"I guess the battle is over."
A large slab of obsidian stone fell to the ground with a subtle thud. Ben clapped his hands together as if to remove any dust clinging to them. Franco stepped out from behind him, ruffling his long hair as he heaved an exasperated sigh.
"That pipsqueak sure doesn’t know when to hold back."
"Oh," The big guy gasped and turned to look at him with surprise. "Someone has a death wish."
The impact from Elya’s last attack had scattered the venom from the Demon’s territory, creating a deadly rain shower. Hiding from it was easy enough, but toxic fumes wafting in the air were difficult to avoid, which forced them all to wear gas masks.
The big guy had anticipated such a situation and made preparations beforehand. He had wished it wouldn’t come to it, but knowing their petite companion, it was only a matter of time.
"Fucking shrimp stole."Ramsay landed a short distance away. "And I warned her not to steal my kill."
His face was covered by a gas mask as well, but the tone of his voice spoke of his annoyance.
"Two funerals in a single day." Ben laughed. "I have to make preparations!"
The Sergeant clicked his tongue and was about to turn away when he noticed a certain someone whose foul mood rivaled his own.
"What’s up with him?" He gestured to the newcomer with his chin.
"The lad just learned how to increase the Soul stat."
"Seriously..."
Before long, Alex and Elya returned as well. The latter looked to be in quite a good mood after killing the Demon Rank Fallen.
"Hey! The hell were you thinking!?" Ramsay blew up the moment he saw her. "We agreed this one is mine!"
"We agreed on nothing~" The petite Peace Keeper puffed out her chest. "First come, first served!"
"You know I needed that AP! I hadn’t made any progress in the last two years!"
"Too bad~ I got about 12K just from this one alone~"
Ramsay gritted his teeth as the veins on his head began to bulge.
"Don’t do it," Ben said, but his words went in through one ear and exited from the other.
Turning up his nose, Ramsay said in an even tone.
"Too bad it won’t add a single centimeter to your height."
Elya looked up and stared at the Sergeant. The gas mask hiding half of her face should have made it difficult to tell what kind of expression she had on, but even with it in the way, there was no restraining the smugness oozing from her expression.
As the confusion spread across the members of Squad Four, Elya held up a hand with her palm facing upward. A moment later, a purple glass orb fell into it. The surrounding atmosphere suddenly changed.
"An S grade, by the way." She said in a proud tone.
"No way..."
The insult Ramsay threw in his anger was deflected, coming back to deal him a devastating blow. That exchange ended in Elya’s total victory.
"Man, I’m getting jealous." Alex shook his head and sighed.
"Seriously?" With his arms crossed, Franco leaned down to get a better look. "Now I’m starting to have regrets..."
Mark who had been wallowing in depression raised his head and noticed the item Elya was tossing up and down. His curious gaze caught her attention right away.
"Feast your eyes, Newbie!" She raised the orb high above her head. "This is one of the rarest items even in the Overworld! An S grade Ability Core!"
If she was expecting some kind of reaction from the youth, disappointment was all that awaited her.
"What’s that?" The word sounded familiar but he didn’t remember where he heard it.
"You don’t know about Ability Cores?"
"He doesn’t know shit." Ramsay scoffed.
"C’mon Sergeant, don’t take your anger on the lad." Ben crossed his arms and rebuked. "He barely had his System for a week. Of course, he wouldn’t know what an Ability Core is."
Though a lot had happened recently, the truth was that only six days had passed since Mark’s Awakening. Worse still, since he spent half of that time unconscious. The experience he had accumulated hardly moved past the basics of the basics.
"If he doesn’t know, let me enlighten him," Resting her free hand on her waist, Elya puffed her chest and spoke, "An Ability Core is an item that contains the Abilities of the creature it came from."
"A water bottle is a bottle that contains water," Ramsay added with a sigh.
"Sheesh Ramsay, just drop it already," Franco said. "Nothing good comes from being salty."
"He’s a fucking weeb. You think he hadn’t deduced that much from the name alone?" Turning his glare to Mark, the Sergeant continued. "Most people have a limited pool of Abilities to choose from, Mr. Level 5. The only way to learn new ones is by absorbing these orbs."
Mark drew his brows together.
"You aren’t the only one in a bad mood here. You should stop being an ass."
"You heard him, Sergeant." Ben giggled. "Stop being an ass."
"Tche..."
Still pissed, Ramsay turned around, took a step, and suddenly disappeared. Mark couldn’t care less about him so he turned to the others intending to ask for a more thorough explanation. Franco was quick to notice and answered before he could ask.
"Remember what I said earlier about unlocking Abilities?"
"Yeah?" Mark raised an eyebrow.
"Since most people can only learn a limited set of abilities each time they Rank up, the only way for them to learn abilities outside of those they chose is to absorb an Ability core," Franco explained. "Some contain singular Abilities, others entire Paths. Since this one is an S grade, I’m guessing it contains most of the Scorpion King’s Abilities."
"There is definitely a high-speed regeneration Ability in this baby!" Elya rubbed the orb against her cheek. "Should I use it? Or should I sell it?"
"I say you should sell it," Alex said. "You won’t be making use of the poison-type Abilities anyway."
"Alright! I’m treating you all to a great meal when we get back! Except for that idiot! He could go eat shit!"
"So he did get to you," Franco remarked.
"I may forgive but I never forget!"
They began discussing the restaurants they would be visiting once everything was over. Mark didn’t pay them as he had just remembered where he had seen the word "Core" before.
Pressing the Y button on his imaginary controller, he summoned his Inventory and scrolled past the items he gathered from his apartment, going all the way down to the bottom of the list.
Seeing the item he was looking for, he selected it and pressed X to see its details.
[Item: Malarak’s Core.
Type: Ability Core.
Grade: SSS
Description:
A detailed recreation of Malarak’s Soul. Contains all Paths and Abilities learned and developed by Malarak of the Dark Mountain.
(Ability List)
]
As he read through the item details, Mark was glad he had the gas mask on. It made hiding his expression much easier and without it the others would surely have noticed the grin that had replaced the frown he wore for a while now.
Focusing on the (Ability List) at the bottom caused a new window to appear. Not only was it big enough to fill his field of vision, but it also had a scrollbar showing that there was more to see beneath what was already displayed in front of him.
A clap snapped Mark back to reality, Making him smash the B button and close the System screens.
"Alright everyone," Franco said. "Let’s leave the talking for another time. We will have to call the big guns to shut that hole so there is no point in us lingering around."
To enter this world, King Scorpion had to expand the category E Dimensional Rift, turning it into a category B. The drones Mark was given couldn’t seal something of that size so someone else had to come and finish the work.
"Ah..."
Mark let out a gasp that drew everyone’s attention to him. Being the enter of attention made him feel bad about sharing the bad news, but it was only a matter of time before someone else noticed.
"The trucks." He said. "We left them near the Rift..."
