Chapter 86: Episode 23 Drifting_2
The entire stone bridge emitted a "crackling" sound, turning completely reddish-brown, and the surface of the bridge appeared with numerous small holes, densely packed like a sponge. With a snap, the red part in the middle of the passage bridge detached from the bridge base and fell straight towards the magma below.
The belated Lightning Intense Flame only struck the land on the other side of the Molten River, blasting a huge pit, with rubble and dirt thrown into the air. Instantly, the area became engulfed in dust, making it impossible to see anything clearly.
"Hahaha! So smart. Suicide is actually more pleasant than being tortured by me. This time you were lucky!" The snake-man priest stopped his purple worm mount, gazing at the broken stone bridge from afar.
What he didn’t expect was that with just a tilt of his head, he saw downstream of the lava flow, on a large red stone slab, those three he thought were destined to die, were leisurely sitting on it.
The mage waved hand at him, "Goodbye," Lynch showed a friendly smile, his expression like saying farewell to a close friend, speaking slowly.
The snake-man priest almost exploded with anger, stomping on the purple worm’s skull, hurriedly chasing after them. Helplessly, after the recent attack, the priest had delayed for a while, and the distance had long been widened. Besides, now the mage and others were on the lava flow, the purple worm wouldn’t dare swim in the magma no matter how thick its skin. By the time the priest chased to the eyes and sides, it was already too late.
Thus, Lynch and his group drifted further safely, gradually leaving the cave, away from the snake-man’s pursuit.
"Lynch, you really are something! You even found a way to escape in such a predicament." Deluo put down the greatsword, lying comfortably on the stone slab.
Nimo stroked the surface of the stone underfoot with his hand, asking puzzledly, "Lynch, what’s going on? Why hasn’t this stone been burned?"
"Very simple, this stone is volcanic rock, it’s solidified from lava, how could it be burned? Moreover, the small holes created when gases escape during cooling make this kind of stone very light. So, not to mention magma, it can even float on the water surface just the same."
"But, but..." Nimo tilted his head, "Where did this volcanic rock come from?"
"Naturally, it was transformed by the mage! What’s so strange about that?" Deluo stretched lazily, saying casually.
Lynch smiled and didn’t bother to explain further. Since seeing Nimo’s uncle, Moni, that special skill of turning copper powder into an iron spoon, he constantly considered the principles behind this magic, pondering how to permanently change the properties of objects with arcane skills. It wasn’t until he later read the "Creation Law" that he slowly understood this skill. Previously, he had experimented with transforming small objects, but today, transforming such a large stone slab’s nature from granite to volcanic stone was also an unavoidable adventure, but the adventure succeeded.
"But anyway, regardless of how shabby we were, we did successfully leave, didn’t we?" Nimo seemed very happy. After all, this was his first adventure away from home, his first encounter with such a thrilling moment, and also the first real cooperation between the three of them.
"Yes, the only pity is not having roasted snake to eat. You know, that would be delicious!" Deluo smacked his lips, winking at Nimo.
"Forget it! I don’t want to eat that thing." Nimo now got goosebumps just hearing the word "snake".
"Hahaha, Nimo, you still need some training..." Deluo laughed heartily, and Nimo laughed along. It was a kind of relaxing laughter, for those who escape death, it’s either howling in tears or laughing heartily.
Yet Lynch dared not relax for a moment, though his body was exhausted and his heavy left arm left him unable to move an inch, he still kept his eyes wide open, using his Eye of Insight to scan the surroundings—after all, they were still drifting on the magma.
Though the rock beneath them wouldn’t be burned, it didn’t insulate the heat either, and the power of the molten lava continuously roasted the three sitting upon it, forcing them to stand up to prevent getting burnt on their backs or buttocks.
After leaving the lava river cave, they had turned into a molten lava channel, where the temperature was unusually high. In the semi-enclosed environment, the hot air couldn’t escape: it was like being inside a heated oven, and Lynch and the others were like the meat being roasted.
Lynch clung tightly to Deluo, hugging Nimo close. A spell to protect against fire Element damage was surrounding them, absorbing the heat as much as possible, enduring it. Yet even so, the scorching air still enveloped their fragile bodies, making them feel short of breath.
Fortunately, the channel had an end. After about half a mile of agonizing endurance, the three finally left the suffocating lava pipeline, with the cold and hard stone shores of the Underdark reappearing on either side of them.
Lynch collapsed onto the burning volcanic rock, his robe immediately starting to give off a faint green smoke.
Seeing this, Deluo quickly grabbed Nimo’s collar with one hand and the belt of the mage’s robe with the other, hurling them both three meters onto the shore.
Lynch rolled several times on the hard stone ground, still unconscious, his limbs sprawling powerlessly, lying face down in the gravel on the ground.
Deluo bolted up the shore in an arrow-like stride, his greatsword already too hot to hold from being baked on the volcanic rock. The warrior and the dwarf quickly ran to the mage’s side, supporting the now unconscious Lynch.
The mage’s face was flushed red, yet his lips were pale and cracked, his body temperature almost matching that of the volcanic rock. Nimo fished out a water bottle from his backpack, quickly pouring water into the mage’s mouth, and Deluo snatched it halfway, pouring it over Lynch’s head directly.
The mage’s eyelids twitched a few times, a low moan escaping from his lips.
But he still didn’t wake up.
"What’s going on?" Nimo asked Deluo puzzledly.
"He must have used up the only remaining heat protection Spell on both of us, that fool..."
