through the air at imperceptible speed.
Alex came to an abrupt stop and raised his shield, his feet digging into the ground as he was pushed back a couple of steps. Whatever it was that he blocked, the impact caused by it reverberated through the surroundings and blasted violent winds.
Before he could spot it, Mark noticed his maid pull her right arm back before flinging her spear creating a small sonic boom. An explosion rang out in the distance and the spear manifested in Lara’s arm the next instant. Going by the slight frown on her face it seems that she had failed to strike her target.
Their momentary stop had caused them to become a target for several bands of red hoods. Mark aimed at the closest among them and rained bullets forcing them to raise the output of their Force Fields.
Just when they thought the bullets had stopped, blue arrows pierced their heads in the same instant. Only one of them reacted fast enough and parried the arrow but the following explosion blasted him away.
Ben swiped with his left hand and smacked one of the enemies with the illusory palm it created, sending him flying into one of the groups heading their way.
A red hood got close enough to swing at Elya who blocked with her broad sword. The bastard put some behind his weapon intending to use his larger size to overwhelm the petite girl, but the blade blocking him suddenly vanished causing him to stumble toward the tip of a sickle swung at him from the side.
Ducking at the last moment, the red hood evaded the sickle only for his forehead to bump into the barrel of an AR-15. Mark pulled the trigger without hesitation, and as if to ensure they got him, Elya jumped up and stabbed down with her broad sword which had shrunk down to the size of a dagger.
